Shad, I wanted to comment this here, because I don't believe there's a way of contacting you privately, nor do I want to invade your privacy in the first place. I recently listened to your novel, shadow of the conqueror. I'm gonna be honest, it's one of my favorite fantasy novels ever, period. I love the well developed world, it's intriguing, original, and believable. I love the characters, the concept of Dalas himself as a character particularly intrigues me. I don't know if he really developed at the story, normally id pay attention to that because I enjoy studying my novels, but I did not with this one. It's sucks you in, and I regularly found myself wanting to listen to it when I was unable to. I didn't have the time to think about if Dalan develops as a character, because I was too invested in the story. Not even to mention the amazing narration, it really makes the experience better. I'm very excited for a sequel, if there will be one, and I'll definitely be buying it regardless of if I have the money to spare or not. I would go homeless for a sequel to this story. And I would kill to know the concept.

I totally agree, the magical theory in it drew me in the most. The character growth and concept drew me in further but the world and story kept me there. The only criticism I can think of is Dalan already is a know it all, though it was explained by his old age and long lived life before falling off the edge. Even if you count it as a character that already has knowledge they don't have to earn in the story it's still very well made and overall amazing

I do think magic is a large part of what makes the blades functional, specifically with the chains. The chains in the games seem to perform much more like magic elastic bands with Kratos having precise control over their length and tension at any given moment.

Well from the way they were using it they made it awkward on themselves If they went for the stance kratos has in the game were he swings the chaos blades next to him rather then over the head you could get some decent propeller esc moves out of the two blades And I'm pretty sure the only reason a large amount of the moves in the game work is due to magic and kratos having alot of practice with the wepons

Thoughts from watching: 1) As with any unusual weapon that you've never wielded before, training will make huge differences. One day spent with a weapon can't compare to one year (or even one month of dedicated use, training, and testing). Considering what you were able to accomplish in one day of testing and experimenting, regular use and testing and training would make a big difference after a considerable amount of time. 2) It does seem using just one of these would be far more effective than dual-wielding. The chain attached to the sword, and having both hands to manage blade and chain, proved very effective in your "sparring" tests. That looks like a VERY fun weapon to wield. I wouldn't want to dual-wield these (except if I wanted to be the ultimate edgelord), as in, if I was handed both and was told I could only wield them if I committed to dual-wielding, I'd just ditch 'em. But give me just a single chaos blade with chain? I'd be perfectly happy with that as a main weapon.

I feel a lot of the chain issues are explained by the magic in the universe they were created. They would always have the perfect tension as kratos is massively strong and also they retract into the flesh of kratos as he uses them. Plus who knows how long kratos has used those babies by the time ragnarok came around
@BillcosbyKNOWS

I found myself thinking on multiple occasions that while dual wielding the blades, you can alleviate the stress of throwing your melee weapons by only using one to throw at a time, thus keeping them from tangling and keeping one in case your opponent closes the distance on you. Perhaps throwing your main hand while keeping your offhand?

story time : I made actual metal blades of chaos in my teen years. My father had a friend who had a forge and so during my teen years as a cosplay/skit. we made the blades of chaos out of actual proper metal so I could do a pre niche cosplay or just have them and play around. they were heavy as fuck but were absolutely beautiful. the amount of shelves and stuff we knocked over tryna do tricks n stuff and bruises n cuts we accidently gave ourselves from the metal. when I did a pretty budget cosplay for a convention that happens annually in my city me and my close friends who went as captain America and over watch Brigitte with actual metal shields that we also made with our parents, we went for some fun and show off our work. unknowing to us the convention changed the rules that year that ANY metal items and such would be confiscated. yet they were only confiscated after you already entered, paid for ticket, waited in line etc etc, because they were "too dangerous" or assuming we would intentionally k1ll someone, even tho the convention sold actual sharp hunting bowie knives and our mere cosplay toys were pitiful in comparison. a lot of people lost their cosplay/cool metal trinkets and weapons that day and they weren't given back even after to us as to the police they were considered "weapons" and "needed to be taken off the street". the convention failed and it went under new management fortunately the following years after flopping harder then Kanye's career. still miss those big mean metal chaos mf's Edit : my comment about kanyes carreer was a simple joke, stop arguing politics and taking things seriously to heart. I think you guys missed a historical weapon that is much more similar to the chaos blades and it happens to be one of my favorites, the chain whip! It’s a Shaolin martial arts weapon that uses specialty links of chain from a handle to a metal dart on the end. The chain whip was believed to be primarily used by police forces in ancient China because of it’s practicality in restraining your opponent with joint manipulation techniques. Another one would be poi coming from New Zealand, it’s basically started out as a rock attached to a long rope. I can’t remember if it saw combat or was primarily used in training, but in the modern context it’s become a form of artistic object manipulation. Many of the techniques used for poi and the chain whip would make using the ranged attacks with the chaos blades much more practical. (Same could be said for the Chinese rope dart, and multi section staffs)

