As a former competitive skater, I am amazed by the abilities of these very young skaters. I was only learning a single axel at 12. I never could have imagined that triple and quad axels were possible. Now into my mid 60s, I still love to skate, and can still do a spiral. No spins or jumps, anymore - sadly.

Hello, i am 61 and have just broken my shoulder by trying a ball spin one year ago, alone. I skate seriously since i am 48 (three times in a week).Before i had learnt by myself, since i was 13 years seeinG Scott Hamilton on Olympic games in 1984, i told me that i could do it. My fracture is very little but hard to heal : the point who order arm muscles. It is completely healed now though the physiotherapist did not beleive i will recover, but I am afraid to go on the ice again, i do pilates and yoga but i miss skating and i think i wil go on. All people around me said i am too old even when i was 48, but every time i think i will stop definitively i see a gymnastic woman who is still competitive at 98. I use protections that I made by myself. I did only single jumps, but though they told me we could not do it hoped yet the double... Now I dont hope any more, but yet...Just before my accident , i had succeeded in doing the back spIn. I think that it is only technical, i am not very flexible but i work it that also. I have always used knees protections that protected them by maintaining the articulation. One girl told me that I was a Ninja tortle. I do also all medical revews to watch the abilities of my body (bone densitometry) Fortunately what i prefer is the dance on ice and that does not need jumps. Skating is the only sport I like really, and the COC in France where i skate is really wonderfull with adults who want to begin thit sport as a hobby. When they see me, parents go on ice to skate with their children, they thought they were too old to do something at 40 years. Ah and I am lefthanded, all is very complicated for me because I am always in reverse and can't have all the space i need for jumps. I see this vidéo in order to find new way to do movements, and it is funny to see how they did the walz jump in 1900s, how it began. and I think i ll try the illusion or charlott special, for the fun... (i do camel spin an sit spin) hope i wont broke another bone Don't worry, be happy, it is really a fine sport. Ice maintain good health😊😉

The early footage in the 1900’s was so mesmerizing. It honestly made me feel sad and nostalgic for something I never experienced, but there was so much wonder and joy evident in those shots, something very human in the sport as it was being invented that sometimes feels missing now. I disagree with a lot of fans that the sport is only about jumping now, and I actually think this shows a wonderful visual progression of expression and artistry in the sport as well, perhaps peaking with Evgenia and Aliona. However, The 80’s through early 2000’s were so much about innovation and hope for what could be achieved by the human body, and now that we’ve actually achieved quads (and a quad combo!) it feels like there is just a demand for perfection and progress even at the expense of the humans involved, especially in ladies. The end of this video did feel harrowing in that sense, with younger and younger Russian girls doing more and more technically. We’re definitely at a strange turning point in the sport, for better or worse, but this was a wonderful visual representation of how skating has changed over 100 years.

@@silviaquesada2499 Yes, it worries me as well. At this point, it's impossible to ignore that there is something very wrong with Sambo-70's coaching methods and mentality. I was reading the other day that Elizaveta Tuktamysheva credits her long career and lack of serious injury to listening to her body and not jumping when she's even a little hurt, which is a credit to her coach Alexei Mishin as well. It makes me sad that so many talented Russian girls didn't get to develop in the same way.

As someone who has followed the singles circuit since 1992 and Albertville (except the fear of Sochi) I am dismayed at the Russian delegation scouring schools, seeking the correct body-types for their propaganda factories. They go into residential training schools and the families are placated with a stipend. The training takes lithe bodies and contorts them for sport. The tiny winners have such a small performance-life window, but they sacrifice their bodies for the rewards to their families. After one cycle, they have peaked and fade away. Have you seen many past Russian Olympic winners two or three years later? Their training partners have long been discarded and a new group is in their place. The factory must keep running.

But my boys are starting to get into ice hockey and I was thinking of getting them figure skates as well as player skates because figure skating looks harder but could help them if they get really into ice hockey. Takes a lot more balance it looks like.

Almost every activity started with men because women in ancient times were not allowed out of the house. Their only allowed activities were household chores and childcare. So things like figure skating, horseback riding, any other sport, as well as things like plays and dramas were exclusively MEN. Plays on both sides of the planet (Japan and England) used to have young boys dress up as women for the "female" roles because women were not allowed to be actors. Now, horseback riding and figure skating is completely dominated by women, but both activities used to be exclusively men because women were not allowed.

