This is one of the most underrated songs and music videos in history. The music is perfect, the lyrics are simple and make the point without being too wordy. A gem of simplicity. The music, the mix, wow, really, every time I hear it I get goosebumps!!! And as for the video, is just a masterpiece, it is an amazing piece of art, you have that the technology to morph didn't exist at the time, these are simple and basic wipe effects done with video that was capture on "tape". That's right, the material no matter how good the camera, and lenses were was put into a tape, no digital stuff. It is just amazing, thaks Goodley and Creme!!!!

My dad borrowed my car a while back and left his 80s nu-wave mix CD in the stereo for me to listen to. He told me to check out this one at the end and said it was on an episode of Miami Vice. The first time I listened to this song all the way through, I got chills. This is one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve ever heard - I can’t believe I haven’t heard it on any of the big 80s radio stations or Spotify playlists! Was it this underrated back then, too?

@seanpratchler1888 --That's a great story, and I can relate because something similar happened to me. I was once stopped at a railroad crossing, with Tom Petty's _American Girl_ playing on the radio. The crossing's lights and bell were were exactly in sync with the song's refrain. And I mean exactly. I couldn't but laugh out loud, and because I was alone in the car, it must have made a weird site to the other drivers alongside. I didn't care, it was a great moment.

It's a bit evocative of I'm Not In Love, in that it's got a very pared-down rhythmic backing track, and the emotional vocal out front is everything. It's a great song. I have to say though that I'm Not In Love is a masterpiece, particularly for its time.

That's right. Once graham Gould and Eric Stewart who founded the band started to impose thier songwriting commerciality on the band. Eric Stewart took control from then on. The og band was over. Godley and creme were heading in a different direction. The last song that Godley and recorded with 10 cc was never let it slip away. Godley didn't like the song due commercial nature. There is a terrific documentary about the band. Eric Stewart was in total control to the point where he ruled out Godley and cremes participation in future reunion. And he hires musicians who are friends of his. Godley said that he didn't know about the reunion and wasn't told about. The band tours without either of them. Godley says that those 10 cc days in the past

nice sentiment, but.. in my experience with writing -- not so true. To make it universal, strip out some of the specifics... else you'll trip someone up going "ok, well.. I don't really identify with that" - i mean, this is universal cause the lyrics are beautifully, perfectly generic. - and I don't mean the generic in a bad way.

You struck a chord with me. The last time my family was fully intact was in 1981, just shortly before we lost my dad to a motorcycle crash. We were able to continue, of course; we had to. And there are good memories from that time (my college days, my brothers and sister still liking me, my mother not hit by Altzheimer's yet). I can look back and think; "my god, we were all so damn young".

No one should have been surprised by the creative genius of Godley and Creme. They directed the video for Sting's song Every Breath You Take.

This song is a monument. Simple, effective, dramatic yet restrained, minimal yet so grandiose and brimming with presence, emotionally evocative, flawlessly produced and recorded. Just a statuesque recording that towers over so many of their peers. Not only the best single of the 80s but surely one of the greatest of all time. Lightning in a bottle kind of record that could come out today and still sound timeless. I’m always so struck by the sense of physical space and atmosphere that bassline portrays. It’s huge.

@@rikk319 No, it’s utterly romantic. You’re missing it if you think this is analytical. Heartache, pain and suffering is the major ingredient surrounding romanticism. Get it together ffs.

@@PS987654321PS Watching the man who bookends the video crying, and multiple other people showing varying degrees of negative emotions--hopelessness, worry, exasperation, and even rage. This is as much romance as "Every Breath You Take" is romantic. Sting has mentioned multiple times that the Police song is about a stalker...but it doesn't stop people from playing it at their wedding reception. FFS--the title of the song is "Cry", not "Romance". Sure, people can do what they want...but it doesn't change the original intent of the artists.

@@rikk319 Don’t confuse the video with the song. Also, it’s a mistake to conflate this song, or any other “romantic” song with Every Breath you Take. They are different songs. Also, romance is not all happiness, joy, positivity, hope, sentiment. For many, the notion of the romantic is fatalistic which is probably closer to the human condition and human experience. It no doubt though will differ from person the person and culture to culture.

I'm from the MTV generation. We were fortunate to witness MTV change music history. For me, there was one video that stood above the rest, Godley and Creme, Cry. On MTV, everything was moving, moving very fast. From Michael Jackson's, Thriller, to Peter Gabriel's, Sledge Hammer, to Madonna grabbing her crotch in, Express Yourself, sometimes I would get a headache turn the TV off. Too much visual noise. When I first saw, Cry, I froze. I could not move. I was speechless. It was melancholy and slow and the morphing of faces was something never seen before, literally. It was revolutionary. It was a full five years after Cry that Sinead O'Connor hit hard with her similar, Nothing Compares to You. Unfortunately, things that are bombastic and make the loudest noise are the most remembered and Cry's focused, inward look at sadness and loss is mostly forgotten. Also, the digitized video you see on KZbin and elsewhere is only a facsimile of what this video was like on a CRT TV back in 1985. The blacks were deep. The greys were silvery. Here, the highlights are blown out. Also, the transitions were seamless and smooth like butter, and don't discount the quality of audio in 1985. Many people had their TVs hooked up to kick-ass stereos. Godley and Creme's Cry was powerful. Like every other MTV video and many great films and TV shows of the past, this video proved to be ephemeral. What we see here is a ghost of what was. Still, I bow.

The more "innovative" songs of 10cc tended to be from Godley & Creme. 10cc created great songs, before and after I'm Not In Love. While 10cc continued to put out some great music, they were just not quite the same after Godley & Creme departed.

Do you recall staying over at a friends house but finding it hard to sleep after everyone else was asleep? That's exactly how I saw this video. I'd just lay there and watch the videos they'd throw at you at 2am (early 2000's mtv). This video along with Michael Jackson's "Black or White" were played that same morning and I left my friends house a changed teen. This video in particular just embodies that 12am-5am feeling.
