The Church of Christ is Catholic which means Universal because it is the Will of GOD that all people (both Jews & Gentiles) shall be saved and possessed eternal life through the holy Christian life of penance and good works. (2Cor.7:10 Rom.2:6-7)

We are to judge, but not by appearances. We are to flee from sin, mark and avoid false teachers and avoid false prophets. Yes we are to use judgment every day

This passage is all about the salvific role of the Catholic Church.. Of inviting and praying for all to be converted.. Baptised with water or through a martyrdom and to be incorporated into the Catholic Church.. Outside which absolutely no one can be saved.. Wonder why the speaker made no mention of this.. The Catholic Church is the earthy Pillar of all Truth.. God wils that all be baptised and converted to the Catholic Faith.. Incorporated into the Catholic Church..one church.. The Mystical Body of Christ..

My question is if God already knows who is going to be saved and who's damned from before time began, how does this figure? What is the point of desiring something if the outcome is a known factor? Seems like we are all in some strange masquerade of sorts. This subject is so confusing and seemingly irreconcilable for me that I fear I will be leaving the faith soon. God seems anything but caring to me. And I have REALLY tried to reason this issue. I can't see freewill having any value if the outcome of our lives was known in advance. We have no recourse to affect our salvation at all. It's already known. Scary and sad.

People are not predestined because that’s in conflict with God who is love. If God knew Adam and Eve would sin, that would mean He is responsible for the wickedness in this world, and He is not! (1 John 4:8) God’s ability to foreknow certain events is SELECTIVE and used with DISCRETION so it doesn’t interfere with the free will which he has endowed to his human creation.

The Catholic Church has always taught this as a mystery. Augustine and Aquinas dive deep into it. We have 100% free will, yet at the same time, God knows everything. It is predestination, just not double-predestination like calvinists came up with. In double-predestination, yes God is evil.

Therefore, it is the proper Christian spirituality that we dare hope all be saved, for it is what God desires as well, even though everyone is given free will to make life decisions that would lead to different eschatological outcomes.

The thing is God is also Just and he will reward everyone according to their deeds. For that to happen it's inevitable that the evil people of the world will be punished not only because it's what they deserve but because it's justice towards the oppressed and the poor, otherwise there's no perfect justice.

False. "Hope" recognizes the possibility that it will happen. If you say, "I hope for this outcome," you are saying that this outcome is both possible and desirable and is not excluded by what I already know. The Church has condemned the idea that, for example, Satan, will go to Heaven at the end. He is a person. He is damned. The church has condemned the idea that all will be saved - not just the idea that it is certain that all will be saved- but it has ruled out the possibility of the actual event. Saying, "Oh, I would that no one would go to Hell," is not to say, "I hope that no one goes to Hell," still much less is it, "I confidently hope no one goes to Hell." This is postwar optimism playing clearly dubious semantic games with the church's and the Bible's pronouncements on Hell. It has no basis in the Scriptures or elsewhere.

Dr. Pitre, you lost me at the end with your comment about the tension between universalism and exclusivity. So let me ask the following questions: If God is infinite in every manner including power, how can he have desires since having desires means lacking something that you want? Also, if God wills the salvation of all then why do we not believe in Universalism? If some are damned, does that not frustrate God's will which implies a lack of power which is impossible since God is all powerful?

Yes, He does. But that saving has nothing to do with the Catholic Church. What saves a person is him coming to the realization that he is a sinner and he wants Jesus to save his soul. That can happen anywhere. A church, home, prison, or even in a bar. When you confess your sins and repent then you are saved.

@@bcalvert321 Sorry, there are soooo many different kinds of protestants, its never easy to understand which hill you are on. Clearly not the once saved always saved one. Good. In a way you're right. It is only through Christ that the Catholic Church was given the keys, power to bind and loose, forgive or retain sins and to teach. Without Christ its just like any other protestant denomination. The thing is Jesus specifically institutes a new "temple priesthood" based off of Moses and Aarons. Most of the time when he was speaking, he wasn't speaking to the general public, he was speaking and teaching that institution what to do and how to teach. So the Catholic Church is there for your own good. Its there to share the truth and remains the oldest institution on earth. We are his bride groom, in one body and to attack Christ bride, well, it means he doesn't know you. Read the entire Bible from the 1st century Jewish perspective, with the complete old testament as a key to understanding what Christ was actually doing and saying. And if you get stuck, see what the early Christians thought about the passage you are having trouble with. They were Catholic and had access to the Apostles or their students, the original scriptures (not copys) and were part of that culture and spoke the languages, so they didnt have to translate.

Poor God is trying so hard to save everyone, but is no match for the power of human will. Poor Jesus is trying so hard to shepherd His people, but just keeps losing them to the world, the flesh, and the Devil. It's amazing how much of salvation depends on us.

@@heartofalegend There's an itty bitty problem. The Bible teaches that good works are necessary: Romans 2:13 King James Version 13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. And the Bible doesn't contradict itself.

Again, Romans 2:6 says: Who will render to every man according to his deeds:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: Thus, God only grants eternal life, salvation, to those who do good in His eyes.
