After watching this, I feel like she planned it all out for the benefit of the mortals and right at the end instead of the plan going south her new found greed got the better of her, giving us the evil athena we saw at the end So it's likely that it's a mix of all those theories

Athena is the true villain of God of war, with the new trilogy, I think she will have a similar plan to that in the original series come ragnarok. She could also be manipulating Odin with her "wisdom" and knowledge about kratos

Exactly, I knew from the jump Athena was a part of everything. I feel the day Kratos tried to stop Ares from taking his brother is when she knew he would be the perfect person. So she orchestrated everything, I feel she even had a part to do with Kratos accidentally killing his wife and child, then she stops Kratos from killing Zues which allows her to gain all that power after dying. I feel Kratos sacrificing himself was where her plans were foiled.

I think Ares knew before Athena that Kratos was the marked warrior. My theory is Ares used Kratos because he hoped to replace the Olympians and just underestimated Kratos' power. That cutscene with Ares and Athena says it all, Ares was at first going to kill Kratos but changed his mind after marking him with the scar. He must have seen the truth and just took Deimos to fool Olympus.

In my opinion, Ares is too arrogant and short tempered for that. Remember how he challenges Zeus with Pandora's box and when Kratos broke the chain and then went down to open it, Ares literally waited for Kratos to open up the box.

The “They” she speaks of might have been Deimos and Thanatos. Deimos’ death is what ultimately started his campaign against the gods.

I don't think Athena planned to kill Zeus prior to God of War 3. Rather, I think she planned to kill Ares, knowing about his machinations to overthrow Zeus and become king of Olympus. I think that was Athena's master plan: to have a justified way to kill Ares and put a stop to his path of destruction, in a way the circumvented Zeus' ruling that the gods were not to wage war on one another at any time. And I, like many people, always assumed that Athena's "they" referred to Kratos' brother, long before his identity as Deimos was revealed in Ghost of Sparta. Remember that he has been on fans' minds ever since the first game.

In regards to the first part i agree with you, that was originally the plan, but as other directors came in the series, they brought with them different ideas as to were.the series should go, thats why we have contradictory moments in the series, And i.dont think she was referring to deimos, since she implies that if kratos dies the other person/people willl also die, so it couldn't have been deimos. I hadn't considered this, but this video kind of brought it out and it ruins my thoughts that Athena has been planning this all along. I think that if Athena was planning everything, including dying to reach higher existence from the beginning than her sacrifice to save Zeus wouldn't have been a selfless act, it would have been done for a selfish reason and then she would never have ascended to the higher existence. Perhaps she was planning on Kratos killing Ares. Ares and Athena had a developed a rivalry over Zeus showing favoritism to Athena, perhaps out of fear that Ares would one day kill him and take over as Zeus had done to Kronos (the cycle). Now she couldn't fight Ares herself because it was forbidden for the Gods to fight each other, so it would have to be a mortal and the person with the best chance of killing Ares was someone trained by Ares, which means Kratos. "He must live." But at that point she was still loyal to Olympus so she could have meant mortals "They must..." as well. I don't know though, but you've given me something to think about so I will watch the video again later, think about it and if I can find a way around the plot hole I will come back with a better theory than the one I've written out here.

I know there's a lot of moving pieces to this problem but you seem to get, however I didnt get the second part of your thought, are you say that Athena was playing it safe? like it seemed like kratos was going to be the one killing Ares but she wasnt 100 percent sure? so she included the mortals too? if thats the case I think she would have already thought of kratos as a good candidate, he had the motivation for killing ares (vengeance) and was the most powerful demigod around. I've got two thoughts right now about who she meant for "They must." One is that she is still loyal to Olympus and they need mortals. Or she could be referring to Deimos, Kratos' twin brother who is still alive as well but being held captive to Thanatos (I almost wrote Thanos there). He hates Kratos, but I would think that the next person that he would hate is Ares the God who kidnapped and imprisoned him with Thanatos in the first place. Still working on some thoughts, but I just thought I would throw that out there as a possibility too.

