Not really. "Many people think the band's name stemmed from Alice in Chains song, but according to Erna, the band's name came from a small and personal incident. "I was making fun of somebody who had a cold sore on his lip and the next day I had one myself and somebody said, 'It's a godsmack.' The name stuck. We were aware of the Alice In Chains song but didn't really think much about it." Cited on Wiki and here. web.archive.org/web/20071011092214/nyrock.com/interviews/1999/godsmack_int.asp

It’s Led Zepplin’s Moby Dick. They do this nightly on tour. It’s one of the main reasons that other bands that godsmack have opened for start to talk smack about them.. because they steal the show! Sully is a phenomenal front man and the drum battle kills it! Sully has a crazy work ethic and although godsmack was not the first rock band to do this, it was sully who decided to start it up along with the pyro and lights. He said the showmanship had been missing thru the 90s with all the “grunge” band where people paid hard earned $$ to go watch guys on a stage play instruments.. no great light show, pyros, etc. he wants to make sure people get their $$s worth

The story, overly simplified, is that Sully is the singer of Godsmack, and he used to be a drummer back in the day, and then some shit went sour with his former band, who actually HAD a record deal, and he was like, "screw this, I'm going to do my own thing where I'M the singer." And everyone basically laughed at him and were like, "dude you can't sing for shit!" And he set out to prove them wrong basically, and the rest, as they say, is history. Edit: Also I'm Big Impressed that George picked up on the Korn thing. It also sounds kinda similar to the song off their most recent album When Legends Rise too. Check it out! In my opinion, it's the best album Godsmack has ever done, and they've been around for 20+ years.

So the drum battle starts out of the end of the song "Voodoo" from their first album. The drum rhythm there is very distinctive and returns in "Voodoo Too" on a later album. The background riffs for the second part after the bongo section is the opening riff to "Get Up, Get Out!" also from their first album. I've seen these guys so many times before and they put on an amazing show every time. Probably in my top 5 bands to see live. I've had the distinct privilege of seeing this live. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! One of the best live performances I have EVER seen! I never realized what a multi talent Master Sully was until I saw these guys live

When I saw them with Metallica, Sully lit his cymbols on fire and played.

Great job guys. Shannon is the full time drummer. Sully is the lead singer, who can also play drums. He is the one playing the bongos in the beginning. The bulk of the first part is from their song Get Up, Get Out. At the end, it was YYZ - Rush, Walk This Way - Aerosmith, Moby Dick - Led Zeppelin, Tom Sawyer- Rush.

I saw this drum battle maybe, 20 years ago at a Godsmack show and it blew the roof off the place. These guys have just been escalating their duels and the fans are absolutely benefiting and I love Godsmack for doing everything they can to make the fans happy

they did this for a few years, changing it up every once in awhile. I saw them I think it in '13, and they actually threw the sticks to each other almost like juggling. Also, in the middle was Zeppelin, but the name slips me right now, I'll edit when I remember, lol

Saw them last year in Milwaukee, they're still doing it and it's so good live.

Godsmack concerts are epic, especially when your front row and the drum battle is epic live.

I'm so glad you guys liked this. Godsmack does this EVERY show. It varies a bit from tour to tour, but you'll always get this level of showmanship from them. The song at the start was Awake, and they basically roll from the standard performance of that into the drum battle you saw. Up to YYZ all the riffs you hesrd were taken from other Godsmack songs. If you want to check out more of them, my personal favorites are: Whatever, Voodoo, and Awake. Keep on keeping it real.

The riff you guys are loving is from the Godsmack song Get Up, Get Out! You should react to that!

Saw James & Lars do this when Metallica toured by themselves circa 92-93. Lars was in the middle of his drum solo and then another drum kit rose up from under the stage with James on it; drum battle ensued.

Remy R I also saw that tour at Nassau Collisium in NY. Blew me away cause at the time I had no idea James played drums. Lol Same drum battle your talking about

I was a passive Godsmack fan until I saw them live summer 2018 and THEY BLEW ME AWAY with their live performance. It was epic! They did the same kind of drum showcase and it was incredible.

Sully was originally a drummer. He did record the drums on the first Godsmack album. The drum off has always been a big part of the show.

When I saw Godsmack the first time, they were so well rehearsed. They were focused on performing. They are quite simply the top live band ever in my opinion. Though, I haven't seen every band, but Godsmack beats Metallica and Metallica is also top shelf live.

As for a lot of "purists" hating Godsmack, I feel like a lot of people do and I think it's pretty unfair. I'm assuming the hate is due to one or a combo of two things. A lot of their songs do sound the same, so not a ton of variation in their music and some can get bored by that, but they are very capable musicians that can do a variety of things. Check out their accoustic "The Other Side" album, along with Sully Urna's solo album "The Avalon" (one of my favorites!), both of those albums offer a different side to these guys, though only the first one features the full band. The only other reason I can see anyone not liking these guys is that they are pretty mainstream and that turns off a lot of hipsters out there, which is ridiculous. Good music is good music, but I will concede that the radio did play out a few of their songs, I agree with that.

If you guys are going to do this, you have to see Eddie vanhalen’s guitar solo from “live without a net” it is possibly the best live guitar solo on video.
