Note: The Neewer Q300 does not have HSS or TTL. I do not use HSS much and never use TTL (I always shoot manual for full control). Remember HSS cuts flash power in half, drains your batteries much faster and can cause horizontal lines in the image when used with cameras like a Sony A7C and any camera using Electronic Front Curtain Shutter (EFCS) which can cause banding issues with HSS. If you do want HSS and TTL with a powerful but inexpensive flash, then I suggest the Neewer Q4 400ws It's available at this moment for $336 WITH a flash trigger! You can't beat that for value and power, plus it's Bowens mount amzn.to/40v8B3D and with a Leftfoto 7" reflector, it's just as bright as a Godox AD600!

How fun was this video to make?! :D It was certainly fun to watch. This is practical knowledge everyone needs to have, especially beginners. Advertising creates an air of superiority for some brands. What I noticed a long time ago was that light was light and if you knew how to use it, you could get amazing results with ANY light no matter the brand or cost. You certainly have proved that through numerous videos and, you use of hard light is nothing short of astonishing. Always entertaining and useful material. Thanks Markus.

Nice tests as always! But let’s get practical: The AD300 isn’t just brighter with the SMDV softbox; it also fills the front diffuser more effectively, resulting in softer light. The same goes for the AD200. There’s a specific SMDV adapter for the AD200 bare bulb, which requires a firm push-sometimes involving a bit of rubber tearing-to fully fit and properly illuminate the softbox. Without a softbox, the AD100 performs excellently, and I often use four of them as ambient fills indoors and for accents or FX. In fact, for indoor shots, AD100s/V1 are my main tools. I even use two V350s as accent lights indoors because they’re so lightweight, and two MF12s as rim lights. Outdoors, though, I’m a bit skeptical. For me, outdoor lighting usually starts at the AD200 level since I need a softbox as a key light outside. SMDV softboxes are optimized for the AD100, but if I want to use a different softbox, the AD100 isn’t quite suitable. I often use the AD100 with a 120cm white umbrella indoors, but that setup isn’t realistic outdoors-the umbrella would likely break. Indoors, you can even bounce light off the ceiling for a key light, but unfortunately, there’s no ceiling outdoors. And I’ll say this again: the AD300’s default reflector is more of a bulb protector, so running power tests with it isn’t entirely fair. As for Profoto... well, it’s just not worth the money for me. But the Magnum clic reflector/fresnel are cool, and I wish Godox offered a similar, more affordable options. SMDV reflectors require an adapter, so they end up being a bit too clunky for my setup. And thank you for highlighting the value of Neewer lights!
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
The SMDV is double diffusion. Here are several shoots I did with AD100 in softboxes outdoors kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6nae4WleZeoZ7c kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIfKXoqPgtGkjc0 but of course they were full power, but it is possible.
@bn5fgАй бұрын
@@MarkusPix SMDV is more than just a double-diffusion softbox; it features a thoughtfully designed inner diffuser placement with large gaps on the outer ring, which helps balance the hotspot created by the AD100's fresnel head. However, a central hotspot still becomes easily visible at f/22. This can be somewhat mitigated with an AK-R11 dome, but it costs about a stop of light. When using the AD200 and AD300 with the SMDV softbox, you can achieve bright edges and a soft center, resulting in overall softer light and more gradual shadow terminators. You might call me a light snob, but I can definitely spot the difference! With the Godox S85/120T, the AD300 provides a perfectly illuminated front diffuser(so I think, we can get fewer highlights compared to the SMDV with the AD300, which creates a bright-edge, beauty-dish-like effect.). However, these things are heavier compared to SMDV. Not so portable and much slower to set up.

I would shoot into the alienbees plm silver, which turns it into a 8ft diameter parallel beam. And then would get pictures of cranes hunting in swamp land. I would trigger them from about 30 feet away, so we were both shooting the target, and I was not shooting through all of the illuminated particles along the way. The plm allowed me to get about the same focus as a 300mm lens. It was powered by a car battery and an inverter.

Out of curiosity, I took out my ad100 and ad300 for testing too. I set my camera to manual and both flashes to maximum power. I faced both flashes towards the ceiling. I then intentionally set my camera settings for an underexposed base shot then took test shots of the entire room with each flash. The ad300 being a more powerful flash always lit the entire room to the point of overexposure whereas the ad100 just looked properly exposed. I did this several times with similar results. I think therefore the ad300 in my opinion is a stronger flash than the ad100.

