About Video Game Sophistry:
Video Game Sophistry is an opportunity to celebrate the creators and the artistry found in Video Games. I believe that Games are the most effective medium from experiencing another world, and another way to live. Expect to see a series of videos showcasing the narratives hidden in every game, interviews with game developers, along with our bench mark weekly podcast, Dialogue Wheel.
Andy Borkowski started this program nearly 10 years ago and, in that time, it has changed from a simple KZbin show, to a radio show, a tv show and now once again a KZbin destination. Welcome to VGS.

I love that before he was revealed in Ragnarok, everyone thought Odin was gonna be like Zeus. A buff, manly dude with cool armour. But no, he's actually a much more lankly elderly lookin' dude. And you know? I dig it.

That’s actually just the entirety of Norse mythology, Jormungumder is tossed to the sea, allowing him to grow to a monstrous size, and Fenrir (Who is in need of an appearance in this new GoW) only grows to hate the Gods when they tie and bound him up. Whether Odin is just fulfilling his destiny with grace, or is trying to avoid it, is unclear :/

Buttoxicated Ian well Kratos caused the end of the world in Greece. He had Atreus and then together are causing the end of the world in the Nordic realms. There’s a quote in the sky in god of war 2 that says “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” And Zeus also tells that to Kratos in another God of War. So, if every god is a god of something, then I’m pretty sure Kratos is the god of the end of the world and so he basically is Ragnarok.

@@brandenapexo604 I'm not so sure. If they are trying to portray the myths accurately, like they have when describing Thor and Odin; Loki will end up imprisoned until Ragnarok. I think Tyr is Kratos. You can see that he's matured and let go of his anger considerably in the latest game. If so, and he is the one sent to the past, his character may evolve further into the Tyr the Aesir and Jotnar know in their time. It would also explain why he, Tyr, has an interest in safeguarding the Jotnar.

Odin is prophesied to die at the hands of Fenrir, so he captures and cages Fenrir - which in turn results in Fenrir developing a grudge against Odin. Baldr dies only when the denizens of Asgard are testing his newfound immortality, which Frigg bestowed upon him after learning he was fated to die. The prophecy that describes Loki as the traitor is what drives Asgard's distrust of Loki, which - combined with Fenrirs captivity, ultimately drives Loki to betray them. It's likely that if Odin had never learned of the prophecy, Ragnarok (as we know) it would not happen. Odin is irony incarnate.

There are a lot of parallels between Zeus and Odin in this universe. The most obvious being the FEAR. Zeus was overwhelmed by Fear from Pandora's box. This lead to him becoming a tyrant, attacking Kratos and lead to the destruction of Olympus. Meanwhile, Odin has had the prophecy of Ragnarok hanging over him for centuries. He has become obsessed with avoiding it and is now willing to do anything to have even the slightest change of changing his fate and that of Asgard. I can kind of sympathise with Odin. If you knew how you were supposed to die and who was meant to kill you. You would probably go crazy thinking about it.

It is said that Brok and Sindri, to atone for Mollnir and Thors rampage across the realms and all the people he slaughtered with it, tried to make a new weapon on par with Mollnir. But as their patheon was declining as less and less people believed in them, they had to wait to get enough power to forge it. Together, like with Mollnir. They decided it to be a Hammer again so that everyone who gazes upon it may remember their folly and their shame and they decided to make it the total opposite of Mollnir. Mollnir destroyed everything in its path and so this new weapon they willed, shall repair everything it touched, even flesh. Without adornments and fancy, a HAMMER like made from purest gold, to be wielded not by Aesir or Vaneir but the humans they saw so much potential in. But their powers were not enough, in the most crucial moment Brok and Sindri were gone like fog in the wind, leaving the HAMMER without a name. ... But the hands of fate can't be denied and as time passed it fell towards Midgard. It was found by a man who used it for many a year, till it was time to pass on the hammer and the profession to his son, Fix-It-Felix, Jr.