Not in the timeline though. The physical game came out later but in the story the events that happened in game before God of War 2. You're probably right in that they weren't thinking that far ahead, but it is a possibility. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I was suggesting that if Kratos died that Deimos would also die. I wasn't making that suggestion. And at the time of Athena saying that "They must live," they (the Gods) could have still been under the impression that Deimos was still the "marked warrior that would destroy Olympus." If he was capable of destroying Olympus, then it would stand to reason he would be able to destroy Ares. I had thought that maybe Athena was the one that sent Kratos to find Deimos because at the end of that game she was the one that said now that your final ties have been severed from the mortal world you ready to finally become a God. But now I'm reminded of the after credits scene where the old Grave Digger/Zeus buried Kratos' mother next to Deimos he looks into the camera and says that "Now only one remains." Suggesting that Zeus had sent Kratos on this quest in the hopes that either Kratos or Deimos would kill the other or that Thanatos would kill one or the other or both. Eliminating the threat that cycle would continue of sons killing fathers. But that too is a contradiction as Hercules is still alive so that means that two sons still remained, after Deimos' death, Kratos and Hercules. And Hercules had some resentment toward Zeus as he viewed Zeus as favoring Kratos. In GOW 3 "You were always Zeus' favorite."

This isn't about this thread but I just got done watching the channel AllAgesofGeek TV react to Chains of Olympus. She played through God of War 2018 having never played the old games so now she is going back and reacting all the old games in storyline order starting with God of War Ascension to God of War 3. She just got done with the Chains of Olympus game and I noticed something that I had forgotten about during the boss fight with Persephone. The thing I noticed was how closely Persephone's design (warrior in armor and has wings) as well as the areas they fought in and the game play is to the Valkyrie fights. I may not be the first person to bring this up, but it never struck me before. And the similarities aren't just in game but the mythology behind the characters are similar as well especially with Freya. I mean they both look after the spirits/souls of the dead and they both entered into marriages that they didn't want. It's probably just a coincidence I mean the same designers could have worked both games or they just had that carry over because it worked for what they wanted to do with the Valkyries, but what if it wasn't? What if during the design process or making up the concept art for the Valkyries someone at the studio brought up the fact that it was similar to Persephone's design and they decided to keep that design for a later story element. Another way to tie all the games' mythologies together for a big payoff at the end of the franchise? Kind of like they did with Atreus in 2018 God of War. I remember hearing Cory Balrog say that Atreus was never meant to be Loki originally, but then the writers pitched him the idea late into that process and he loved it. Making for one of the biggest reveals in gaming history. I think I've got a theory formulating now. I will have to come back to this later.

In most circumstances, actions speak louder than words, especially if we are using our known knowledge of how one would be ascended. Thoughts could very well make no difference as long as the action SEEMS noble.

Well.. Nothing in the game suggests Athena got effected by the evil Greed, also, how do you know if she didn't figure out how to protect herself and break through the control of the evil? What if she knew all along, but was just acting in front of Kratos? She appeared genuinely surprised when she realized why the gods changed strangely, but she said nothing about herself. She actually didn't fall prey to the evils, so she sacrificed herself willingly knowing full well the outcome. After all, she could summon the greatest weapon in the world, she knows about the powers existing in the world, more than anyone, so she certainly know how they work. Still, she couldn't predict everything no matter how smart or wise she can be lol

Here's my interpretation: when chains of Olympus was done, about 2008, the writing team was getting started on God of War 3. One of the earliest drafts, according to David Jaffe, was to have Kratos kill Zeus at the very start of the game, and the Norse and Egyptian gods invade Greece since its chief god was defeated, followed by Kratos' Norse and Egyptian counterparts trying to get revenge on their gods. At one point, Kratos learns that to kill a god effectively is to get people to stop believing in them since they were like corrupted politicians, this could be why Athena said that they, the mortals, must live so the gods can live on too. And at the end of the story, with the Greek, Norse, and Egyptian pantheons (polytheism) defeated, Kratos and his counterparts follow a star in the Eastern sky to where Jesus was born in Bethlehem as the three wise men, aka, the start of Christianity (monotheism).

Maybe bc of her higher plain of existence she's able to somewhat manipulate the flow of time or the narrative itself. This would be a "chicken came before the egg" scenario, rather than her knowing all along. However... she definitely knew.

My theory is that Athena became something like an artificial intelligence: she wants to save humanity no matter the cost, even if it means cleansing the world in chaos. I don't think she ever had the evil Greed in her because if Fear took over Zeus in God of War 2, then Greed would have taken over Athena at the same time and cause her to sacrifice her wisdom (rather than her own life) for more immediate reward... unless she knew at the time she would be in a higher existence, in which case she would have calculated that into her plan. It may simply be the case that she's taking "the good of all mankind" to its logical extreme.

