Yeah, my philosophy professor in college was a very fervent, leftist (maybe even socialist) atheist. He did not shy away from arguing about it. BUT, he constantly got into debates with a conservative Christian -- not yelling at him, but actually asking him what his opinions were and why he thought the way he did. Pretty sure that dude managed to get A's on all his assignments. Philosophy professors definitely are more atheist-leaning (at least in my experiences), but they don't use that as ammo against their own students. This movie, in short, is stupid.

I'm an atheist and I'd still be pissed if a professor introduced his course like that. I'd refuse to hand in that assignment, not because of religious concerns but simply because it's bad philosophy. Luckily, having studied philosophy myself, I can affirm that few philosophy professors are actually like that. Those few professors who come closest to proselytising are religious.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:4-6) We have to think about where we will spend eternity, because there is nothing more real than all that I am telling you. Once we die and see that the Gospel is true, it will be too late! It's not just "someone else's beliefs" or "another religion"... it is the truth. What makes me know that? Faith and what I can see around me. No one but God could have created our world, and that’s just what the Bible says. Now, if some of the Bible is true, wouldn't it all be true, since it is God's Word? Would He ever lie to us? No. Therefore, when He says how to be saved and that Jesus is the only way, He means it. **He told us all this for our own good. He could've just let us die... we did deserve it as sinners... but He loves us so much, and He is not willing that any should die. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

If you do watch this, Please Note - this has happened in a university level philosophy class, Nowhere Ever. Rich Christian (don't let that irony pass you by) should be ashamed of himself for expecting his audience to swallow such nonsense, but then again, that audience has to take it on faith, because the vast majority of fundamentalist christians have never seen the inside of a university classroom - and that's the really sad thing. Nope, god's not dead - something has to exist first to die - but this movie is a stingking corpse, right out of (and back into) the box.

When someone says "something has to exist to die." You obviously know nothing of philosophy so don't lecture people through comments like a professor. The statement "God is dead" isn't saying that God literally died. It's saying that people are becoming more secular and moving away from believing in God which in a sense is true. God definitely existed throughout history but, in a way, more atheists exist today so someone could argue God is dead. However I'll counter that statement because more people believe in the concept of a God so I'll say God is not dead.

David Nisbet If you've spoken to many atheists who are 'exactly' like the Professor in this movie, then you've never spoken to any atheists at all. Kevin Sorbo's character is a straw-man who doesn't resemble anyone in real life. His character literally believes in a god--and he even blames god for whatever hardships he faced, which makes him a theist by definition. You've spoken to many _theists_. An atheist cannot "hate" something which doesn't exist.

And people wonder why no atheist can take this movie seriously? This movie is terribly biased and pathetic. Trying to claim that atheist's are actually people who hate god and that it's okay to shove your religion down someone's throat when he's literally about to die. *Shoving your religion down a helpless atheist's throat when he's literally about to die.* How can people not see how terribly insane that is? Christian's can do shit like this but then call people disrespectful when they make fun of their religion.

Lol, I think the message is to stand Christians to stand up to when Christ or God is being judged. Now the difference between atheists making fun of Christians to Christians making fun atheists in this movie is this: we're not trying to. That's not the message. It seem like it, but it's not. So.. I believe in one god. With that said, I would like to give my thoughts on this film. I found this to have a great amount of anti-atheist rhetoric. Atheism may be the absence of religion, but Atheists still have the same morals and guidelines of which all humans should abide to, a code of conduct. This code is affirmed in all religions, but, and in my opinion, should be self-evident for all people, regardless of belief or disbelief. To say that, "Without God everything is permissible," is ridiculous. If one's religion, whatever it may be, helps that individual seek solace in times of distress, then that should be reason enough to believe. However, if an argument is made that there is no god, then that argument is also reliable. There is no validity when it comes to belief: hence, belief. I will realistically approach an argument from either side with an understanding that viewpoints, whether for or against god, warrant the same level of respect for the individual. It is easy to judge and feel emotion, but harder to listen and hold that emotion down, allowing rational thought and calm nerves to prevail. There are striking similarities in how to live life people with different religions share, and those similarities are also found in those without religion. This 'anti-another' propaganda should not be taken seriously; but rather, be appreciated as a piece of film art. Respect those who differ in opinion from your own. Those are the ones strengthening your resolve.

