Are you mad at the sock gnomes that live in your dryer for stealing your socks? Atheists hold themselves accountable for everything, Im pretty sure its the religious that relinquish control and responsibility for everything to their deity. (The Bible tells them so) Do something bad? No worries, You're magically forgiven! We blame the "world's trouble" on cause and effect. If something bad happens there is an actual cause for it, its not a mysterious plan unknowable to us.

You cannot logically argue something's "not dead" if it's *never* been proven to exist in the first place.

Logically you cannot argue that God doesn't exist. In order to do that you would have to know everything; be a god above God. Once you're the all-knowing god then you'd know... but you're not, no one is but God. God gives free will and time to us because He's patient. So, up to you.

@jamiesmith4293
@jamiesmith4293 10 жыл бұрын
If something hasn't been proven to exist in the first place, you're left in the area of uncertainty. And that's where "not dead" is. Here's why I think that: I'm sure they didn't call the movie "God is alive" because the reverse of it, "not dead", sounds the same, but it's not. Both "dead" and "is alive" are absolutes and require proof, which we can't get. "Not dead", however, is neither of those absolutes. It implies "alive", but it doesn't say "alive". It's in the area of uncertainty between the 2, which is the only place we can logically go. It's also where zombies and vampires exist.
@SubconsciousGatherer

John Smith "If something hasn't been proven to exist in the first place, you're left in the area of uncertainty." Does that apply to Santa Claus, fairies, and unicorns?
@jamiesmith4293
@jamiesmith4293 10 жыл бұрын
SubconsciousGatherer If something can't be proven to not exist, there is the opportunity for it to exist, even if it's extraordinarily unlikely. It looks ridiculous, even foolish, to put those things in the area of uncertainty since consensus is that none of them exist. Except santa is based on someone who really did exist, and there's a rare deformity in some deer that gives them a single small horn in the center of their forehead. In those 2 cases, the fantasy and imagination that surrounds them have made them out to be much larger than life. I don't know enough about the truth of the origin of fairies to comment on that one at this time.

Maybe a god or gods exist, but until there is evidence to support their existence I have no reason to believe that they do. Christian:I talk to him each day and everytime I pray. Atheist: Maybe you do, but I have no way to verify that that is what is actually happening or if it is just you talking to yourself. Christian: Why is it impossible that God could have not created man? Atheist: I am not claiming that that is impossible, but without evidence that that God created man I have no reason to believe it. This is really just a straw-man argument. You are commenting a lot about how this movie will misrepresent atheists (and it will), but this comment misrepresents Christians. Not all of us Christians say things like "God exists because I prayed" or "Because it's in the Bible". Many do, but not all..