That thing about how she become something higher and got that aspect in GOW3 got destroy to me, when Zeus has a aspect that look like the same when his soul or spirit or whatever it was came out of his body right after Kratos put the Olimpo's blade out. I think she was always corrupted like her brother Ares to take the throne but she doesn't act because she knew what Zeus guard.... The Chaos inside him. But when she see Kratos leaving the plagues out everytime he killed a God she just saw the opportunity to take Zeus's place as a ruler of the Greek World, and she must still there using a other warrior or the humans that survived that. She still got some power to transform the blades of Athena in the blades of exiles.... Something powerful in more powerful (I really believes that all the blades are the same blades, just more powerful, because the design and how she transformed them is very grafic)

I personally think athena protected kratos simply because he's her brother. Everything we get before gow3 is an athena who cares deeply about her family more than anything. She's compassionate. And if we look at mythology (even the gow interpretations) she may clash woth the others but never really wish harm upon others. The theory i personally had based on her being corrupted by evil of greed is that the evils didn't affected the gods immediately, they slowly corrupted them. We don't know how long kratos was the god of war but based on everyone knowing him and worshipping him, it's possible a long time has passed. Also based on Hercules's comments, if Zeus was instantly corrupted by fear, why would he spread kratos' name across greece? Sounds counterproductive. In the case of Athena, it's possible that her wisdom tempered the evil for a time and so it corrupted her slower than the other gods. It would make sense as wisdom tends to be inherently good and meant to know the right thing to do, which in this case is not to give into greed. But once she died greed finally managed to take over. And it's possible the creator's interpretation was still correct, she ascended to a higher plane of existence due to her genuine sacrifice but in doing so, allowed greed to take over. Hence the 180 she does in gow3. It would actually be a wonderful tragedy worthy of a greek story but if we are honest: the most likely explanation was that before gow4 the writers didn't really think this through. 🤣🤣But for now this is my interpretation.

it has been confirmed by the devs time and time again that was the the most noble and good god, she was selfless, and after dying she reaches higher existence which made corrupt and she came back wanting to rule the world in gow3. and she isn't really even 'evil' in gow3 either. People still believe the theory. Also more or less she saves kratos for stratergic purposes and other times she's been noted to have affection in a romantic sense for Kratos. more or less it is clear if you read the books. How her brain works.

maybe she didn't think her plan would fall apart last minute you know. all this time, she had been assisting Kratos, hell I even thought for a moment he WOULD give her the power of hope you know. So maybe she herself "hoped" at first that this could happen since she put hope in the box herself as she explains I put a power to counteract the evils myself. Since she's been a god, she knows the process can take different ways but the outcome/result would be her achievement of the goal. Or at least she did all that with the "hope" it would. Honestly i kinda disagree. It's not only Athena that think that she's the only one who worth of the Olympus throne or thinking that Olympus Gods are just shits at their job. Let me explain Throughout the series, it's been shown over and over again that some Gods did attempt to overthrown Zeus or basically Olympus. Ares cooperate with the Furies in GoW:Ascension to overthrown Zeus by trying to create a perfect warrior. They failed, so they looked at Kratos. Persephone in GoW: Chain of Olympus also attempt for Olympus destruction by using Atlas. Ares (again) in GoW 1 not only destroyed Arhens but also threatens Zeus using the exact same Pandora Box. Hell, GoW: Ghost of Sparta is basically one of many Zeus's attempt to weed out potential threat to Olympus, which is odd to how scared Zeus is considering how powerful he is originally. So overall, this theory that suggest Athena's betrayal from the start shouldn't be surprising. Considering how much of an asshole these Gods are.

Maybe Athena is referring to Kratos and Deimos? Part of her plan would hinge on Kratos disagreeing with the gods. So by letting Deimos survive long enough for Kratos to witness his death at the hands of a god, specifically Thanatos, this would cause Kratos to despise the gods of Olympus thus ensuring the devide between them. Ultimately leading to the events of God of War 2 & 3. This also accounts for Athena's plan failing, due to her being unable to realize Kratos would hate her as well and would rather die than hand control of the world and humanity over to another god.