It's like watching a monster movie from the 1960s, only instead of a comically terrible costume and special effects, the monster is an authority figure written in an over-the-top melodramatic script. It so ludicrously caricatures the opposing view point and celebrates its own moral flaws that it crosses over into being hilarious.

Everyone has a journey, it’s their job to choose whether to follow Jesus and love/give love, or to deny him and to deny his father. I come to you as a Christian who believes that Jesus loves all of us, and that even though there’s so much pain in the world we just have to except that he has a plan for our lives and we just have to follow it, even if we don’t know what that plan is. #God‘sNotDead

(Isaiah 53:4-6) (2 Peter 3:9) also tells us basically that God’s will for us is to accept Him, so that we can have eternal life with Him. He gives us many multiple numerous chances to accept Jesus, but we only get one life on Earth. We will not continue to be sent back to Earth to have chances to accept Him. That is what is taught throughout the whole Bible. I put my trust in what God said, because it makes sense… not in what mankind can come up with, to avoid having to accept Jesus.

Otherwise completely on point, The best thing about that movie was the song, which is stuck in my head AGAIN. The film has been panned by critics, currently holding a score of 16 out of 100 on Metacritic indicating "Overwhelming Dislike", based on 5 critics,[8] and a rating of 17% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 18 reviews as of May 2014.[9] Writing for The A.V. Club, Todd VanDerWerff gave the film a D-, saying "Even by the rather lax standards of the Christian film industry, God's Not Dead is a disaster. It's an uninspired amble past a variety of Christian-email-forward bogeymen that feels far too long at just 113 minutes".[10] Reviewer Scott Foundas of Variety wrote "...even grading on a generous curve, this strident melodrama about the insidious efforts of America's university system to silence true believers on campus is about as subtle as a stack of Bibles falling on your head...."[11] Steve Pulaski of Influx Magazine, however, was less critical of the film, giving it a C+ and stating "God's Not Dead has issues, many of them easy to spot and heavily distracting. However, it's surprisingly effective in terms of message, acting, and insight, which are three fields Christian cinema seems to struggle with the most".[12] A number of sources have cited the film's similarities to a popular urban legend. The basic premise of a Christian student debating an atheist professor and winning in front of the class has been the subject of a popular Chick tract

As for this movie, its a shame! Its filled with rage and propaganda. What kind of person shoves beliefs down a dying man's throat?? Who would come up with this kind of a scene? Its like these "Christians" want people who believe differently dead! Its pathetic! There is no compassion in this movie and in the end its not Christian, its just pushing that version of Christianity that justified slavery, war, genocide, poverty and now is hell bent on destroying the rights of sexual minorities. I have no problem with people arguing for ideas they see as valid (which is what this movie is basically doing)....as long as they can reliably support their argument (which this movie does *NOT* do). Its in all our best interests to examine and discuss ideas and attempt to reliably determine which ones are good/helpful or bad/harmful. This is how society advances. Interestingly, its also why most societies have grown past many of the outdated religious concepts of the past.