If you sort the comments newest first you might be able to see it. His post made "atheist" straw man arguments along with his own statements. What I did was take his statements representing him as a Christian, and replaced the straw man arguments with my own. @TheDapperSwindler
@TheDapperSwindler 10 жыл бұрын
No, what's truly interesting is that Christians tend to interpret any kind of rational inquiry into their beliefs or a statement of disagreement as "nasty" or hateful. To me, that says a lot about the nature of their belief.
@TheDapperSwindler
@TheDapperSwindler 10 жыл бұрын
jakewfpf "Honestly, if an atheist had ever, just once came up to me and genuinely asked me to explain my belief and rationally argue my point in an accepting and respectful manor, i would agree with your statement, but you and i know well that that is not how it goes." No, actually, I don't know that. If that's been your experience then that is unfortunate. Although I have met atheists who are irreverent towards Christianity, I have met very few who openly insult someone for believing in a god. "You need not look far to see that Atheists are some of the most hateful, cynical, spiteful, reprobate people on the face of the earth who will stop at nothing to belittle you into insanity." Wow, really? In my experience, atheists tend to be the most open-minded, tolerant, and rational people. I've met far more Christians who judge others for being different from them, but you know what I don't do? I don't generalize them and call every single Christian hateful, cynical, or spiteful, because that wouldn't be fair. "They don't seek to save you from eternal pain like the Christian, they disrespect your beliefs and bully you into submission." You're generalizing again. If Christians respectfully discuss their beliefs with me that's perfectly fine, it's when they condescend to me, threaten me, or support laws based on their religion that I have a problem with them. If you think Christians cannot also be disrespectful people, then you're not living in reality, "They want you to join the bandwagon so they have someone to be depressed with and celebrate the meaninglessness of life with." What a straw man. Being atheist does not mean being depressed or you find life meaningless. I take it you haven't met many atheists before. "Honestly what is the great reward for not believing in God?" You're asking me a loaded question. Give me a reason to believe that this God exists, and we can go from there, but as it is you may as well be asking me "What is the great reward for not believing in Poseidon?" "that you believe that religion truncates technological advancement? Almost every great inventor, scientist, and brilliant mind of the last couple centuries have been Christians." Almost every one of them? Are you sure you can make that claim? Even if that were true, it wouldn't logically follow that religion does not at all impede the advancement of science. Look at how some states in America continue to resist teaching evolution in the classroom, or are teaching "intelligent design" alongside it. That's one example of how some religious groups are resistant to change because of what their holy book says, and some kids will either not learn about this actual field of science, or the waters will be muddied by pseudoscience peddled as a viable alternative. I don't think religion in general is the natural enemy of science, but I do think people use it quite often to justify staying ignorant of what we don't know instead of moving forward and discovering more. I don't know of any atheist who actively represses technological advancement because of their ideology. "There is no reward to be found in the atheist life, just hatred and pretentious contemptuous enmity." This is just insulting now. Don't tell me my life is not rewarding and it's full of hate. Not everyone needs your belief in a ruler of the universe to be a good person, you know. This right here is part of the reason why Christians tend to have a stereotype of being condescending, holier-than-thou, ignorant people, because some like you dishonestly assume something based on either your prejudices or your limited experience with the subject. "The reason that Christians are so quick to assume that your "inquiry" is one of hate, is because it almost always is." In my experience, the most outspoken atheists who speak against the Bible don't "hate" Christians, what they hate is misinformation and being lied to, and when they hear the 196th cop-out or logical fallacy from a Christian trying to justify their beliefs, they tend to get a bit irritated. There is a difference between "hate" and challenging someone's beliefs because you don't see any justification for them. "So don't be so surprised the next time you have a hard time talking to a Christian who is sick of hearing all the overused atheist slander and fallacious arguments about the Bible, to which they know absolutely nothing." It seems to me that on the whole, atheists know the Bible better than Christians, so I'm not sure what slander you're talking about. I've seen a lot of terrible things in the Bible and it seems pretty clear they're immoral, but if you ask a Christian they give you a long-winded excuse as to why it's not. The Christian also usually holds the presupposition that the Bible is true and that their God is all-loving and all-powerful, and the atheist is generally a skeptic who has done a bit of independent research on the subject. It doesn't take a genius to figure out which one is probably closer to the truth. "Have you read the whole Bible cover to cover? If the answer is no, than you have absolutely no right to even mention the Bible in debate. " Yes I have, but even if I hadn't, that wouldn't mean I would have no right to mention the Bible. If you make a claim about something that is clearly either false or unprovable, I don't need to have full knowledge of that something in its entirety in order to point it out. It's like if someone is showing me a perpetual motion machine and insists I have to understand every minute detail of it before calling shenanigans, when all I'd have to do is point out that it violates the laws of physics.

jakewfpf "Honestly, if an atheist had ever, just once came up to me and genuinely asked me to explain my belief and rationally argue my point in an accepting and respectful manor, i would agree with your statement, but you and i know well that that is not how it goes." *I think you are mistaking dislike for a religion as dislike for the believer.* "You need not look far to see that Atheists are some of the most hateful, cynical, spiteful, reprobate people on the face of the earth who will stop at nothing to belittle you into insanity." *Actually, knowing some atheists, I don't know any who are that way personally. So I do have to look far.* *I don't have to look far to find christians like the Westboro Baptist Church, though. And a more hatefilled group of people I cannot find outside of the neo-nazi's.* " They don't seek to save you from eternal pain like the Christian, they disrespect your beliefs and bully you into submission." *Actually, if you had read the bible, you would see that it is not eternal pain but that it only lasts until your sins are burned away, then your soul burns away as well and you die... permanently. But your point is irrelevant, as I do not even have to leave this video to find christians who are disrespecting my lack of belief (trying to convert me, by the way, is something I consider disrespect so... you are doing it too) and trying to bully me, like you currently are, with threats of "eternal pain" to convince me to your side. So... double standard?* "They want you to join the bandwagon so they have someone to be depressed with and celebrate the meaninglessness of life with." *You do realize that Nihilism and Atheism are separate concepts, right? They don't go hand in hand. Also, I am an atheist and I am not depressed. So, you know, way to incorrectly stereotype an entire group of people, Jesus would be proud of you.* "Honestly what is the great reward for not believing in God?, that you believe that religion truncates technological advancement?" *What is the great reward for not believing in Zeus? What is the great reward for not believing in Amaterasu? Idiotic argument. The biggest difference between and atheist and a christian is that the list of deities we don't believe in is one longer. Also, history has shown repeatedly that organized religion does, in fact, prevent proper technological advancement. The Dark Ages sound familiar?* "Almost every great inventor, scientist, and brilliant mind of the last couple centuries have been Christians." *Argumentum ad populum? Fallacious argument and fallacious logic. Also, false anyway.* "There is no reward to be found in the atheist life, just hatred and pretentious contemptuous enmity." *How do you know? I choose you, strawman fallacy!* "The reason that Christians are so quick to assume that your "inquiry" is one of hate, is because it almost always is." *I choose you again, strawman fallacy!* "So don't be so surprised the next time you have a hard time talking to a Christian who is sick of hearing all the overused atheist slander and fallacious arguments about the Bible, to which they know absolutely nothing." *Really? I haven't had a single Christian show any of my real arguments to be fallacious. Most of which come directly from the bible, so... you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.* "Have you read the whole Bible cover to cover? If the answer is no, than you have absolutely no right to even mention the Bible in debate." *Yes. NIV, KJV and the NKJV. Cover to cover. And apparently, I am more observant than you in regards to what I have read.* *However, that is irrelevant. Have you read all of the papers on the Theory of Evolution? Have you read the Poetic Edda? Have you read the Qur'An?*

