There's been a trend in recent years for religious nutjobs to want to homeschool their kids so they aren't exposed to "impure thoughts" like *gasp!* LGBTQ people actually existing and talking about racism! OMG the horror!. The homeschooling thing is rightfully coming under fire since a lot of those parents are essentially making their kids ignorant by keeping them from learning about the real world.

I believe the New Atheist Movement pushed more people towards "radical Christianity" than all the Christian films combined ever could. It may still have been a necessary venture but in the medium term, the power of the backlash is not to be underestimated. These films have little effect on anything, except as a source of comedy for satirists. Right wing news media is of far greater propaganda value. Although, if David A.R. As a former Christian (currently agnostic) who was homeschooled with religious curriculum for several years, I have no idea what this film is getting at. The government never sent cyborg social workers unannounced to the house and, unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to have Reverend Dave sit in my living room and commit the apparently illegal act of talking about Noah. In that sense, I feel like I may have missed out. Dave and his Noah lesson seem pretty hardcore. On a serious note, no one cared about the fact that I was homeschooled with a Christian curriculum. It wasn't uncommon where I grew up, the program was accredited, and it was basically perceived in the exact same way as any other form of homeschooling or online learning. Definitely not an oppressive situation in my experience.
@Kylopod2 жыл бұрын
As a Jewish person who did some homeschooling back in the 1990s, let me say an important caveat: homeschooling regulation varies greatly by state, and has changed over time as well. That said, it’s not surprising that the description of US law in this film is ludicrous. There are literally no restrictions on the teaching of religion outside of public school. All those controversies over creationism and prayer in the classroom concern church-state issues that simply don’t apply to private schools or homeschooling.
@Tim85-y2q2 жыл бұрын
TBH, there was a time when at least some states did take a harder line against homeschooling, but those issues were largely resolved in favor of home schoolers decades ago. Every state now recognizes the right to home schooling and while there certainly are those who oppose that and/or want to see it more highly regulated, but they don't really have any political juice.

Speaking as an educator the few times I've gotten homeschooled kids who were now in foster care placement have been far behind their peers and oftentimes it's a little to late to help them with reading, math, etc to get them anywhere close to grade level. The only thing I and other teachers want is for homeschooled kids to be held to the same academic standards that our students are held to. That they are actually learning. Now that's not to say all homeschools are bad. I know great people, they have real curriculum and they aren't doing homeschooling as a way of control but so that their child (in most cases a kid who has health issues that take them out of school or something along those lines) can have a learning environment that is more fitted to their needs.

Except they were told what they were supposed to teach the kids and decided not to do that. Isaiah Washington played a death row inmate getting saved by Clint Eastwood in True Crime (1999)... William Forsythe played a psychotic crackhead murdering gangsters and innocent civilians in Out for Justice (1991)... HOW THE FUCK DID THEY END UP HERE? The Cinema Snob mellowing on the God's Not Dead series... If you had told me this back in 2016, I'd think you were crazy. Very interesting to see how a franchise and a film reviewer change over time. With the third movie apparently being the perfect way to wrap up the series, I guess that makes this entry the "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" of God's Not Dead movies!
@jadedheartsz2 жыл бұрын
after getting fired from Grey's Anatomy for using a homophobic slur at T.R. Knight Washington really went off the deep end. Forsythe I think just isn't all that picky about which roles he takes(he's done a LOT of direct to video films). Crystal Skull wasn't that bad.

Why didn't Rev Dave and his church St Judes also start a school? Even in LIberal California and LIberal New York and Liberal Massachusetts there are "Christian Parochial schools" of many denominations that are more affordable than other private schools. An example would be Regis School in New York City, Oaks Christian School, Mater Dei in California?

The court cases they cite at the end include parents suing a school district because they were using their kids preferred pronouns and names instead of dead names without informing parents (aka subjecting them to being beaten or thrown out of the house). No idea why they stated the Scarlett Z one but that was just a custody case bc someone tried to adopt a child while living together and not married, failed to get one of their names listed as legal parent and then was screwed out of custody bc he didn't establish parentage adequately . I think the "teaching Noah" thing was just their easy to defend version of parental rights.
@photofreak562 жыл бұрын
That case is why at my job we have two weeks of "keep safe" training. Basicly if a kid uses they them or is trans we tell them that at school we will use their prefered name and pronouns but will have to use a dead name when it comes to the parents as a safety mesure to insure they aren't hurt. Along with making sure they have a safety plan in place incause a child is thrown out of their home or has to deal with religuse abuse. Its just really fucked up we even have to have this sort of thing but yea.

The anger is back with this one. Not only is the movie based on the lie that religious homeschooling is under threat in the US (it isn’t) but also deliberately misrepresents the arguments against religious homeschooling. Pureflix wouldn’t happen to have a homeschooling program of their own now, would they? Also, Pureflix is still not available in Greece, so I have to use a VPN. I guess we have a higher percentage of the wrong kind of christians for David “Jesus Man!” White’s taste.

There's no war against home-schooling. Just checks and balances, ensuring children get a decent education. Parents who want to home-school should be able to read and write, pass basic arithmetic tests (possibly algebra, geometry, trigonometry), geography, history, physics, chemistry ...all stuff I learned in public school. There's a good reason why teachers are vetted. Home-school parents are free to teach their children anything they like at home. But the division of church and state was specifically designed by the Founding Fathers as to not alienate people and their religions.

From there we see the Christians all running away from disintegration rays and plasma laser guns.

I can appreciate that you think well of these people. And it's true, they were kind to you and they've taken everything in stride. But I'm sorry, this is some of the most Insidious propaganda out there. What you see in this movie is beat-for-beat what is playing out in some of the more conservative states in America. For one example just take a close look at Florida. Florida has been aggressively doing what it can to under fund and eliminate public education and push people into private schools. These private schools are not accredited, and often the people teaching at them are not in any way shape or form educated to be teachers. Take a look at newspaper's like the Orlando Sentinel. There are frequent articles that go into great detail about the horrific conditions at the schools, the horrific lack of Education. Using Florida as just one example, if something is not done soon to push back on this kind of nonsense, it will be a state where the majority of all education is held by private non monitored organizations that are led by people who are teaching that have not been trained to be a teacher, using textbooks that are created by religious organizations. So yeah, I can appreciate that you think these people have been nice to you and fair, and they might be decent people in other ways, but they are pushing dangerous rhetoric and dangerous ways of thinking that are being wrapped in a genial cover
@merchantfan2 жыл бұрын
Yeah- when the case is this obvious and false you have to ask yourself what they are actually trying to defend. The court cases at the end get skipped over but include an anti-trans case
@merchantfan2 жыл бұрын
@Jamie Lee I know he doesn't run the sort higher level crit blog that would do something like Google a bunch of court cases dumped at the end of a film but it is a depressing reminder that the purpose of propoganda is to convince, not make a good product and on how important it is to keep a critical eye while watching propaganda. These films seem amateurish but considering how much money they make and who makes them they likely have someone who understands propaganda very well behind the scenes. Heck they might be amateurish partly just to seem "homey" and grassroots
