This comment was three years ago so I apologize for the random question out of nowhere, but I would like to ask you because I would really like to hear your perspective!! My high school is performing Hunchback of Notre Dame in the spring, but all of our women in the program are white. Is it okay to have a white woman portray Esmerelda? A lot of the women (including myself) are really conflicted with this, as we’re not sure what to do!!! I’m trying to ask everyone I can haha!! What do you think??

​@@leahrosecrossan hey! dont worry about the late response. I appreciate that you want to respect the culture and i want to tell you that it is absolutely ok if a white woman plays esmeralda. In fact most of us are caucasian. The dark hair and the tan that some people have is still a leftover in our genes from our ancestors from India/Pakistan (But that is around 500 years ago). I hope that helps with your decision and i wish a lot of fun while making the hunchback of notre dame. I hope it will be a success!

I am not Romani myself, but I am well-aware of the treatment of Romani both historically and to this day and it's not hard to see the deep emotional connection to this song. I am, however, a trans person who is finally free and happy after spending years in hiding and denial and the oppression and hate spread against us is an absolute injustice. Because at the end of the day, we are all children of God, whatever God means to you. This scene in the movie brought me to tears every time I saw it as a child, and still does to this day, and the whole messages just hits differently.

This song reminds me how much I have struggled of being faithful especially since 1. I am gay and we live in a country where the culture is heteronormative (which means being straight is the considered normal gender). 2. Ever since my 11th grade I became Suicidal because of many problems. Honestly, I was very faithful when I was younger, even joining our school (because I attended a Christian school) and parochial choir as I loved singing songs for God. But as I turned an 11th grader, I seem to have lost those happy feelings of serving in our church, probably because of a person I have complex feelings about who was also our guitarist at the time. I wish I could find a way back to God because I'm struggling that path. I don't know why I shared this but maybe because this song really struck an arrow to my heart, thrusted deeper, since I listened to your version. Thank you for being such an inspiration, Malinda. This song connects to me so much. I'll admit I sang it in my first semester of voice lessons in college 😅 I have had learning disabilities my whole life, and it has been a huge struggle. Because of my disabilities I feel like I have to fight my own brain a lot of the time to process things and remember them. But music has always connected with me, and it's what has given me passion and support (as well as my wonderful family and friends). I even work as a music director at my church now! It's really incredible. I don't really need to explain much else about how I connect with this song so deeply. Having anything in your life affect you so much can make you feel like an outcast. But we're all children of God. We're all worth being loved. Lovely cover, and what a great tone! I absolutely adore your videos (the Google translate ones make me literally cry laughing) But I think you captured this song's meaning wonderfully.