As a theist, I find the arguments and anger coming from agnostics, atheists, and particularly from antitheists, to be full of self-righteous vitriol, and bitter dismissiveness of those who do believe in, or at lest in the possibility of, a creator or supreme being both bemusing and disturbing. Most of the deniers seem to be exactly the character Kevin Sorbo is playing in the film. Even if you are all correct, what is the point of so loudly and brashly trashing the possible existence of God? Do you elevate yourselves by doing so, or are you bothered by the fact that some have found comfort in a faith that you cannot? Many seem driven to go so far that they have essentially created a religion of anti-religion. I just don't get the negativity, but I will say this - I have found over the past 50 years of my life, that every argument put forth by an atheist has driven me towards a belief in a creator, and not away from one.

Even the most hardcore atheists I know believe in freedom of belief and freedom of opinion. None of them would abuse their power like the professor in the film to force their religion down people's throats. You're mistaking atheists criticizing religion for atheists trying to outright ban religion. Two very different things.

bravo to you Mike. For your rationality and saneness in the nasty mess that is KZbin comments :} I looked hard at going to see this film and decided not to because I felt Sorbo's character wasn't a fair representation of a rational athiest, and the plot did not strike me as a fair debate on the existence of God. It seemed more a story of a "Lost Christian" to me. But I like a world where I can disagree with sanely with another person, unlike what is mostly rediculous insanity in this comment section.

MsCherryKiss I would agree that Sorbo's character is both a lost Christian and an intelligent, angry man, but one point many miss is that his character is not portrayed as rational when it comes to his faith, or loss of it. Many other posters seem to think his character is what Christians view as an average atheist, when the character is, in fact, a portrayal of an extreme. All in all, we may not have too much of a disagreement over either the movie or philosophy in general, and it certainly is refreshing to have a civil discussion... something quite rare online or in person these days.

Look instead of putting the movie down when all you've seen is the trailer, wait to see the movie. It may be there's more to the movie than the professor being an atheist. It could be he's angry at God and so claimed atheism. Honestly that's what it seems like to me after watching 2 trailers. And though I understand where many of you are coming from I have heard Atheists says that before, say that God is dead. Not all but a small handful have.

But, but, but, but, Kevin? Your character IS a caricature. And not a good one either. The average college professor is not a fire-breathing ego maniac shouting "God is dead" to his students. More likely it's some soft-spoken middle aged man or woman with thick glasses asking students to use reason. This movie is feeding red meat to the Fundie audience. But hey, if you need the money, I guess that's all that matters to you.

There are college professors out there like his character unfortunately, I had one 2 years ago like that. You get expelled from regular school for saying "God" and in my college the Christian students and our friends were in arms because they were trying to restrict Christians. So poor uneducated person this movie is the best movie to come out this year, great acting, great actors, and just great all around.