I have a slightly different theory about why Athena said "they must". I don't believe that Athena was scheming against Olympus from the beginning and that she in fact handled in the best interest of the Olympians prior to Kratos opening Pandora's box. Her telling Ares to spare Kratos might have been part of this. We know that Zeus feared the Marked Warrior but instead of having him killed, he had him imprisoned in Death's Domain... Why? Why did he had to remain alive? Because there is possibly more to the Marked Warrior prophecy that they initially let on. The prophecy speaks of ONE Marked Warrior, not two and I think here in lies the secret. As long as there were two possible candidates to take up the position, the prophecy can't come true, as there can't be a question about it. Zeus knew this but kept it a secret to all and only ordered his children to capture Deimos and bring him to Thanatos. This way he was sure that Deimos wouldn't die, preventing anyone from taking up the mantle of Marked Warrior and if other died, turning Deimos into the Marked Warrior, he would stored safely away already. In both scenarios, Zeus believed himself to on top of things, especially since he believed himself to be the only one who was aware of the full prophecy. But the truth is, Ares and Athena knew the truth. While Ares tried at first to assure Deimos would come the Marked Warrior by killing Kratos and likely would have used some deceit to either break Deimos out at the right time or simply try and trick both Zeus and Thanatos and give them another boy, Athena saw through this deception and stopped him. Athena knew that in order to stave off the Destruction of Olympus, Kratos had to live. That's why she said: "He'll live. They Must" As long as both lived, the prophecy could be prevented from coming true. I do however think that once Pandora's Box was opened, Athena started to scheme against Olympus and her selfless sacrifice was a risk she had to take in order to survive the planned deicide. In her last words, before dying, she told Kratos everything he needed to know to make sure that he wouldn't just kill Zeus but also the other Olympians. As for Ares, I think after sparing Kratos, he came to the realization that he would indeed be a better candidate to be turned into the Marked Warrior. Kratos could be trained properly and if he intervenned on the right moment, the Spartan would be his loyal soldier. This is also the reason why the last trial of his Blood Trials was the slaughter of kin. If he proved himself fully able to kill his own blood, he would have no problem going to the Domain of Death and kill Deimos. But things didn't went as well as Ares had hoped.

I think Athena was evil from the start. Here's my evidence and please let me know what you think. 1: Athena is known as a shapeshifter almost like everyone other diety in Greece, for example: she turned into an old lady and challenged a weaver to a contest and when she lost, she turned the victor into a spider, so how do we know that she wasn't the 'oracle' that told Zeus about the son that takes him out as he did with Cronos. 2: I think when she put 'hope' into the box her manipulative sense came out and was too dominant as well given in all the games, she was the only one that talked to Kratos if you don't add the little chats from the others here and there. Also, it's quite possible if the other deities knew that Kratos wanted to get rid of his memories, they would, but yet it was Athena that said 'Hell no' to that request without consulting the other deities, though I have a feeling if Hercules asked the same request she would've said 'yes'. 3: (please bear with me I'm not that good at greek myths) I think there was a greek myth about Athena manipulating Zeus so she can be in charge whenever Zeus becomes a playboy gigolo so it's possible the reason why Kratos did all the killing, wiping out all the gods, and putting the world into chaos was so that she would be in charge permanently. If you put all that into consideration the real villain wasn't Ares, Zeus, to any other deity, Athena is the TRUE villain of the God of War series. Any thoughts?

She's never a victim blamer. she avenged Cassandra. she helped Coroneis she helped Auge and she helped Nyctimene. the modern notion that "Medusa was forcefully taken" is false. Medusa had a consenting affair with Poseidon. When you read the actual Latin text where that comes from, the writer never said it was a forced act. He also said Medusa deserved that punishment. and i already mentioned how Athena helps the victims. There was some english translators who mistranslate the original latin work and made it 'forceful' I have read the original Latin work so i know what i am talking about. I can also provide the source if you are interested in knowing about it. and how Athena has helped the victims, ALWAYS. So Athena punishes Medusa because she did that out of her own will, and you can't just have sex in the temple of a chaste goddess!!

Schools taught us if I remember correctly that Medusa bragged about her beauty and was turned into a gorgan. I don't remember if the book's author was discredited, but it wasn't until I was older that I learned the actual myth, regardless of which version. Aside from that, still not a fan of Athena's myth when she lost the weaving contest. But that's just me. I'm sure there are different versions of that story too. Was there a Greek story, outside of Heracles, where it was consistent and didn't have that many changes? I want to know because I've read 4 versions of the Troy War in the past.

