Jeff shares his thoughts about the second volume of the massive Gods of the Forbidden North old school fantasy adventure campaign from Pulp Hummock Press. The tale is designed for use with Old-School Essentials Advanced Fantasy but can easily be used with nearly any OSR retroclone. The 530 page hardcover (with PDF) is available at DriveThruRPG for $69.99 or grab just the PDF for $24.99.

Backed Volume 3, and I'm excited to bring it to my table. It's one of the few campaigns of this scale that offer both a sandbox AND a central adventure "spine". I really appreciate the care that Rob brought to make it ready for virtual delivery. Thanks Jeff!

I've been playing D&D since 1981 and this might be the most impressive product I've ever seen with its combination of depth, options, and originality. I originally bought volume 1 POD, but when he offered a premium option, I flipped that copy and upgraded for the premium books. So we created a party and ran through preliminary adventures last spring and once my premium books come at the end of this month, we're diving full bore into the campaign.

I like the amount of content being beyond what might be found in a more OSR-styled adventure, as it provides the luxury of ignoring or removing what doesn't work for us. That, and I think OSR-styled adventures that shoot for that minimalist approach are low-effort. Happy to see that this doesn't look like it could've been generated by AI, and that the artwork within has some truly excellent pieces. The quality and sheer number of maps are a relief, too, as I still haven't gotten the knack for cartography, and my groups all somewhat rely upon visual aids.

Got the new DnD Dungeon Master guide, mostly for the Venger cover, and couldn't get motivated to read it. This looks great though, I'll have to dig in.

It's definitely a bit verbose at times, probably because Rob is a professor of creative writing and indulges himself at times:). That being said, I'm not a huge fan of the OSE bullet-point style, which I sometimes find harder to run than modules in the traditional TSR style.

I think there's a typo in the description where you state this book costs $70. Seventy. For a book. A BOOK. There is no satisfactory justification for such a ludicrous price.
@Thegaminggang
@Thegaminggang Күн бұрын
Nope. Not a typo. Take a look at the upcoming releases from WotC and Paizo Inc and you'll see the same sort of pricing for 250-300 page books. At least, you're getting over 500 pages with this volume. You better strap yourself in because I can guarantee higher prices than those come 2026. ~ Jeff

The Kickstarter for the Volume 3 is out still 25 days left can get the Print on Depand for all three volumes for 99 dollars plus the at cost print price from drivethru or get the three volume offset prints and slip case for 179 dollars plus shipping (that is pretty low) I live in Ireland backed the last KS and the new one. There is also a 269 dollar price for all of what comes with the 179 dollar price teir plus losts of extra stuff PDFs come with everything including digital art, maps etc... the PDF only teir is 59 bucks. I have Volume 1 and 2 offset prints are on the way and I can say it is more than worth it, single greatest gaming product I have ever had years... of content.

Not sure what planet you live on, but books routinely cost more than that, especially in the academic world, where paperbacks less than half this length might run you $150. And it's the same in the gaming world. The five volume Arden Vul set runs around $275 in hard copy and that came out in 2020 and is shorter in page count than this.

@@sunsin1592 I laughed when you pointed out this is more pages than Arden Vul. I’ve enjoyed watching play-through videos of Arden Vul on the YT channel “3d6 down the line”, they’ve been consistently running a campaign and uploading their sessions for two years, with no end in sight. It would be fitting were they to adopt “Gods of the Forbidden North” as their next game, should they ever be finished with The Halls of Arden Vul.