Why do you feel you "desperately need ground to stand on against atheists"? What specifically bothered you about the movie?
@cabbitsd
@cabbitsd 9 жыл бұрын
I desperately need ground to stand on against the arguments of atheists because I'm surrounded on all sides by that religious standpoint and my knowledge of how to defend my faith is limited. Despite that I shamelessly believe in God, Satan, angels, demons, even the nephilim, and the work that Jesus did at Calvary to make salvation free and open to "whosoever" and everything else the Bible says, I lack what it takes to stand for it the way I should be. (Also, while I'm not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ... I am ashamed of my testimony to it.) What bothered me about the movie? BESIDES that this movie forever ruined my view of Superman and Hercules forever?! First of all, all of the characters in this movie who weren't Christian (and even one who was) were utterly antagonized to the point of extremity. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES could a university professor act with such blatant arrogance towards a religious viewpoint in this "politically correct" day and age that we live in and get away with it. No reporter interviewing a band no matter how terrible or religious the band was, ESPECIALLY if she knew she was dying of cancer, would ever be so professionally ignorant to any artist contributing to society. And even most rich people aren't so corrupted by their love of money that they cease to care about their mothers! They're mothers! Second of all, the dialogue in a lot of places drove me nuts by being far-fetched and "just a little too convenient" (ie: when the reporter told the christian band that she was dying or when the proud ex christian athiest gave over his life to Christ at the last second or that the hardcore atheist prof JUST SO HAPPENED to be an ex christian and JUST SO HAPPENED to be unequally yoked with a christian woman. The scene with the christian girl in the muslim family was touching, but it was a pointless "big lipped alligator moment"... as was most of the fluff with the preachers having rental car trouble. The movie would have been fine, and shorter, without it. Blatant Unnecessary and repetitive Newsboys propaganda is Blatant Unnecessary and repetitive. No doubt they're a great band... I've heard their old school stuff and it's really not bad... but honestly, do they need to plug themselves in the plot of this movie so many freaking times?! This was the MAIN thing that bothered me... I was expecting to get a LOT more meaty info on the Christian end of the Atheist / Christian debate on the existence of God out of this movie. It could have done with a LOT more of that and a lot less of the crappy non-memorable plot full of unbelievable, unrelateable characters, annoying, unrealistic dialogue, and more promo fluff for one band than the Kiss Comic book series. Did I mention that the movie ruined my view of Superman and Hercules forever?!

CabbitSD "I desperately need ground to stand on against the arguments of atheists because I'm surrounded on all sides by that religious standpoint and my knowledge of how to defend my faith is limited." I'd suggest you consider placing greater value on the virtue of an open-minded pursuit of truth. It's far healthier than imagining yourself in an endless war, surrounded by the enemy, dug in and desperately defending your point of view. You might just as well donate your brain to someone else to use, since you fear it so.

CabbitSD Atheism isn't a "religious standpoint". And as for defending your faith against it, you can't. All you can use is the faith thing and the fact they can't disprove anything you claim. And even that's tenuous (as well as extremely tedious), Occam's Razor and all.

I've seen the full film, and agree that there are some bad generalizations, but also some very realistic ones. This movie portrays a lot of youtube atheists very well, even if they won't admit it.... not all of them, don't overgeneralize, but many of them. They're not "all Christians" because they said "God's not dead".... believing there is a God, doesn't make you a Christian is just one outright over-generalization and lie done by the clip editor.

It occurred to me that an awesome movie could result if we merged the most important plot points of all of the fundie faith film scripts of 2014: ACT 1: Godless Education A doe-eyed, callow Christian is persecuted by his E-VIL biology professor, but with the help of the father of his hot, hot, HOT fundie girlfriend, he makes an ass of the E-VIL professor in a debate about evolution while his classmates cheer. ACT 2: The Set-Up The E-VIL atheist professor seeks revenge and conspires with his gay lover, an E-VIL atheist in the philosophy department. They enlist the aid of the philosophy professor's cousin, an ambitious, E-VIL atheist senator to frame our young hero for the murder of his hot, hot, HOT fundie girlfriend. Our hero goes on the run, is temporarily hidden in a Louisiana swamp by the Duck Dynasty guy. Meanwhile, the E-VIL professors are run over by a truck and as they lie dying in a pool of blood, they admit to a repellant, overbearing street preacher that they believed in god all along but hated him. ACT 3: On the Run Meanwhile, in a touching dream sequence, out hero goes to heaven and meets his dead girlfriend, who advises him to vacate the swamp. Our young hero is awakened by the baying of bloodhounds and runs for it. Fortunately, he has been hiding close by the New Orleans airport. He sneaks onto an airplane piloted by Nick Cage. The plane takes off but halfway through the flight, Cage gets word that the fugitive is on the plane. JUST as Cage is about to arrest our doe-eyed hero, the young man gets raptured. Act 4: Rapture In a touching denoument, our young hero is reunited with his dead girlfriend in heaven. Hand in hand, they joyfully look down from their cloud and enjoy the spectacle of the two evil atheist profs, roasted and served as entrees at a Christmas party while Kirk Cameron dances. How's THAT sound? I can already FEEL that Golden Raspberry award in my hands!

