Jesus was there to fulfill it, and make it unnecessary to follow it anymore. Hence the reason why, at the Last Supper, he spoke of a New Covenant. Had Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob (or all 3) been born after this, they would've needed to accept Jesus, as we all do. I hope this helps.

He IS merciful towards His children... IF they reject these false gods and their teachings. Unfortunately, today, many Christians don't understand what they're up against. They're not taught in their churches by the pastors (priests know the Truth, and they deliberately deceive their congregations into worshiping God's Adversary, instead). The pastors are not taught what is truly in the Bible... the spiritual war that is going on between God Most High and His Adversary, and His Adversary's followers, both in the angelic host and in humanity. If they DID know the Truth, then we wouldn't be in the condition we are in, now. We'd be up in arms against them. But the majority of people who say they are Christians, are still in darkness... they still follow the ways of the fallen angels, which are the teachings of the world, the ways of the world. When you realize this, then you can understand what you're up against, you can fully put on the Armor of God to reject those teachings, entirely. Too many don't understand, don't get this.

Hot take that was obvious to everyone before 1945: The term "freedom of religion" as used by the founding American generation was in reference to the various sects and denominations of Christianity. Baptist, Presbyterian, Anglican, Quaker, etc. were all free to practice their Christian faith. It wasn't in reference to Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Shintoism, etc.
