People need to remember that Queen Mary had just lived through the disgrace, dishonor and absolute humiliation Edward Viii had just put his family and country through and to someone who put duty above almost everything else-- naturally she would be determined to teach her grandchildren the importance of duty and honor! We also forget that these women often only saw their children for an hour or less once a day at the most and really never knew their children at all.

Also she endured some scandal within her own family the Tecks were impoverished as well they left a country without paying their bills, and later they paid them, and she was in engaged to the Duke of Clearance who later because suspect in white chappel murders akai jack the ripper. He was sent to an asylum while still engaged to her , however they still had her marry a heir to the throne regardless

After the Romanov family was toppled from power, The Elite must have reconsidered looking so austentatious. Now they only bring out the heavy bling at important ceremonies.

The only piece in the collection for sale, after Princess Margaret death, that I personally would have coveted, was the small magnificent Fabergé clock, that Princess Margaret had on her bedside table, that her grandmother Queen Mary, had bequeathed to Princess Margret in her will.

Although they were not featured in this video, and in spite of my not being wild for either diamonds or pearls, I love the earrings Princess Margaret is seen wearing at 8:15. My favourite item was that lavish traveling case. I am always fascinated by many and miscelaneous articles that can be packed in a relatively small wooden box. I am glad the Princess enjoyed it so much. My second favourite item was the diamond and sapphire broach. I can imagine why Princess margaret wasn't enamoured with it: to her eyes it would have seemed out of fashion. But at 100 years, it is now a lovely antique.

Queen Mary had a very particular area of interest - jewellery, Fabergé eggs, tiaras, etc. She would visit the homes of her friends, browse through their collections and then show enormous interest in pieces which really caught her attention. Some items which her hosts thought had been given on loan to the Queen were simply never returned. Other items were coveted so obviously that they were given, albeit begrudgingly. She was after all, Her Majesty, Queen Mary. Many a host lost precious items to her, simply because they hadn’t the courage to say ‘no’ to the King’s wife. No doubt that as time went by, her friends displayed less popular items, keeping what remained of their prized possessions firmly out of sight.

@@TerriKnight-x3s Assuming you're referring to Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, she had what could be commonly referred to as champagne tastes on a beer budget. She had very expensive taste but very little income. I wasn't aware that she was a "collector" like her daughter.

People are often shocked that Such Personal Items were allowed to go to Auction, in order to pay off death duties ( taxes ) Margaret herself was quite pragmatic and did all she could in her lifetime to ...Gift certain Items...allowing them to be Tax Free...Her exquisite home in the Caribbean for example was transferred to her Son to avoid Tax duty... He Sold this before she died...and it could look as if Margaret would be upset to see him do this. But again; she was pragmatic and I'm sure excepted his reasoning... Margaret had some stunning Tiaras and Jewels which its believed were returned to The Crown...BUT have never been worn by anyone else as yet...That is quite a common theme especially while The Queen...was alive. The two Children it's known did keep some very special pieces...for their own use. BUT as neither of them take part in State Dinners and the Like...Their Need to wear Major Pieces...such as Tiaras are few... and there is still the "Snowdon" Tiara in the Family! I was a little surprised HM The Queen didn't step in and Bid for some very Personnel Pieces...Many Items not mentioned here...Perhaps she did ? The Fabergé Clock...For Example...May now be on the Late Queens dressing table.

Both King George V and Queen Mary found Margaret spoiled and naughty as a child and even when older, Queen Mary found Elizabeth far more congenial. It's been said that Margaret didn't feel close to Queen Mary either.

There were Lovely Jewels given to Princess Mary The Princess Royal at the Time of her Marriage BUT Remember she Married the Earl of Harewood. a very ennobled and rich family. with Family Jewels. Queen Mary believed... It was up to the Man's family to "Provide Jewels" for their Wives. Likewise Princess Marina of Kent...left very few of her Jewels to Her daughter...Princess Alexandra, believing her Husband should provide... Alas. Sir Angus Ogilvy while wealthy was not so wealthy and in no position to Lavish Jewels on her. BUT Alexandra did alright.

Something by watching this You may not know... Queen Mary had 4 sons, 3 lived to maturity & one daughter. Prince Edward aside who became the Duke of Windsor after his abdication, who it is believed "Took a LOT of Jewels with him into exile..." Queen Mary... "Set up"...Her other three Son's and her Daughter The Princess Royal with exquisite sets of Jewels... Check out for example the Jewels she gave to her daughter in laws...Including The Late Queen Mother... So vast was her collection of Jewels. The Duchess of Gloucester and the rather Grand... Duchess of Kent. who's Husband...The Late Duke of Kent died in a plane just at the end of the War with Germany. The Kent collection has over the years been much depleted from the need to sell off items...BUT the Gloucester Collection is pretty much " In Tact" and has some seriously Fine Pieces. I'd love to see at least Two of the Gloucester Tiaras ..."Returned" to the Royal Collection...It Includes The Cartier " Indian " Tiara that belonged to the late Princes Marie Louise of Anhalt ...and is Magnificent !( you can google it) It's a "pipe dream" of mine... as I don't see that happening in reality. BUT the Tiaras are exquisite. The Gloucester's will face Taxes as all Royals, other than the Monarch Face...such is life.