John Smith I am an atheist. Now, in my life, I have gone to several different churches of many different denominations, and when I expressed my distaste for the words that they spoke, do you know what their solution was? Find another church that you agree with. Keep going to different churches, until someone starts talking about a version of god that you like. Think about that for a second. That's what Christianity--that's what *all* religions are--drifting from church to church until you hear what you want to hear. You think it's amazing anyone can deny god because you spent your entire life selectively listening to the version of god that you wanted. Oh, and let me tell you--almost every church I had agreed on this one: God doesn't allow U-turns. You fuck up, you go to hell.

Bo Gardiner Well. I'm not in the mood to go into detail today. But the 3 parts that stood out to me most were at, 6:14 would you rather go to heaven and live eternally with Jesus? Or would you like to say goodbye to some people whom you'd one day see again and live the alternative?... 6:46 He'd just been killed not 5 minutes ago and wouldn't have even been in the news yet... And at 7:03. Saying, "God's not dead" does in NO WAY mean we hate Atheists, any more than a gay person saying, "I am gay" would mean they hate Christians. Now, I could go on. But as I said. I'm not in the mood today.

SuperStupidy Well, given that I have just as much evidence for the Christian Heaven, as I have for the Greek Hades, or the Norse Valhalla, I'd probably want to say goodbye to the people I love. Also, even if the news of the Professor's death hadn't spread, isn't it a little hamfisted the way the film sets of the tone of his death. Nobody really mourns his death. Even if you think death means eternity with Christ, *normal people* Christian or non-Christian alike feel bad when someone dies. Or do you treat all deaths exactly as this film does, and just happily go to the funerals of your loved ones, smiling because the deceased is with Jesus now - never mourning for them or shedding a single tear? I don't presume to speak for Bo, but I assume equating "God's not dead" with "I hate atheists" is A) a joke, and B) born out of the films abysmal portrayal of atheists. Atheists do not hate god - misotheists do. Atheists have secular sources of morality - they don't devolve into relativistic libertines. Atheists do not abandon sick loved ones because they're robots who don't believe in love, and treat relationships like business arrangements.
@Superstupidy
@Superstupidy 10 жыл бұрын
Vorpal Fnord It doesn't matter what YOU know about Heaven. The Reverend from the movie knew he needed to at least try to convert the Atheist in as little time as possible, assuming possible. He needed that chance to believe, or else he would have suffered much more than just death... In the Bible, Hell is described in detail, and it makes it VERY obvious that it's not the place you want to go. "Shoving your Faith down someone's throat." Can be interpreted differently depending on your beliefs. For Christians, it's going out of they're own way to try to save someone less butt. However, to other people who don't understand the concept of Hell, it's rude. Either way, thy don't HAVE to listen... But they'll regret that later... Death is only sad for the people who will miss the deceased. And even then, it's a selfish sadness. If you believe Jesus died for your sins and then you die, that's the best thing that ever happened to you.
@BoGardiner
@BoGardiner 10 жыл бұрын
SuperStupidy "6:14 would you rather go to heaven and live eternally with Jesus? Or would you like to say goodbye to some people whom you'd one day see again and live the alternative?" WHAT gives you, a complete stranger, the right to try to force YOUR beliefs on ME while I'm dying, and to substitute YOUR wishes for MINE on how I will spend MY dying moments? That is MY choice, NOT yours. How would you like it if you were praying while dying, and a Hindu prevented you by shouting in your face about Shiva? The fact that you can't see the disrespect and the immorality in that proves your belief system is a poor ethical guide. "6:46 He'd just been killed not 5 minutes ago and wouldn't have even been in the news yet." But we the audience know, and the filmmakers insult us by expecting us to laugh along with and merrily applaud the mockery of a man we seconds ago saw violently killed in a car accident. Then the Christians at the accident scene actually say the tragic death is a cause for celebration. Could it be in poorer taste? " 7:03. Saying, "God's not dead" does in NO WAY mean we hate Atheists" Of course not. That is, however, the message of the film -- that Christians should hate atheists. The claim that no atheist can be a moral person is hate speech. The further baseless portrayal of atheists as insane sociopaths drives the message of hatred toward an entire religious minority even further.

