They DID, in a manner of speaking. Ludwig, at the time a "child prodigy" pianist (ten years old, a few years before he started composing in earnest) performed some Mozart for ol' Wolfie, and the Maestro told him, "You'll go far in this business, kid." By the time Ludwig was an adult and was ready to learn more about composition from Mozart, WAM had died, before that could happen.

austin teutsch No. JS Bach and Mozart OR Claudio Monteverdi (creator/originator of Italian Opera) and Jean Baptiste Lully, Creator of French ballet opera music for Louis XIV. Each specialised in creating a secular singing music representative of a unique national feeling and language, even tho both originally worked in the same language, Italian. But with +/-100 years between them they couldn’t immediately bounce off each other like the Beatles and BBoys. Before Monteverdi, there was very little secular singing music that spoke-told a story, Monteverdi is considered a father of opera. Before Lilly, there were court musicians and composers but not one who could do it all PLUS write dance music, ballet music, fit for a dancing king. Both JS Bach and Mozart were FAMOUS for their voicings and improvisations, while McCartney and Wilson were/are compositional craftsmen as well as skilled in the disciplines of counterpoint, voicing and (sort of) improvisations.

Once upon a time these 2 guys were 2 of the most creative and innovative and relevant musicians in the world. They pointed music in the directions that it went and they inspired millions to sing and play guitar and start bands and write songs but it would never be like this again. 1963-1968 was the best of the best. Total nonsense comment. Early black artists and Buddy Holly/ The Everlys ignited The Beatles' career and harmony groups like The Four Freshmen inspired The Beach Boys. The Beatles, when supremely confident in their music formula, were ears-open to The Byrds and Dylan, both of whom had impact on their music. Dylan especially, right to the very end. It's everywhere evident in George's playing, John's lyrics. (Back In the USSR was just a one-off tongue in cheek nod to The Beach Boys who were so into their " Beach Boy groove" that it's impossible to say for certain if Beatle Paul had any influence whatsoever on the jewel of a creative mind belonging to Brian Wilson.) Credit Paul though for bringing the element of "Britishness" (a measured reserve and distance) to many great melodies, lyrics and vocals, a critical element without which there could not have been a Beatles.

These are two geniuses who had tremendous respect for each other. Paul always said that Pet Sound was the greatest album ever made. However, it was Elvis Presley that had the greatest impact on John and Paul with Little Richard coming in right there with Elvis. Now the “Nerk Twins” did say that Elvis’s influence on them declined after he went into the Army. Brian Wilson was a giant in their eyes but I don’t think he was of greater stature than Elvis in the beginning. But I do agree that once you’re getting into 1965 and forward it was always about Brian and The Beach Boys. I read somewhere that after Sgt Pepper, Brian especially had a hard time because his mates didn’t want to evolve the sound of the BB. The Beatles were lucky in that all 4 of them were always pushing forward and looking for opportunities to innovate.

@@memphisflashfan1 McCartney is a genius memphisflash? really? be specific, give me an example of ANY song that McCartney did that you'd label as genius. I think McCartney is a wonderful, prolific song writer who penned one of THE classic melodies of the 1960's, 'Yesterday' and several others that I won't bore you with naming them. But genius? really? when his songwriting partner was writing stuff like 'I Am The Walrus' (whatever the hell that means) and 'Across The Universe'......he was writing such forgettable classics 'Why Don't We Do It In The Road?' ha! really Paul? 'Why Don't YOU Do it in The Road?' I'll watch from the bleachers, or 'Honey Pie' which is a flat-out vaudeville tune that could have been written in the 1920's when my grandmother was a virgin.....ha! I like a lot of McCartney's work, I really do. I think he's gifted melodically BUT! a lot of his songs have the 'smell or flavor' of someone else's tune. He seems to listen to other people work and 'rework it', you know change the chords here or the time signature there, or start with the chorus instead of the bridge yatta, yatta. Basically reworking the tune to give it a new appearance. Sort of a song facelift. Not all memphis but several. And if Pauly was a genius (as you screamed from the mountain tops) 'PAUL'S A GENIUS, PAUL'S A GENIUS) he wouldn't need to look over his shoulder to see what some other song writer's had done before him

Never saw this clip before, but it's so good to see (and hear) Sir Paul get to perform his all-time favorit Beach Boys song with Brian. These guys have so much respect and appreciation for each other that each band attempted to outdo each other back in the day, driving each other to record some of the best music ever. I agree with Paul, I can't help but get teary-eyed whenever I hear this song. A lot of BB songs can do that to you. RIP Carl and Dennis Wilson and John Lennon.

No song has ever touched his heart as deeply as their 1966 creation, ‘God Only Knows’, which appeared on Pet Sounds, and McCartney instantly fell in love with the song. It’s a song which has touched millions, but few are more attached to ‘God Only Knows’ than Paul McCartney. He told BBC Radio 1 in 2007: “‘God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down.” He told Ronnie Wood: “I got to sing it with Brian once when we did a benefit [show] together. I was okay at the actual performance, I held it together. But at the rehearsal, at the soundcheck, I lost it, because it’s very emotional, this song, I find it… ‘Oh my god, I’m singing with Brian,’ it just got me, I couldn’t. So all it is, it’s little vibrations reaching your music, it’s only little vibrations, little words, and little things. There is this powerful effect, you know.” The most powerful lyric in the song is: "I may not always love you, But long as there are stars above you, You never need to doubt it, I'll make you so sure about it" People always selectively quote the first line but he’s actually saying that the only time he wouldn’t still love this girl he’s writing about is after the world has ended. Yes, I can understand why Paul fell in love with this song in 1966 and how it can reduce him to tears to this day. Very sweet.