I made a video about it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnPRlpqDm72Jq6M The Bolt VB22 is just a rebrander AD360, exactly the same but version 1- it does not have a 2.4Ghz receiver like the version II so you'd have to attach a Godox X1R receiver to it. Thank you for this helpful video Markus! After 20 years shooting with various Elinchroms (which I still love) I am hunting for small size battery flashes because some jibs are simple & fast and I am becoming lazy to carry heads + battery unit + cables. And I am not willing to pay extra money for the brand anymore - so after I gave enough time to Chinese factories to learn (and they really did) I am open now to step out of my habits :) AD 100 seems to be amazing - but what I miss in your battery flashes comparison is the battery capacity - and this info would be extra helpful. How many shots in full power gives you AD 100 and Q4? Especialy AD 100 size means small battery :) Can you shoot with AD100 while it is charging? Can you feed it from extra power bank? Are their batteries replacable when they degrade too much? Many thanx again, you do great job 👏👏👏

It is difficult to recommend anything else than AD100 for beginners and anyone who needs to be on mobile. If going for softboxes in studio, gamefield is different. But AD100 hits well above price, size, weight and power it is challenged for. Well done Godox. I have AD200's and now wondering should I upgrade to the "Pro II" model that would have the LED modeling light with bulb head. As sometimes in studio it is very nice to be able get the better idea how to position the flash without taking few test shots first. But it really is not so big deal as I do not shoot anymore film or polaroids and waste money and time via that way. The AD200 works great when you need those softboxes and need to be mobile. So pairing AD100 and AD200 is really something. I have in storage a old large format flashes. It has power pack that can power three flashes, but all at same power, so no individual channel/cable control. But you do that with moving lights distance. But unusable as they are too powerful. I needed f/32 and 2 stops ND filter to get a acceptable exposure for face from 1 meter distance of the subject to the softbox surface (1 meter diameter) when the power was for one flash and at minimum. The power can be adjusted only in nine levels, and IIRC is 3 stops between lowest and highest, so 1/3 stops per click (it has big black knob to select from 1 to 9). But oh boy were those nice when doing large group photo shoots, like a 200 people in the frame. All three flashes evenly distributed to front of the people in that 20-25 meter wide group and.... Didn't need anything else. That is the reason I hang on those even today, even when I don't ever need those anymore.

Hey Markus, very informative video as always. Saving us from overspending. Do you have any insights in how these flashes compare in regards to firing off multiple shots in quick succesion. Let's say you have to shoot multiple people very quickly right after one another. Or if you have to react quick while shooting events. The generally cheaper or older equipment I've used so far often lets me down by not firing consistantly after one or two shots.

You need to watch more of my videos. I've done numerous videos about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4qlkGeCjs2YsNU and kzbin.info/www/bejne/gme5oaKPoauikLc

Are you going to review the new Panasonic camcorders?

You mean the VX3? No diff than VX1 except some software to enhance low light shots on that tiny 1/2.5 sensor

as someone who likes to hike or beach to photograph i never take my ad300s unless i absolutely know im going to use them. they are too heavy and take up too much space. but seeing how the ad100 outperform them. i might have to re evaluate and get some of them in place of my ad300s.

Markus, give the Godox AD-R11 7" reflector and diffuser a try for the AD300 Pro... light quality is already better or same without diffuser than AD-R14 with diffuser... and brighter
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
Yeah the 14 doesn't do much
@Walter_KircherАй бұрын
@@MarkusPix I found and went for this AD-R11 because of your AD300 clip with the custom refelctor... it is same with native Godox mount... not available in Europe and US... so Ali sent me two plus the diffusers from Ad600. 🙏 Dankeschön!

is there a difference in these in recycle times? I tend to shoot rapidly and many flashes can't keep up with me even when not used at full power.
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
I don't notice much difference.

One more plus for AD200: I have a running "habit" of falling down lightstands due to wind or overlook, yet no flash has been harmed - "horned" protectors make AD200s jump and hop around on pavements or asphalt like cute balls. No light was damaged this way so far. No other light mentioned here seems to have similar silicone attachments, so I would probably need to replace them almost instantly. Edit: there are bumpers for XPLOR 100 and 300, which are rebrands of AD100 and AD300 respectively, I highly recommend them for outdoor shooters with a bit too much spontaneity for their gear to handle.

Always weight them down when outside kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqubaol_graNers

Some of those flashes look like they’re using cob leds. How are you finding the transition from bulbs like the ad200 to the new led versions. Better battery life, more power, color temperature, flicker?
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
I hate the new ones. Nothing beats the original bare bulb

Hi Markus, have you seen the new panasonic 4k camcorder hc-vx3 ? If yes, are you gonna review him ? Big shout out from France !
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
Doesn't look like it's much different than the VX1 (which I don't like). They say it's supposed to have better low light capabilities, but with a tiny 1/2.5" sensor, I would guess its just software enhancement. I'm definitely not running out to get one

does Godox trigger work with combination of lights (Ad400 + Q300) type lighting
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
Godox only works with Godox, not Neewer.

what are you thoughts with 2 AD200's in the AD-B2? One of the reasons I picked 2 Ad200's over the AD400 was the versatility though its kinda awkward with everything mounted up there.
@MarkusPixАй бұрын
Not a big fan of the ADB2. I have it but never use it. The weight of the ADB2 and two AD200s together is pretty hefty, might as well get a 400 or 600. One 200 is actually pretty good by itself in a modifier even in bright sunlight kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZappWh8oLyLnLc If I use 2 AD100s, I would much rather split them up from different directions using ADS2, filling in shadows and giving same output as AD600 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gme5oaKPoauikLc
