Even as a TooL fan since the late 90s I find Schism to be an acquired taste. It's a very unique song in their catalogue that's very much in their style but one that goes from being soft to sharp to heavy and back again. It's up there in terms of some their best overall quality of composition and the thoughtfulness in the lyrics left an impression on me for sure. Glad you guys took to the time to listen to it. You're under no obligation to love it but it's a great marker for the type of band TooL is, willing to experiment while still maintaining a coherence of rhythm and melody.

I'm not a music theory pro, but I can explain the groove to most of this song. 1-2-3-4-5.1-2.1-2.1-2-3. Alternating measures of 5/8 and 7/8. Once you learn it, it's hard to not catch it... But I'm weird and love music where I have to think about the groove lol.

Rick Beato did a fantastic breakdown of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZS1eGdmlJytmJI
@alispie5 жыл бұрын
@Terry Beaton Technically, yes. It's more a matter of feel though. It doesn't play like 12/8. It feels like alternating measures of 7/8. That's why this song is considered to have like 50 time signature changes lol. The Rick Beato video mentioned is a great breakdown. Just a great channel in general honestly, love that guy's content. He actually addresses why he doesn't consider it 12/8 and it's basically what I just said.
@mangyangghos4 жыл бұрын
I always felt like the dueling time signatures on this song represented the people in the argument. The majority of the song bounces 5/8 to 7/8 and back, like two lovers fighting, even over time signature.

That riff is one of the coolest bass guitar lines ever
@tinman246115 жыл бұрын
I think his lack of finding a groove is because he's looking in the wrong place. The groove is set by the bass throughout with the drums and guitar playing in all directions on top. He's used to a drum beat groove and the off time drumming is throwing him. Needs to tap his feet to the bass line and he'll feel the groove. What always attracted me to tool was the bass guitar how it's used and the complexity they allow him to perform, rather than just play the root notes for the guitar or lock into the drum for the rhythm. Of course as a former bassist I'm biased but I think even non musician types can appreciate how everyone gets to be free and expressive in tool and showcase the mastery of their instruments.

I'm a drummer and the whole song is a pain in the neck to cover it, but I understand the complexity of the rest of the instruments as well (specially bass in this one) the timing and how it changes to a different one and then back, only 30 seconds into the song and you know every one of them is at the top of their own weapon of choice hahaha Idk if I said it right 'cause english is not my first language but you get the idea I guess.

I literally have no idea who the hell is suggesting these song choices. No real Tool fan would suggest Schism to someone that's only listened to a few Tool songs. This should have been The Grudge, Vicarious, Right in Two, Jambi, Sober to name a few. I'd have even suggested Ticks and Leeches as it's something amazing from them and a departure from their normal material. These are all far more accessible (Jambi might take a few listens to get the structure) and are far better choices for someone that's fairly new to their music. I struggled to understand the choice of Aenima in the first round, and I'm really struggling to understand the choice of Schism here. Overall, I'd have said The Grudge should have been the choice for the first round, and then Vicarious in the second. One thing I think sadly people new to Tool would miss out on now is the way their official website was originally laid out with all the easter egg pages hidden all over the place and the old IRC style chat room they once housed. John Dorsey that’s true, and even though Hunger Strike is my own personal favorite, I understand why Say Hello 2 Heaven would be some people’s first choice. In fact I don’t think it’s a stretch to include Reach Down In there with what you said about Say Hello 2 Heaven and Times Of Trouble. But I personally think Hunger Strike is a lot catchier, and the back-and-forth between Chris and Eddie has a great balance. To me it’s a good display of a great vocal tag team, you know? And not only that, I also just think it’s a better song to begin with. When it comes to hearing/reacting to a song for the first time, I think Hunger Strike is more of an entry level song, whereas Say Hello 2 Heaven I think it’s better suited to work up to, or build up to. I feel like Say Hello 2 Heaven would be more effective if you lead up to it, rather than just jumping right in with that song. You can savor it a little bit more, if that makes sense. Think of it as desert. And a song like Hunger Strike is part of the meal before dessert. Even though I’m someone would prefers that meal a little bit more than that dessert because of my own taste I know that most others would likely like that dessert the most.