@@shadystuff673 Like I said in the latter part of the comment, the techniques used can make the chaos blades practical. The biggest difference I think between Kratos' animations and Tyranth's testing of the spinning maneuvers sadly does come down to Kratos being superhuman. Kratos needs very little wind up (if any) to get the full effect of a strike with the "ranged" aspects of the weapon, whereas Tyranth needed at least two full rotations to (seemingly) feel comfortable making a strike with the weapon, to get up enough momentum as it were. Especially in the cases where Tyranth was trying to use both of the chaos blades at full reach, having to build up momentum with rotations just ended up tangling the two chains. Whereas with Kratos' animations, he just lets them fly because he has enough strength to overcome their inertia without "winding them up" first. It really is a situation where (I think) the developers of the game went, "What would the ramifications of his super strength be?" and found something cool that Kratos could do that could seem realistic, given suspension of disbelief, that wouldn't really work in real life because no human is that strong. I would love to see a bodybuilder or strongman take a stab at these (pun intended) to see if maybe they could get a bit more out of them ... D'ya think we could get Jorge from the slingshot channel to make a quick video about it? XD

It seemed to me, that the chains were burnt into Kratos' underarms, as in, they seemed to be somewhat immovable on his Arms, so maybe, if you were to re-test it, you could try to fix them on gauntlets. The chains also seemed to extend their length, as it seemed like Kratos is able to throw them further than what their length would suggest when he holds them in his hands. So, maybe you could look into applying something to make them retractable? Otherwise, using dartrope techniques could be useful in handling them (in a Reallife scenario, even though that's not how Kratos uses them).

This is great! I started learning knife dart or Kyoketsu not to long ago! The chain with 1 you need both hands to control. Ive seen in movies and games they use 2 but think the reality is like its not as practical. Pretty sure thats why the Chaos Blades change their length based on need with magic. Which would allow for 2 being used no problem. One thing to note that I noticed. It looked like you had the chains attached to the sides of the grips instead of the back of the pommel. That definitely affects the aerodynamics and think thats why they were getting caught more on you and tangled. Great video! Always wondered if theyd work in the real world haha.

Tyrant was getting more and more proficient with releasing the blades each time he did it. A lot of these seem like it's all about comfort and training with these, in ADDITION to proper material and weight.
@SoftisNelaris
@SoftisNelaris Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I see the Blades of Chaos being somewhat gimmicky, but within the context of God of War they actually make sense. *Number 1* is the strength factor. By the time Kratos gets these, he's already been annointed by Ares and thus has plain old superhuman strength. *Number 2* is the training factor that you mentioned. Kratos is the kind of bloodthirsty murder machine that values skill, and by extension practice. He'd be plenty willing to practice for months and years in order to perfect his technique. The end result is an incredibly gimmicky but actually very useful pair of weapons that are designed for a superhuman warrior. They're *not* meant for regular men. But in the hands of someone like Kratos they're not only incredibly powerful swords, the chains give him a unique advantage in how he can use them for long-distance attacks and sweeps.
@shiyotso1
@shiyotso1 Жыл бұрын
@@SoftisNelaris I see it as an extension of a blade whip or meteor hammer, some techniques might not work the way Kratos does it offhand, but a Kung fu practitioner trained in chained weaponry would be able to make better use of them.

Also adding more weight would make the blade spin less against wind resistance. I’d be really curious to see someone design functional chaos blades that apply physics to see what they look like in real life. The main issue I see with them is at range your attacks are very predictable because you’re attacks rely a lot on the spin of the chain so it’s very choreographed. So at range you run the risk of an enemy just grabbing the weapon or the chain and taking it from you. Personally I’d probably trade the blade for a heavy spiked weight or a morning star that can produce momentum much faster and the chain itself would then serve as a weapon because there is just so much force behind it.

@SoftisNelaris
@SoftisNelaris Жыл бұрын
It partially comes down to his practice with them; the Shadiversity crew only tried them out for a few hours, Kratos got to practice for months and years. The other half is the superstrength factor. Kratos can immediately get the heavy metal blades and chains to maximum power instantly despite their weight. These two factors make it much easier to get that kind of performance out of what are, frankly, a very offense-oriented pair of weapons.

