It's all mostly explained in the second game. But in the first, in the final battle Kratos has with Ares (who the game is named after), he manages to open Pandora's Box, and in doing so he corrupted all the Gods with all the evil things in the world (Hermes - Arrogance, Poseidon - Anger, Hades - Hate etc.). In the second game he becomes the God of War, but Zeus takes away his Godhood due to Fear corrupting him. And that's basically what the game is about, Kratos getting revenge for his Godhood.