@Uenbg
@Uenbg 10 жыл бұрын
CognizantPsyche I don't think they mean it as an argument for the existence of God (especially not when you hear it in a different formulation). Just a reminder to encourage a closer investigation of the validity of the promises made in the bible without actually going into detail. Normally said as a statement of fact, in this case just an attempt by Kevin Sorbo (the way he says it is indeed wrong, as christian almli mentioned and it creates in me a suspicion that anyone who says it that way has not truly contemplated being wrong while asking someone else to do so at that moment if they also start talking about 'what if you're wrong', which would be unreasonable at that point and it would probably be best to turn that question right back around and really press them to think about being wrong concerning whether or what God requires of them, making it more specific like that might help trigger those reasoning abilities). Also not a fact that relates to the question of whether God exists or not like you pointed out with your (mild form of) derision. But it is a fact that the atheistic worldview holds no particular promises comparable to that of most gods, including the one mentioned in the bible. Of course to an atheist the promises in the bible or other religious books are empty promises which is the main reason atheists complain that it's a silly argument in whatever form they come across it (as far as I've observed). But is that a good reason for theists to stop mentioning or referencing to what you might miss out on? The fact I mentioned remains, the importance of that fact concerning whether someone makes the decision to spend more time on an even closer inspection concerning these promises remains with it (motivation). Hence theists will most likely continue to remind you why it's important to them and why they feel it should be important to you as well, best get used to it, better for the nerves (another fact). ;) It's just more honesty, even when they say things wrong and need a little bit of help in saying what they wanted to say. I much prefer Kevin Sorbo's little stumble over the tricks in twisting logic that I've heard from the most famous atheists, the parrot squad (sorry, couldn't resist, I've been polite and politically correct for too long, I'm not a good politician, I make jokes, sue me, it's not an argument, sharing my opinion and thoughts to people who probably don't care, but whatever, I'm bored).

Uenbg Most of the times I have encountered Pascals Wager they mean it quite literally, and even fewer times do I ever get a response when challenged, if I do it ends up being along the lines of "Well those other religions and gods are false." I see what you are getting at, however it is still a very flawed outlook and mentality. If you look at it objectively it can also come off as highly narcissistic as well, stating that the individual's belief is the only alternative one to _every_ other one ever conceived that results in salvation. The problem is that it is not a 50/50 chance of being correct, in reality it is more like international lottery odds. For every religion there are countless other sects, each believing (generally speaking, there are some exceptions) that they have the correct version of religion and every other one is wrong and doomed. Lets not also forget the ancient dead religions and deities that also boasted the same claims. Sure during Pascals time it would have been a more effective argument, I mean knowledge (and education) was pretty controlled and to the average person they only knew of Christianity and Paganism, which to them seemed to be the same thing as atheism. However in the age of information it just makes the wielder appear ignorant. "But it is a fact that the atheistic worldview holds no particular promises comparable to that of most gods" Not necessarily. True we do not have the belief of an afterlife, but the other things that people derive from the belief in deities: hope, love, peace, purpose, belonging, community, survival, strength, security, the "filling of the gap in your heart," spirituality, and many of the other emotions and benefits from faith are not exclusive to religion, an atheist can find all these things in other forms and other sources, I most certainly have.

Bernd Bananenbieger I agree, from the trailer it seems like what I call, "The Rebel Alliance Fallacy" meaning people like to think of themselves as being some sort of rebel. To be honest, Christians are in the vast majority, but I think some of them kind of fall to this fallacy. I think this movie doesn't really make any new points. It kind of builds up on ideas that have been used before. On the other hand, atheism also builds up on ideas used before and usually seeks to prove them with evidence. For example, in general the idea that reason should be above faith goes all the way back to the Enlightenment era.

politicalsheepdog Non-christians are removing religion from places it does not belong. It has no place in standard school classes. It has no place in government. As for your lives, nobody cares about that and nobody is actively trying to prevent you from believing (persecution complex, much? Seriously, what is it with you christians and thinking that if someone disagrees with you that they are trying to force you to do something?). Consequently, there is only one place in the world with more christians... the European Union. So this "turning its back on God" crap you are spouting is patently false. Actually, total number of christians has continued to go up as the population goes up. So you would be more accurate in saying that as the amount of people who are "turned toward God" goes up, our country seems to decline further. Hmmm.

You have taken God out of the school and therefore there is more school shootings then in recorded history. You have taken God out of the government and therefore America is now in serious trouble. Most of the people have turned their back against God and he has therefore tuned his back on them. There is more drug use and all that other bs because of the fact that God is no longer allowed to be discussed in schools. Growing up we said prayer in school and said the pledge as was written and I didn't have metal detectors in the halls and never heard of people shooting them up. God said that if you deny me in front of anyone He will deny you in front his father.