A more functional version of fantasy weapons on chains I can think of would be Medusa's chained dagger from the Fate series But some issues with those would be that they're more like stakes than daggers, the chains aren't actually connected to anything so they're fly around if not held (not to mention they're quite long), and the only real way to get a fatal strike with them is to throw it
@bahamutfateburn6091
@bahamutfateburn6091 Жыл бұрын
As much as Medusa is Best Girl imo, I must say that her daggers are possibly the single most ineffective chain weapon I could possibly think of, for the simple fact that only someone with her physical ability would ever be able to throw them and have them fly in a straight line. Those things are another example of what I like to call "Superhuman Physics," where the dynamics of regular physics don't really apply. In this case, we'd end up in another situation like the BoC where a human couldn't possibly get conventional physics to work with them. However, Medusa does use the chains and the nails in a very conventional way, and we see it time and time again: grapples. She's really damn good at using those chains to manipulate her opponent, and that's definitely what you'd wanna do, especially if you're working with what are basically a pair of railroad spikes attached to handles. Using the chains in tandem with your speed to trip up and bind your opponent enough so that you could get a solid opening to drive the point home. In fact, I think we see her do that more often than we see her actually throw the daggers.

Loving the video! If i can comepletely nerd out for a minute, I think in universe, the blades are somewhat sentient, because Kratos states that they came back after he tried to get rid of them (i think he even said he tried to get rid of them multiple times, but i cant properly remember). So it's possible that the blades themselves choose to assist Kratos by landing in his hands perfectly, always keeping the edge alignment perfect, and never allowing the chain to get tangled or in the way.

Having some specialized gaunlets or bracers would definitely be a huge help in handling these. One thing with wind up/rotation on chains is that you can redirect and alter the direction really quickly (see rope darts). One other thing that could really help/alter effectiveness is having a handle near the base of the chain and adding some fibre woven through to give it more a whip like maneuverability.

One of the things that could help these blades are sharper edges, because in the game once you get past the sharp edge it is met by a ledge which in tandom with the sharp edge could help with throwing. Because the sharp edge would cut through the wind like the wing of a plane, while the sudden ledge would stabilize it so the sharp edge is going for the enemy.

i think having the chain to catch the enemie weapon is pretty cool to have as a sword. the main way i would make them better is only using one at a time to focus more on that chain+sword combo could be cool. of course another way to make them better would be to have the chains be auto retractable and be able to adjust the length at will like a grappling hook, but that is many a bit to complex to do.

I would be interested how it would change the handling if you could wrap the chains arround your forearm While wearing some kind of braces that offer no friction as possible. Like a plastic pipe. I can imagine throwing the sword forward could be more stable when the chain can unroll itself like a harpune.

Love the videos. Interesting detail about the chaos blades; this video showed that the mass/heft of the blades is way more important than the sharpness.... plus.... it would have to be pretty bulky to not snap... as well as the amount of banging on the ground that would ruin the edge... Anyone notice how thick the chaos blades are in the games? P.S; I really like chaos blades..but while a Spartan superhuman warrior could probably be devastating with them... the average Joe is literally better off with a crowbar

Possibly a rotor (bearing system). Reference a very old movie called Rad (1985ish). The handle bars have hand breaks, which link to a chord. Before the rotor system, you could not do certain tricks without the brake chords becoming entangled. The rotor system eliminated this. I still have my SkyWay bike in a shed and know the rotor system works. It may at least help the chains from crossing as much. It would not keep the orientation of the main blade angle as the main striking point, but..... I think the blades are sharp on both sides. Great demonstration. There are some demonstrations of old whip chains (not sure how many different sections there are).... but seems like there used to be some used in old kung fu shows. I have some I ordered out of a catalog a long time ago in a trunk in the same shed as my old bike. Just my two-cents to address some of the engineering issues you asked about.

The new presenters for Shadiversity did a great job! Speculation: if the chain was shorter (max. half an armlenght) would it be better to control? A long chain seems great for blocking attacks but not for swinging the blade. Also doesn't Kratos also wear some sort of bracers with the chains wrapped around them? It might actually help with avoiding wrist injury. In the story the blades are seared into his arms but gameplay wise I have seen the blade's chains wrapped around a bracer of sorts.

It seems like with enough time spent to get familiar with them that there could be a lot of potential for a chained blade as a singular weapon (no dual welding). It seems like an interesting way to open yourself up to more unconventional things (like throwing your weapon, or spinning it around yourself) and the defensive techniques that you guys touched on looked like they could have a lot of potential too. Being able to add extra range to your sword (even if it's not as consistently fatal as something specifically designed for range) could definitely come in handy, and at least having the chain to give you some kind of control over your weapon if someone takes it from you may be useful too (though it could also end up making you worse off). The biggest thing that seemed like it would make a difference to me would be trying to maintain good tension in the chain at all times; not allowing the chain to extend too long and wasting energy, or allowing the slack to get tangled up or hit you. I think the chain definitely adds to the skill level requirement, because there's a lot to keep track of, but it seems like if you can learn to control the chain more then you can definitely do a lot of interesting and probably very useful things with something like this.