May I offer a correction: Queen Mary and King George V had five sons and one daughter. Edward(Edward 8th), Albert(George VI), Henry, George and John. Unfortunately, John is often overlooked because he died as a young teen. Prior to that he had been kept out of sight at Wood Farm due to epilepsy and possible autism.

Knowing Queen Mary’s love of jewelry no matter who actually owned it, I doubt Queen Mary’s friend “bequeathed”. It was more likely she bought it most likely not at value… love that woman ❤

Queen Mary, She was A True Blue Royal Soul, Her granddaughter’s were both such different human beings, they were both Beautiful little girls, I have tremendous admiration for both of these incredible women, no one could ever doubt her loyalty to her Queen and Country, they both gave so much to their Country, I pray the two sisters rest well in heaven either their loved ones, so much has gone on we have all lived through such hard times, I still say prays for the Royal Family.

Princess Margaret was an extraordinarily beautiful woman throughout her life. And although I know Estate taxes in The UK especially for the nobility can be extraordinarily high which in turn necessitates the auctioning off of the personal effects of the deceased. I do wish a few of the pieces shown in the video could've been kept and passed down to her grandchildren, especially the pearl necklaces since they are part if theyr family history. I know sone of her jewelry was kept and will be passed down to her granddaughter, Margarita Armstrong-Jones, her father Is David Viscount Snowden. The Enamel Fabergé clock was absolutely beautiful

The Princess Margaret's Estate was subject to some rather heavy succession duties. The family had to sell several items to defray the levies. The Sovereign, HM Queen Elizabeth II was not subject to any Succession Duties. The family kept many pieces; distributing them amongst several individuals.

Not all of Princess Margaret’s jewelry was sold at auction. I believe David and Sarah were surprised at how much money the auction raised to pay death duties. The jewels and personal mementoes raised far more than anticipated.

@@erinobrien8793 But pieces of jewelry were special Princess Margaret when she married Armstrong Jones she became the founder of her family line the Snowdon line and all that jewelry that brought to her marriage with her should never have been sold from the tiara she wore on her wedding day to allthe other pieces of jewelry she brought with her Even her ex-husband was opposed to what his and Margaret s children selling of this stuff unbelievable the royals are rich enough the queen should have helped her nephew and niece with money to avoid them selling these valuable pieces of jewelry a pity

@@ileanaacacostaacosta1813 I believe that when the Armstrong-Jones children planned the sale/auction the auction house gave them an estimated value of each piece. David and Sarah probably had a target amount they needed to pay for the death duties and selected accordingly. I too was surprised by certain pieces that were auctioned. The Poltimore Tiara was a significant loss for the family in the eyes of many of the public. Especially Princess Margaret’s five strand necklace and girandole earrings. However, if the royal family felt strongly about any item they could have purchased it privately during the auction. We may never know if a piece was returned to the royal vaults until years from now.

@@mikeburnham9359 They are all rich enough to pay for it Margaret's son was married to a immensely rich heiress he has his own money too and his sister married to another rich person and even her sister the queen all should have contributed to pay that debt the gorgeous poltrimore tiara the necklace and the saphire and diamond broach or bracelet all were special pieces of jewelry the tiara Margaret wore it on her wedding day the necklace and the saphire and diamond bracelet were Margaret s grandmother s presents all of these jewelry pieces should have stayed in the family

Saying that Mary paid more attention Elizabeth because she will be Queen is wrong. Nobody knew Elizabeth will be heir until her uncle abdicated when she was 10. The close relationship with Elizabeth started before this.

I have to agree that I am very disappointed that her children sold some of the most important and iconic pieces of jewelry that had so much history to them and they were also items that were very precious to their mother you would think that especially the jewelry that she wore on her wedding day would have been something that they should have kept especially the necklace that has such a long and interesting history, I hope that the reason why they sold it was because they couldn't afford the inheritance taxes and not for more money I think out of all of the items they should have done everything that they could to keep the necklace that was given to her by queen Mary because she received it from someone who she was obviously close friends with and she gave such a meaningful gift to her granddaughter it's just sad that we will probably never see any of these pieces again at least most likely not in the original version just more items that are lost to history but you can tell that they gave princess Margaret alot of happiness in a life that she was never completely happy

I doubt highly they sold all of her pieces and I don't know if they have to pay inheritance tax or if its only the children of the monarch who are exempt from inheritance tax but they may have had no choice but to sell some of the princesses collection.

Margaret may have been jealous but she showed love and loyalty to Elizabeth her whole life. Margaret never spoke an ill word about her sister and she carried out huge numbers of public engagements, charity work and royal tours for Elizabeth. The two were always close and one of the rare times we saw Elizabeth shed tears in public was when Margaret died. There is no comparison with Harry.

Elizabeth was never 'very plain'. She had a beautiful English complexion, lovely curly hair and blue eyes. She was taller and had a better figure than Margaret too.