Even though almost all our politicians are Theist (Thomas Jefferson was rumored to be Atheist though, he just didn't want to say it, for obvious reasons at the time) and Atheism will be in the minority until people become accepting of it as just something that's different, not necessarily bad.

His portrayal of atheists is horrible and untrue. He doesn't even know what an atheist is. This is just some brainwashed christian propaganda. For example he is portrayed as hating god. Atheists don't hate god because you can't hate something you do not believe in, the same way you do not hate Gandalf just because he doesn't exist. Also he says, if i'm right I gained alot and i'm wrong I lost nothing. Well that is just utter bullshit. How about hours upon hours worshipping an imaginary being. That is a massive waste of life, precious life that we most likely just have once for a breif moment. Although i am not a 100 percent sure a deity of some sort or a afterlife doesn't exist, i choose not to believe in it because there is no evidence what so ever to back it up. There is a reason some atheists are so pissed of at religion (mainly the people pushing religion on others). And that is that it is spreading ignorance and stupidity all over the world to control people. We do not hate religious people themselfs. We don't blame them because they have been brainwashed their whole life just like their parents. And it works because of fear in death. People believe anything just to be told they are going to live forever. Instead of actually finding out what's out there they just believe something nice without evidence because it feels good. I have this movie on DVD and absolutely loved it. My favorite part was the dinner scene when the professor has a bunch of people over for dinner, his girl accidently left the I think wine in the car. Earlier the two of them had a discussion on it and everything seemed cool. During the dinner scene, I forget what's going on exactly but she says something about how she is a Christian and he insults her for it. I know it's a movie but when I saw her about in tears, I wanted to reach through the TV screen and help her out. Yes I am a Christian and I would never throw my beliefs in anyone's face. I have talked to people that do not believe in God and have heard what they had to say. There was even a couple of times where I would even consider what they are telling me is truth. What's funny, not long after I do that, consider there is no God, I get proven there is a God. Atheists can believe what they want and I would not try to change their mind but if they wanted to have an adult conversation with me about it, I am open for that. Just don't insult me and my beliefs as I won't insult you and your beliefs even though you don't believe which is why your Atheist.

Of course you love it.. It gives in to every strawman ever created about the atheist vs christianity issue :) I mean.. can you be any more cliche when the atheist is an asshole who merely rejected his beliefs because god didnt cure cancer?? Lol this movie is simply emotional porn for christians... Ah and the demonization of islam was beautiful... Especially given the irony that to Muslims, Christianity is every bit as insane. It's funny that they should bring in islam, when that just begs the question "What is islam is the right religion and all christians go to islamic hell?" .. .no one can answer it...

I like how Christians keep saying "live and let live" or "i don't try to change people's mind", yet that's actually precisely the opposite of what they do.

Christians are called, by Jesus, to spread the Gospel throughout the world, in a peaceful way. No Christian should say they are not trying to change people's minds. That would mean they are doing nothing about all of the people who are on the road to eternal Hell. For every person that I help to see the reality of Jesus, I rejoice, because they are now on the path to eternal paradise, and I pray for God to bring me another.

***** Yes, bring forth your epic butthurt because I called your jerk celebrity prophet the jerk he is. XD Look, Fabio. I can call anyone I want a jerk. I can call you a jerk. I can call him a jerk. I can call the Pope a jerk. You can suck on the loli of NoFucksToGive if you don't like it. I was linked to this video and thought it looked interesting. How dare I watch your precious "christian" video! Why not put a filter on it, "only christians allowed," that way we "fascists" won't hurt your widdle feewings by expressing an opinion. You and your prophet seem to have issues with free speech, which is your issue, not mine. Don't want to hear opinions from other people? I suggest you get off the interwebs. Maybe join a religious cult or zealots commune. They're epic-ally capable at stifling personal expression, and your sensitivities will be safe and sound.

+Fabio Bulferi Who is this "we" and "you" you are speaking of? Not me, since I said NOTHING of any of that sort. You're the one that was rude, Fabio. You're the one telling me to not watch videos. You're the one screaming "fascist." I said nothing about christians, atheists, or any of the above drama you just foisted onto me as a convenient stereotyping label. All so that you could justify insulting me. And yet again, as you seem to have a reading comprehension issue, I was linked to this video (IE- a friend sent it to me), and since it looked interesting I watched it. Or should I censor myself and the content I consume because I might offend your delicate sensibilities? Do I need to explain more? How am I to know that Sorbo is a self-indulgent jerk if I DON'T watch his video interview? I only know him from his acting, so how am I supposed to know PRIOR to watching said video that I wasn't going to like him sans his acting persona? Maybe if you don't *like* being called a little dictator, you should stop *acting* like one. And a paranoid one at that. Talk about hypocrisy.

