I love the combat system in the new gow games but man this "last of us" style camera just ruins the experience. It makes the combat look so stiff.

17:43 Ig the reason why Kratos died there was because he was underestimating Thor and wasn't taking him seriously. He didn't expect him to be strong enough to be kill him in one hit. In his codex entry, Kratos remarks that Thor is physically the strongest God he has ever fought. In their second battle at Ragnarok, however, Kratos tanks the same hammer strike to the face in an interactive QTE (this time from an enraged Thor intending to kill him) and just flinches. So, ig, that proves it beyond doubt that Kratos gets stronger and more durable depending on how serious he is.
@GamingTankАй бұрын
Nah mate, it's just poor writing on the creators part. For a version of Kratos who's supposedly "wise" and who teaches Atreus to always be on guard, he knows what kind of threat Thor was. The makers contradict themselves on every step of the way. A lot of the creators of the original games are no longer with the team and most of the new ones didn't know what they were doing. Hell, Cory Barlog himself didn't even work as the director on this one.
@rtxmeatlug3149Ай бұрын
@@GamingTank I mean, Kratos did admit in the codex that Thor's blows were the strongest he has ever felt, implying that he was physically the strongest God Kratos had ever faced. Maybe that's how he was able to kill Kratos? He was just that strong? Eric Williams is director of this game and Cory is the producer this time. Isn't Eric one of the OG developers too?
@GamingTankАй бұрын
@@rtxmeatlug3149 Writing something in a codex is just the lazy way out here because we have been shown something else in the series and then told something else now. Also, Eric was not in the main directorial position ever before. And it's not just him, I am talking about the lineup of all creators as a whole.

@@rtxmeatlug3149 also Freya herself states the magic of the greek gods was stronger than these Norse ones. Furthermore, Zeus VS Thor is not even close when you look at the evidence and there's plenty of videos on that. The inconsistent writing is on full display in this game.

Best thing about Ragnarok's combat is how it balances runics by nerfing them which causes the skill ceiling to be defined by the weapon special functions (Triangle attacks) rather than just breaking the game with runics. Also, New game+ is almost unplayable due to the horrible pacing and unskippable non-gameplay sections.
@GamingTankАй бұрын
Runics didn't need to be nerfed they were already balanced on anything above the easy difficulty in the last game, besides you can still spam them in this one too. And the triangle attacks are literally just two button presses so I don't think the skill ceiling has anything to do with it lol. It's just poor creative decisions, same goes with the new game plus. Also I love how you call them "non-gameplay" sections 😂🤝.
@rofibhoi9788Ай бұрын
@@GamingTank In the first game, you can definitely spam some of the runics like the ice laser one that alone can take out half a combat encounter. Your cooldown also goes down to low numbers REAL quick in 2018. In Ragnarok, the blade triangle attack is the most powerful one and managing it is a bit more skillful. You can spin it fast by mashing it. But then you can also dodge and keep the spin going in the middle of a perfect dodge due to a dodge offset function. This pairs real well with the perfect dodge realm shift function.

I agree with your points on the downgraded sound, impact, and runic attacks and the no bare handed combat options. The bare handed combat in GOW4 felt great and was more satisfying than the axe or chaos blades sometimes. Also the cluttered and terrible design with the shops compared to GOW4. I also agree on your points on the inconsistencies with the story. This game is supposed to be the "war to end all wars" and the end of an entire mythology yet 90% of the game is spent doing side quests in the main quests. Its supposed to be something akin to infinity war or something but feels more like thor 2 or captain america 1. This game felt like a complete 180 compared to GOW4 and isn't as good as evryone hypes it up to be. They in fact did lose the plot way too many times in this game

The fact that we spend more time in Ironwood compared to the actual final battle is just baffling to me.

3:50 There's a story reason for that, if you paid attention. Fimbulwinter makes all magic less potent.
@GamingTankАй бұрын
@@rtxmeatlug3149 I knew this comment was coming. 1. That doesn't explain the changes to the sound design and weightiness. 2. Nothing changes even when the story ends and fimbulwinter and ragnarok are over. 3. Upgrading weapons also doesn't do anything in this regard.
@rtxmeatlug3149Ай бұрын
@@GamingTank 1. Uhh, the magic is less potent, so that's why it's less flashy. That includes sound. 2. Developers just forgor 💀. 3. Upgrading weapons won't negate the effects of Fimbulwinter. A lot of the criticisms you have for Ragnarok are also present in 2018, which you called a masterpiece in your review. So, has your assessment changed for the predecessor?
@GamingTankАй бұрын
@@rtxmeatlug3149 the game feel wasn't an issue there. I gave 'em a pass on the mid-air combat since it was their first go with the new formula. The climbing sucked there too but it wasn't as prevalent as it is here. And the other problems like the difficulty system, I mentioned them in that video as well. But despite all of that, I do still feel that God of War 4 is a Masterpiece because of the story and other good things I talk about in that video. It's not perfect either though. I think the only game in this series that is a 10/10 for me is, of course, God of War 2 🐐.
@rtxmeatlug3149Ай бұрын
@@GamingTank Yeah, GoW 2 is definitely the best game in the franchise. The reason why I think they couldn't have avoided those walkie talkie or climbing sections is because the game is a cinematic af, single-shot beast much bigger in scale and scope than its predecessor. Those sections work as a loading screen, I suppose. If they went for platforming and traversal mechanics like the Greek saga games, it probably wouldn't have been possible to have a cinematic one-shot gameplay. Also, I didn't mind most (not all) of the walkie talkie and climbing sections in this game because of the great writing just like its predecessor. There are more walkie talkie and climbing sections in this game as it's not only bigger in scale and scope, but also longer, than its predecessor, and has waayyyy more lore to cover. I won't rate a game 10/10 unless it's a masterpiece.
@GamingTankАй бұрын
@@rtxmeatlug3149 The traversal could have definitely been done while still keeping the one shot cinematography by pulling the camera back like God of War 4 did in some sections. But yeah, at the end of the day it's mostly just different opinions & preferences. We chilling 🥶.