If only. You're counting on no one knowing how to google: "...[T]he 2014 film God’s Not Dead was still one of the more successful independent films of the decade. It more than quadrupled its $2 million budget in its opening weekend, and when it closed 40 weeks later, it had made more than $60 million in the US...Indie filmmakers dream of that rate of return... It’s a weird movie, but boy, did people love it. It was promoted by conservative and Christian organizations ranging from Alliance Defending Freedom to the Dove Foundation to Faith Driven Consumer. Christian celebrities endorsed it, from football players and Olympic athletes to pastors and well-known teachers of apologetics. Churches purchased curriculum for an outreach campaign that involved showing the film, and fans posted pictures of their tributes to it... The film’s success gave Christian movie studio Pure Flix (co-founded by Rev. Dave himself, David A.R. White) the boost it needed to become a relative powerhouse. Pure Flix launched a theatrical distribution arm in late 2015, and has since released a string of solid box office performers... [T]he studio has managed to parlay the success of God’s Not Dead into an alternative entertainment empire... It explicitly couples faith with conservative-leaning politics. The appearance of Duck Dynasty personalities in God’s Not Dead was just the start; by the third movie in the series, the cameos were from right-wing media figures like Dana Loesch and Jeanine Pirro..." www.vox.com/culture/2019/12/18/21012872/gods-not-dead-pure-flix-decade-2010s

Patriot Brad Brad, I don't think it's that most of the professing Christians "hate" atheists or gays, or anyone on here, really. But they (the atheists and non-believers) *Do. Their. Darndest* to come across as antagonizing, insulting and just plain downright mean. You don't have to read very far to discover the profanity they spew on here-name-calling, constantly begging the question, deliberately going off on rabbit trails, etc. in all the discussion threads. And the original uploader of course says nothing, because she's on their side and we're outnumbered. Now, I've seen signs of what appears to be their true vulnerability showing through at points-i.e., the real reason this movie angers and upsets them so much that they will go on and on about it and provoke arguments for weeks and months on end. But if you give them an inch-responding in meekness, sincerity and polite civility to those rare occasional genuine questions and objections they *Seem* to raise-they will then take a mile, and come roaring back at you with insults, smart remarks and passive-aggressive mocking. I've witnessed it happen time after time. So after a while, most of the Christian commenters just invoke Proverbs 26:5 and Mark 6:11, vote the video down, and move on. Unless the Christians here start sticking together and supporting one another (which frankly I don't see happening very much up to this point), we're not even going to successfully defend ourselves, much less make inroads into the Enemy's territory. Also, did the Christians commentators you're referring to literally say they "hate" atheists and gays? Okay, perhaps a few of the CINOs may have on rare occasion. But if the oft-tossed about term "homophobia" or "homophobic" (for example) is one you yourself utilize and/or identify with in your own discussions with them, then no, we're probably not working from the same Playbook. If you are a genuine believer, on the other hand, you know what the Word of God says and teaches about these things; and those who practice them; and I don't have to point out the biblical references to you-then you know how the Christian viewpoint (I'm not referring to the Westboro Baptist position here) is being deliberately mischaracterized and taken *waaaayyy* out of context by those who oppose it (and themselves). For the most part its a side issue for purposes of this video discussion, anyway; unless a discussion participant is an openly practicing homosexual activist also simultaneously claiming to follow Christ.