Kyle Weaver As an atheist I don't believe in any god but I do believe that it is possible for that to change if someone had a very compelling argument. I would say the same is true for you as none of us can be 100% sure of our beliefs, and if we are then it would be foolish.

And oddly enough, I had a 'correlation(al)' experience such as this. I had a college professor in philosophy who in fact (I found later) was not only a holder of a PhD in this, but was also an ordained Christian minister as well. I don't disclose names out of respect, but he had reportedly actually consulted with the US Senate in his earlier years in Washington DC, and was by my own accord - as well as others - quite an impressive and intelligent person.

I have one bone to pick with the interview. Paul says if we are wrong "we are, of all people, most to be pitied." Read 1 Corinthians 15:12-19. We have a lot on the line here. Other than that, cool interview. Going to see the movie tonight. I hope it's good.

He says "If I'm wrong I've lost nothing, but if I'm right I've gained everything." Wrong. If atheism is right there is no afterlife. All you have is this life. And if there is no god, that means you wasted your entire life believing in something that does not even exist. You spent your one and only life trying to please and live up to something that is not even there. Wasting your life is losing quite a bit.

I find this idea fascinating. I was RAISED atheist and never "hated" God, just as many Christians are forced into a hollow "faith" by pushy parents, I was forced into a lack of belief. As many adolescents rebel against dominating parents by renouncing this false, forced "faith", I rebelled by getting baptised. I started out Methodist for several years, then became a standard bad American Catholic :). Coming from this unusual viewpoint, I can say that there are several serious problems inherant to atheism- 1) The lack of a primary mover- what caused the Big Bang? 2) The assumption that if we cannot detect something with our scientific instruments and senses, it can't exist, and yet, the frequent mention of "dark matter" in the universe, detectable only by its gravitational pull. An awful lot of something with mass is out there that we really can't detect or study. What if something like this, only without mass, would exist? 3) Meaninglessness of life and suffering- let's face it, life often sucks. It sometimes seems like loss piled on misery piled on hopelessness. If this is all there is, we should logically all go off ourselves. No, I mean right now, this second, preferably in a minimally painful fashion. Atheism thus ends up advocating for the complete eradication of humanity. However, this leads to another problem... 4) Even if we want to say that the world would be better off without people, why do we care about the lives of the animals and plants that would be helped by the end of humanity, either, if their lives are ultimately nasty, brutish, short, and so miniscule as to be meaningless, too? There are several problems caused by Christians, but the key difference is that they are not caused by the Christian belief system, but rather by Christians failing to follow their supposed beliefs. Some of these include: 1) A sense of superiority. A person may attend church weekly, volunteer to help pass the collection plates around, tithe, avoid certain sins he considers heinous (murder, adultery), and then judge those not doing some or all of these things to be somehow inferior. 2) Excessive guilt. Well-meaning parents have held God up for ages as the all-powerful, all-knowing Father who may cast you into Hell because He knows every little thing you do or even THINK that you shouldn't. The idea is to get kids to behave better, but it often either produces kids desperate to escape this prying eye by rejecting God entirely or, conversely, produces people with a serious persecution complex. 3) Splitting off and projection. This is the worst effect of something that can sometimes be called "religious fervor". It is also a commonly accepted psychological phenominon, in which a person or persons pretend that they lack certain undesirable traits (like "immorality"), find them in an "other" (in this case, a non-Christian or even the "wrong kind" of Christian), and can then attack them with absolute venom without self-destructing. This may lead to that oxymoron, "religious war". 4) A sense of fatalism. If God makes everything happen, there is no point in trying to change anything, now is there? It is all already as God wants it to be. This naturally results in a lot of anger because of all the suffering in the world, which may then lead to a hatred of God or to #2, excessive guilt over being angry with God. Again, the distinction is that the problems of Christianity can be fought and are not inherant to it, while the problems of atheism are inherant to it and can not be fought without renouncing the fundamental lack of belief in God. This is why I converted at 19 and have remained converted almost 13 years now. I also feel that the Catholic Church has done the best job of preserving Christ's teachings as He gave them, so I remain Catholic in spite of disagreeing with Church hierarchy on a number of points. I am curious to see what people will say in response to my points.
