ND filters don't really get a lot of love from me, but recently I needed to use one with my Godox AD200 Pro and I loved the results! In today's video I go over why I needed it, how I organized this shoot, and how I edited the shot. Hope you like it! =)

Another excellent and informative video. Thank you. With regards to using ND filters, or any circular filters for that matter, instead of buying one for each lens, just buy one for the size for your largest lens and then buy step up rings for your smaller lenses. These allow all different sized lenses to attach to the filter. They only cost a couple of dollars each too!

a tip about using ND filters: get one ND filter kit for the biggest size lens you have, and then just get adapter rings so you can use the same ND filter on lenses with smaller diameter. super simple and super cheap way to go about it.

Great video as usual brother. I actually prefer ND filters over high speed sync. I know it's a preference thing. When I was using Einsteins in the past, it was the best option available. I eventually went to the Flashpoint/godox lights a couple of years ago, and I I would find myself reverting back to ND Filters often. Your flash doesn't get taxed a hard. Love the breakthrough filters.

I always enjoy your videos, thanks! Not totally related, but maybe you'll have an idea: How does Irene achieve such beautiful (almost flash like...) results with only natural light? What's the secret?
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 5 жыл бұрын
EagleXL one thing I admire about photographers who use natural light a lot is their ability to read and predict great lighting. Having an eye for that really helps in the end result but of course Irene is a master of her craft too with posing, getting great expressions, and keeping the shoot very natural (not posed). It's something you need to practice to develop. I'm working on getting better at natural light myself.

Hey buddy, great video! I have a question. By using an ND filter aren't you essentially reducing the power of the flash, like when using high speed sync? Say your flash is at full power, then you slap an ND filter on. The image will be underexposed, no? That's what I mean about an ND filter reducing flash power too. I don't understand when you said high speed sync cuts down the power of the flash but ND filters don't @ 2:15. I understand in a physical sense they don't, but in the end it's the same effect, isn't it? In the end both high speed sync and ND filters are both limiting the amount of light from the flash entering the sensor. Just two different methods of doing so. Am I missing something?
@fjhphoto
@fjhphoto 5 жыл бұрын
There's more to the story. HSS is literally cutting down the power in order to work. ND filters are basically sunglasses for your lens. It's not affecting the power of the light at all.Imagine a flashlight shining on something and then you put on sunglasses. Did you lower the flashlight? No, you just reduced the exposure of the whole scene. HSS is like putting on sunglasses and also reducing the output of the flashlight. I regret not going over this more in the video so thanks for commenting.

Love the shot! I was just wondering, what is the reason you mostly go for pre posed static portrait shots? You shoot with a camera with a constant eye auto focus option no? So you have the possibility to for the model to move, and still have the eyes in focus.