@@josiemcbride3646 What are you judging by to say it became a sport in the 1920s? Figure skating as a "sport" is a lot older than the 1920s. In 1742, when the first ice skating association was formed, the Edinburgh Skating Club. The first instructional book concerning ice skating was published in London in 1772. The first skater to accomplish an Axel was its creator, Axel Paulsen, in 1882 at the first international figure skating competition, which was held in Vienna. "You might be surprised to learn that this sport where women now shine was initially seen as solely the purview of male athletes" The International Skating Union (ISU), which still oversees international skating competition, was formed in 1892 and hosted the first World Figure Skating Championships in 1896: just four men competed in the event. Then in 1902, a woman, British figure skater Madge Syers, entered the competition thanks to a loophole in the rules; there was no written rule that specifically banned women. The WFSC closed the loophole soon after and barred women from competing in the Worlds.

I just got tired of the politics, and the ISU changing the marking system simply to hide the dishonest judges that kept getting re-hired and their wrists gently slapped for colluding. So unfair to those hardworking skaters, that they claim they invented the new marking system for. The last few minutes of this video honestly was a little grotesque. Human bodies with absolutely zero artistic merit, simply contorting and twirling as fast as it can go. It truly isn't a sport any longer, it's just a twirling competition for the youngest and skinniest possible who can do this. It's really horrible and boring to watch.

It’s interesting how the different styles evolved. Back in the teens and 30s the bent free legs were the style, but in the later 20th century that would have been a serious performance fault. today it all seems to be about jumping and seeing just how many revolutions you can get, but not so much about actual “skating”. Style today tends to be a whole lot of arm flailing that frankly isn’t really very pretty to watch. When Peggy Fleming did that very simple outer edge spread eagle to a single axel to another outer edge spread eagle, it was lovely. It’s still lovely today. Less emphasis on revolutions and more on actual skating skills and musical interpretation would make today’s sport better-in this old lady’s opinion.

ALL the skaters spin and jump in the same counter-clockwise fashion. One woman, 1980's was exclusively clockwise. But NONE of them did jumps/spins in both rotation modes. I imagine it is difficult enough to do a quad jump in the first place. But what about the skill needed to do a clockwise quad followed immediately by a counterclockwise quad or triple? Since there is a definite increase in required skill over the years in order to be at the top of the world rankings then wouldn't the next step be ambidextrous jumps and spins?
@GoddessArwen17 Жыл бұрын
There are people who spin in both directions and will put them in the same spin combo. It's not super common, but judges do award extra points for it. The only people I think sometimes jump in both directions is some Pair girls who will do their throw jump in the "normal" direction because of their partner, but when they jump solo, they won't. But most skaters do jump in the same direction, even if they're one of the skaters who can spin in both directions. I think we will see quint jumps before skaters start trying to jump in both directions.

Absolutely agree. I hate when brilliant athletes are creating something beautiful and difficult and painful and then some idiot behind the table says sorry guys, this year nothing. Not many can do this torture next four years.

I noticed the latter half - or even more - was nearly all ladies. (And it does seem to be very much based on jumps now. At the expense of dance particularly.)

Death spin for me is when the man hold woman's feet and she have the head near the ice while turning. If she touch the ice, skull and spinal broken. It is very dangerous and creepy, hence the name. I dont know but perhaps it is forbidden now in competitions. Candeloro salto is not shown : forbidden also i think.
@GoddessArwen17 Жыл бұрын
What you're talking about is called a headbanger. Headbanger and death spiral are not the same things. Headbangers are banned from competition yes, but skaters do them all the time in shows.
@Methanne Жыл бұрын
@@GoddessArwen17 so, death spiral is an inflated name. it seams less dangerous than when the man carry the woman over his head. If she fall, the hight is little. For Headbanger , the name is creepy also : it says that the head must touch the ice. Brrr😬🤔
@GoddessArwen17 Жыл бұрын
@@Methanne oh the name is absolutely overkill. 😂 Death spiral isn't dangerous at all compared to most other moves. But that is what it's called.

Interesting that the evolution of figure skating has been as creative as that we see with skateboarding. I hope boarding never becomes such a technical, conservative sport as figure skating.

I question the wisdom of having such young girls do such difficult jumps. It can't be good for their body.
