The frame rate always bewildered me though. It looks like it's running at 20-25 FPS and has a cap on that. As far as I can see it's not doing anything too taxing graphics wise as the sprites aren't large and there's not much happening on screen. There's no music either, so I don't see any reason why it couldn't have run at 50FPs.

In terms of gameplay it's archaic next to other games from 1991. Super Mario World and Sonic were out that year. Gods doesn't stack up.
@saporob4 жыл бұрын
@@Jamesharveycomics To be honest It was archaic even for a 1980 game. It had nice graphics and a nice atmosphere, that's all. Dull controls, over complicated puzzles and a terrible framerate made it a mediocre game. The best BP game was Speedball 2(a truly masterpiece at the time) they should have invested more in that title in the past.
@mattx54993 жыл бұрын
@@saporob Chaos Engine was another awesome game from Bitmap Brothers. It was one of the best multidirectional shooters along with Alien Breed series from Team 17. Gods was a decent game praised for the atmosphere/graphics/music rather than the gameplay which was kind of clunky compared to other similar games for the Amiga. I prefered titles like Yo Joe, Traps N' Treasures and Ruff N' Tumble. More dynamic gameplay and also nice graphics and sound.

In answer to your question on the 4 slotted 3 item inventory, posed in the description-linked blog review: It is rather elegant and actually allows usage of 4 items. E. g., it is possible to sneak an invulnerability potion into world 4-3. Successively store the alchemist tools on the fourth step on that stairway below his lair. The trapdoor key needed to access the lab spawns when all three tools are held while being on that step. Sitting is okay. While sitting, 4 items may be held, allowing for all three tools, while not having to drop the potion. This is useful in a number of points in the game.

"I was initially given a brief covering what Gods was about, but after that was given complete free rein as to how the game could look. The main influence for the graphic style was Greek mythology, but then as the design progressed, more mechanical aspects came in - pretty much whatever came into my imagination made it into the game! I occasionally tended to drift from the core theme but it didn't seem to matter too much. During development I was working back in Wales and the Bitmaps were in London - this was way before the Internet so loads of floppy disks were posted back and forth during the making of Gods." -- Mark Coleman, graphic artist "The philosophy of The Bitmap Brothers was always: great music, great programming, great graphics and great sound. Not one thing makes a great game, it's all these together. Working with Nation 12 on the music for Gods was great - John Foxx nailed it instantly after he saw the game running and the music he created suited it perfectly. Greek mythology was a big part of Gods when we first started and the artwork that Mark created was great - he had so much scope to express himself and that really does show. If we'd ever made a sequel to Gods, it would have definitely have been like Gods of War, which strangely enough was made by a programmer I'd tried to employ years ago!" -- Mike Montgomery, co-designer (Gods, Amiga)

6 years later... the trick is seeing that the skull cannot be harmed. The boss only loses HP when the worm is killed. If you arrive there with 4 or 5 extra lives it is even possible to just stand on the right edge of the large platform, never moving, merely spamming axes. The fireballs from the eye sockets will cost you some lives, but the boss will be defeated.

Switch flipping hell! Flip a switch, it does something, but you have no idea what. Flip it again, maybe it will do something different. Hey, there's a switch that I've already flipped about a dozen times, but now that I've finished another part of the level, maybe it will do something different if I flip it another dozen times! Maybe it's just me, but I like games to have a clear cause & effect relationship for the things that you do in the game. Make the puzzles about figuring out which switches you need to flip in which order, not "Does this switch do anything if I flip it five times?" Don't get me wrong, the graphics, sound and gameplay are all great (although more variety in the levels would have been nice), but the endless switch flipping killed any appeal that this game had for me.

@@lurkerrekrul The switches seem to work pretty smartly to me: Sometimes they simply open a door next to you, sometimes they activate some monsters next to you, and sometimes you have to switch a couple in order or both on/off at the same time to deactivate a trap or whatever--at least based on a quick play of the first level--which all totally makes sense, adds a little bit of a very light "puzzle" element, and isn't frustrating at all. Not really sure what your complaint is to be honest.

@inceptional 3:36 - Flip the switch to destroy the spike pole, flip it again at 5:00 and nothing happens, flip it again at 5:08 after picking up the key and a block moves. And what combination of switches allows you to get that gem that's under the platform? I seem to recall seeing some video that showed how to get it by flipping a bunch of switches. 3:50 - Flip the switch, a monster appears, walk to the left and flip the switches, one makes a monster appear, the other blows up the spike pole, walk back to the right and flip the switch again to make a key appear. Walk back to the left, flip the switches again to make a gem appear. 6:13 - Flip the switch and nothing apparent happens. Return to the switch at 7:31 and flip it again and it does...? The hatch seems to open before the switch, so what's it do? 8:38 - Switch appears to do nothing. 9:33 - Switch appears to do nothing. And so on...