there is 2 scenerios that may make sense. 1. athen could have ment kratos family allow me to explain as best i can, athena if she planned it from the start would have known that krots hatred growing for the gods would only be intensified having had to watch his mother and brother deal with the results of his mothers curse and his brothers torment and both thier deaths yes kratos killed his mother but only because of what zeus placed on her and turned her into the monster she became and diemos with the torment he dealt with for all those years and being killed by thanatos his hatred was getting to the stage that he could have been manipulated and directed at the gods athena sacrificed herself willingly and it made kratos even more enraged because she was the only god that stood by him and actually wanted to help him in his eyes and when she came into the higher existance form she manipulated him to kill the gods even more then he already wanted to.s 2.remember she went with ares to find this 'marked warrior' but she knew it wasnt diemos somehow and she convinced ares to spare him because she needed him remember she was the goddess of wisdom so its not to far of a stretch to believe she thought of the 'the obvious one is not always the right 1' and she was the only 1 to guide kratos on the tasks consistantly the others gave him some guidence but athena was the only constant 1 so by they will i belive she may have ment there are others that he had to meet and kill others to make the gods want kratos gone more and clearly helios knew what she ment or he would have questioned her on it so maybe she ment something that would benefit olympus but she took a gamble and manipulated kratos to the stage where he didnt care what the gods expected of him she clearl had a feeling that kratos had hope inside of him and got him to get pandora to the flame who sacrificed herself with made kratos even more mad at the gods because he needed the power but didnt know he already had it and her sacrifice was not needed and was in vein effectively everything she did for kratos was to make him so angry at the gods that his rage blinded him and he killed them out of said rage getting them out of the way but she took a big gamble on it so she had to be very careful on how to played her hand. either 1 of these reasons or it was a typo in the script and they never fixed it.

What if Athen sent Artemis out to hunt down other Gods and Goddess from different lands? That could explain why she has been gone for so long... maybe Athen had her sent out after she helped Kratos in the first game and she has no idea that Kratos destroyed everything in Greece. Good revenge plot. Good way for Athen to become the only Goddess in the world having Artemis the Goddess of the Hunt to hunt down all other Gods and Goddess.

Just finished watching the video and after carefully thinking about it, I don't think the three scenarios you said are the answer. I think you might have over thought this one and the "They must" could be a way of saying that the humans must live. He'll live live, they must to me sounds like an Olympian god saying what they think of Kratos being a human. After all to Athena, Kratos could be the people's champ. The best ambassador of the humans. Perhaps if you can state when Athena learned that he was Zeus son I would be more inclined to believe one of the three.

Well kratos sarcaficed himself to give hope to the People after Greece decended into chaos rather then give it to Athenia it seemed Athenia was doing the same thing too when she sarcaficed herself to save Zeus and was hoping to gain the power from kratos after he destroyed the gods to rule as one goddess. Not only that,but also Magni & Modi. This is why he was so surprised when kratos killed him the first time as if it was the first time all over again. I believe Athena knows about Thor.

Athena knew everything from the beginning... She made all this plan to rule the world and the humans using Kratos and the prophecies for her purposes. If not, Kratos brother will be dead instead of being kidnapped from Ades and Athena herself. The only mistakes she did was to think that Kratos will always follow her and he will never kill himself in end of gow3.. or maybe this was part or the plan too? maybe the real plan of Athena is to rule all the possible worlds and civilizations including Norse, Egyptians and etc.

I believe that Kratos killed himself because of the fact that he knew Athena was there with knowledge of him & Demos as children when Aries was going to slay him. She did not help Demos, or help Kratos against Zeus,so after gaining the entire world he realized that he was alone. Okay okay let me drop some knowledge ,good Athena the goddess of war in GOW ghost of Sparta had saved kratos so that he may not be captured by ares and taken to the realm of death scince she saw that ares would soon turn evil , k now we move in to GOW chains , at this point athena still protects kratos k now she could be refereeing to kratos’ mortal half and his godly half as they can be classified as two different people , as we saw kratos the spartan general and kratos the ghost of Sparta which is why she is referring to THEY but still refers to 1 kratos NOW into GOW 1 athenas city is being destroyed yada yada yada , we save it OPEN BOX all the gods become infected with the evils NOW we already move on to ghost of Sparta kratos in his gut of rage searches for his brother Deimos and Deimos dies big whoop , now at the end of ghost of Sparta Athena says “you have let go of what had made you mortal your are ready to be a god”and kratos refuses also as a side note Athena now refers to him as 1 person as his mortal half is basically non existent and zues AKA the grave digger refers to him as “Death the destroyer of worlds” as 1 singular person , FOLLOWING UP with GOW 2 you can clearly see that Athena is pissed at kratos cause he says “he owes her nothing” and then the greed sets in athena then jumps infrint if the blade for zues knowing that it will give her the power needed to become a god of the higher plane , this is because instead of kratos killing her , she draws the POWER from the blade , that would explain why the blade is so much weaker , next in GOW 3 we demolish athenas plan done