Probably not, but I would enjoy if they went in that direction. A good way to reinforce this would be if the Jotunns had some skeletons in their closet as well, which would at least partially justify the Aesir's antipathy towards them. Odin is not only evil but also insecure and jealous as hell, considering his marriage to Freya was a pact for peace. He not only did use her and learn her ways and magic and in the process, know her weaknesses too, but he also took her warrior spirit by ripping out her wings. And then, he locked her out in Midgard only. Doing all that to the Vanir goddess, the leader of the Valkyries itself and the Queen of the 9 realms, Odin really is a very vicious King. On top of that, he's the Allfather. And that's only what he's done to his wife. His torture of Mimir and him sending for Faye, and later Kratos and Atreus too. Deal with that kinda power, damn!

According to the lore book, Odin has just been spying on Kratos and Atreus since their return from Jotunheim, instead of immediately sending Thor to kill them. And we know from the lost pages that Odin already knew about Kratos and Atreus, even if he didn't know Kratos was in fact the Ghost of Sparta and not a giant. And Mimir tells us that Ragnarok is happening centuries earlier than anyone predicted. "Even if Odin can't prevent Ragnarok, he hopes to learn enough details to influence the outcome." "A battle fought on his timetable is one he better stands to win." Given what we already know about him, did Odin deliberately send Baldur to his death, knowing it would start Ragnarok early?

@@AngelMartinez-hv6fj You make a very interesting point. After all, Kratos is carrying the Blades of Chaos, not the Blades of Exile. Maybe it's just because its more poetic that they're the same blades that killed his first family, or maybe it's Santa Monica's idea of a clue. Odin would control everything if he could, but Chaos disrupts order. As much as I like the idea of Odin being this sadistic schemer, there's always the possibility that he's really just pissing his pants in Asgard right now. Go ahead, flip that coin.

Atreus' responds by saying:" Not a lot of good things, we heard you were Evil" Odin answers:"Good and Evil are subjective." "One would say that I am an evil tyrant, but if you would look at the bigger picture, I can be said to be a Hero, trying to save his own and the other Realm's future from extinction". Kratos, annoyed by Odin's attempt to whitewash himself, he threatens him: "Stop trying to deceive us, we know what you truly want." Kratos' rejection of the idea of fate is something that he has every reason to believe, having killed the Sisters of Fate himself and changed his destiny...but I recall that it was _Gaia_ who gave him that idea, and encouraged him to always refuse to give in during his second big journey. It actually feels a bit touching that, despite betraying Kratos in the end, Gaia taught Kratos something important, that he took to heart, and is now teaching his son. As awful as Kratos himself and the others he encountered in his original adventures were, when you think about, Kratos still learned some things from both his experiences and the advice of others, and now is applying and teaching those things. It's even more moving considering most of them were his _family_

God I love this game. The writers are fucking geniuses or got a god damn good ounce of coke to do this. The AEsir Gods as the real evil and the Jotun as the misunderstood good while Loki is the son of a Spartan God and a Jotun. What a fucking gorgeous picture they painted.

In a weird way I think Odin is such a good manipulator that he actuals fools the player. I never really thought of Odin as intimidating but when you think about he is pretty impressive. I mean he fought Kratos, Atreus, and Freya simultaneously.

"For Thor, it's that no object of power makes you what you are...and if what you are is the biggest butchering bastard in the nine realms, nobody can take that from you." Pfffffffttttt XD 😆😂🤣 Dark, yet funny! Mimir always cracks me up! Another important lesson for Thor is to keep a better eye on his things, but the big bastard is probably too stupid to ever consider this. XD

Honestly Mimir is such a cool way to introduce the player to Odin and Thor. He hilariously makes them out to be a pair of dumb assholes but also creates a sense of dread surrounding the both of them. Thor might be one of the most powerful and feared entities in the nine realms but he's also a "sweaty bawbag".

fun fact: Mimir is Odins uncle who was a peace prisoner with the vanir after the Aesir and Vanir war, but the Vanir cut of his head and sent it to Odin who didn't want his wisdom to die and revived his head and placed it next to him in Valhall.

I think in the irl lore when baldur was born freya made everything in existence promise to never harm him, except mistletoe. Freya believed mistletoe was too young to swear an oath so that's how that came about and why he's vulnerable to mistletoe.

The Ampharos Freak Yeah but he did do some messed some things. He threw out the the Midgard Serpent and I don’t see a source that showed that the serpent did anything to deserve that. A lot of gods in just any Mythology does some questionable things.
