What are the odds I just found this video after I tried finding one to see if there was a review on the glow 28 inch deep parabolic soft box. I found a couple other ones but not exactly what I was looking for. So I ordered the 28 inch Glow deep parabolic softbox and paired it up with my godox AD200 and used it for the first time today when I was taking senior portraits pand I am a firm believer of the parabolic softboxes on making nice soft soft light. I have been using a 36 inch Glow foldable beauty dish with very good results, but the parabolic takes it to a whole new level. I use a Nikon z6 and today’s session I am doing a lot less editing and I don’t have to lower the highlights down so much due to being a tad too harsh. Great video and I might pick up some mag mod accessories for my ad200.

They way they can do the price is by taking a 5$ umbrella concept and supersize ing it, and adding some clasps, some velco and better parts. Maybe cost them about $12-25$ and upsell. Thats how it works. Great video, and I wish they would snap down into the closed size like you did in the video..haha, nice1!

Since you have the b2 I'd use that, even for one ad200, over the s bracket. Just mount the bulb in the middle. The reason is because the reflective plate in there makes the ad200 more effective. More light same ad200

Parabolics really need a bare bulb to work properly. Fresnel head or speed lights are too directional for the light to collimate. In your giraffe example, you have the parabolic placed closer than the other modifier so that's not a fair comparison. Magmods are pretty cool though.

I prefer bare bulb head inside of reflectors, as the beam of the fresnel (pronounced, "fren-elle") head is around 55° so you're losing radius of light reflectance inside of the parabolic.
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 5 жыл бұрын
I actually use the reflector plate inside of the softbox so the light still has to bounce around the entire area before coming out. But I agree the bulb is probably better to use inside of modifiers! The fresnel head allows me to use magmod accessories outside of the softbox also so I find it more convenient
@alejandroma1
@alejandroma1 5 жыл бұрын
Why you don't use the bare bulb? if you use the speed light head on the parabolic the light is not to straight and loose some of the bouncing on the parabolic ? nice video hope you can explain have a good one!

Alejandro Martinez Avila I agree completely and there are good gel options that wrap around the bare bulb

You probably should use the bare bulb when using softboxes but the reflector plate in the box should bounce the light around the entire area anyway. Since I use the magmod accessories on the AD200 without the softbox so a variety of shoots also, I find I often forget about the bulb and just bring the one head.

Godox should think of some option for that ... other than the plus shaped gels available for barebulb that you have to stick with heat resistant strings .. a pain to deal with .. :( The other AD200 I have is is on another Octabox with Fresnel head and Rogue gel and it is pretty easy.

At 5:40 are you sure both softboxes are in the exact same position? When you demonstrate the Glow EZLock parabolic softbox, the edge of the softbox is visible in the top-right of the video. When you demonstrate the other 'similar size' softbox, the edge of the softbox can't be seen. If it was back further, there would definitely be less vignette on the backdrop. Without knowing that they're both in the same place, it's a tough comparison to make. Also, were you using the grid on the parabolic (as shown all the way up to 4:51)? Was there a grid on the other softbox, or just the outer diffusion material? Not trying to be nit-picky, but I'm curious if we're comparing apples to apples here or if there are too many other variables. I have the same 20" softbox and I love it, along with a Phottix 41" quick-folding softbox (which is not parabolic, but easier to use when I need a large light source in tight spaces). The Godox AD200 strobes are *awesome* and I actually have no need for the MagMod system with the new Godox round head and magnetic accessory pack. It's cool that Adorama's Flashpoint versions are exactly the same as Godox, with a better warranty and better support. I have the Flashpoint eVOLV 200 strobes which are the same as the Godox AD200. There is another cool option with the AD200 using the bare bulb (which lights very nicely and evenly inside the softbox) and gelling the bulb with one of these: flashgels.com/ I'm actually picking up spare bare-bulbs for my AD-B2 so they can stay on there (with a protective cover) and it can be ready all the time. That way I only need to attach an AD200 (or two) to the AD-B2 and not worry about digging for the bulbs. I rarely use the Fresnel head, and mainly use the bare bulb. But now that I have the round head and magnetic accessory kit, I'm torn between the two!
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 5 жыл бұрын
The light is in the same position, parabolic softbox is a bit longer and therefore comes closer to the backdrop. Principle is the same although in retrospect I probably should have moved it closer. And no the grid was not used, just outer diffusion for both. Ya I've heard great things about the round head, I just need the magmod cause I like swapping the system to my speedlights when needed. Nice I haven't seen these before! Thanks for the tip. Interesting haha I basically only use the fresnel and not the bare bulb so mine stay attached to the b2 head. Although aside from portrait studio work, I must admit that I mainly use the AD200 for bounce or with the magmod attachments. Either way, exceptional light!

I only have two softboxes, and those are the same two I use with a single AD200 and AD600 Pro. The price-to-value ratio you mentioned should be a formula behind every gear purchase. They beat the Magbox in that respect. But I like the other Magmod accessories.

Nice video. Two questions. How would you compare the MadMod system with the Godox Barn Door kit? I ask because Adorama has a twin Evolv200 bundle that includes the AD-B2 and 2 barn door kits each w/ magnetic gels and grid for $649. Second question: Have you used the Cheetah MAX 20? If so, how would you compare the EXLock 20" parabolic with the MAX 20? Thanks. Again, great review.
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would definitely say that the MagMod kit is better. Better gels and grid quality, plus the ability to stack the modifiers is a pretty great feature. That being said it is quite expensive and if I didn't also have speedlights, the cost may not be worth it for me. That kit looks pretty sweet though! As for the MAX 20 I would say it is really similiar from what I've seen on the website. I haven't tried it but I would bet that it will have very similiar output to the ezlock softbox. Hope that helps! Thanks for reaching out

Lex and Josh I usually take portrait pictures outside when the weather is nice and I’ve been using the Godox 600, now that it’s getting cold I’m struggling to sell that family portrait. I’m wondering what would I need to do it in house. I checked different material but they don’t look good. Maybe you can recommend a few good things that I could use. I do this as a part time and I want to keep on growing with this. Also thank u guys for sharing your videos. 😊👍
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 6 жыл бұрын
Alexis Hernalexis depends what type of feel you want for the images. For us we use a grey paper roll for all our studio shots because it absorbs colour really well and essentially becomes any colour we want. If you want a friendlier family vibe though maybe a wooden wall would be better? There are some that fold up to store away. Otherwise if you have some empty space in the house you can possibly dress it up for a nice portrait space with a homely feel
@alexisrosablanca6107
@alexisrosablanca6107 6 жыл бұрын
Lex and Josh thanks for replying, I never thought of using paper. Ill look into that. I saw a few options on amazon and I order a few backdrops but the quality wasn’t there. It was almost transparent. When I took the pictures the material reflected or you could see right through them. It’s my first time experimenting with backdrops.

Alexis Hernalexis yes the material matters a lot and you’ll have to pay for quality here. We use a seamless savage backdrop for our work which has served us really well so far

Is 1 AD200 enough for the larger parabolic? Do you end up using the dual set up for the larger para?
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 5 жыл бұрын
Ferenc Petho definitely depends on where you want to use the light. I would say indoors or in shade 1 is enough, in sun you will need the ad-b2 setup for sure. Smaller softbox can usually make due with 1 light although again, depends on conditions and how far the light is away from your subject

How can I gel my ad200 bare bulb?
@LexandJosh
@LexandJosh 5 жыл бұрын
Polani Almoni I’ve seen people make little cones out of gel sheets, then slot it over the bare bulb. Or you can tape a sheet over the front of the light, within the modifier you are using. I must admit though I find these methods a little impractical especially when I swap colours out so often for my shoots!

Hey Josh, check these guys out flashgels.com/. A bit pricey, but a great option for gelling those bulbs. I'm using their gels, and they're not quite as quick as magmod, but it beats trying to wrap an uncut gel sheet around those bulbs. Also, can you tell me the diameter and model on the reflector you're using on the B2 head?

Look into the Godox Round Head for the AD200. Then you can add the the round head accessories which come with gels and are also magnet. You can basically take out Magmod out of the equation and are cheaper. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp7Vkqx3rbqnY80

So, instead of just putting a piece of CTO on it using any duct tape and shooting away, you will buy a 90 dollar Magmod kit that you need to clumsily attach through the front of the softbox before you shoot...

2 x 200ws bulbs is not equal to a 400 ws bulb. It’s not straight addition. It’s closer to 1.5x total output.

Paul Tweten I think it’s even advertised from the manufacturer as having 400ws total output, I think what you mean is it’s not twice the brightness
@paultweten1472
@paultweten1472 5 жыл бұрын
Lex and Josh You said “it effectively gives you a 400watt light with a bowens mount” @ 7:00 minutes This is misleading as a 400ws light would be brighter.

Paul Tweten again I think it actually does, the company advertises that it produces an equivalent to a 400ws light
@paultweten1472
@paultweten1472 5 жыл бұрын
It does produce 400ws, but it does not produce the same output as a 400ws light. A guide number would be a better way to measure the output of the light. Here is an experiment you can do to prove my point. 1 f stop is double the light. So if your theory was correct (200ws + 200ws = 400ws) then you can take 1 of your AD200s at a set distance with with a standard reflector and set it to full power and meter it. Let's say you get f8. If you were correct you can add a second AD200 at the same distance using the same reflector and you should get F11. This is 1 fstop, or double the light output. Chances are you will get f9 or f10 (less than double). Check out this interesting read on it. photo.stackexchange.com/questions/16320/does-adding-additional-strobes-cumulatively-add-to-the-flash-power @@LexandJosh

Paul Tweten read through the article, I still don’t see a difference between adding a second 200ws light or using a 400ws light. They would both result in the same output according to the equations in the article

Parabolic softbox is Just a Marketing Gag. Watch this First: kzbin.info/www/bejne/on6YfnhqpJxsmKc If you put Diffusion Material in it, a parabolic softbox act Like a normal softbox (law of physics). Without Diffusion Material it is Just a deep softbox and the parabolic Form maybe is also irrelevant. Like a deep softbox without Diffusion material it collimates light. The Advantages of the parabolic form can only be used when the light shines inside the "softbox" (acting as a reflector) and when the light is movable along the symmetry axis (and of course without any Diffusion Material). Then it collimates light and is able to focuse it Like a fresnel lens
