I like the tournament format but might suggest doing within-band rather than between-band tournaments. So maybe take the top 4 fan suggested songs from a band and pit them against each other. That way you get to delve a bit more into a band’s work and judge songs on a more level field.

I love how George is becoming the Prog/complex rhythms guy, whereas Ryan's more the 4/4, groovy, chuggy guy. Both are awesome viewpoints, and give a great contrast of opinions. Also, I feel like after hearing a lot of these different rhythms, one day Meshuggah's gonna just click for George & instantly become one of his favorite bands. That's usually how it goes for most Meshuggah fans. It's an acquired taste, one day you just get it.

That's how it should be done too I think. Especially with prog metal too, it is way too hard to try to fit instrumentation over pre-written lyrics, this way Maynard can shape when he is gonna sing based on the time sig.

Even as a TooL fan since the late 90s I find Schism to be an acquired taste. It's a very unique song in their catalogue that's very much in their style but one that goes from being soft to sharp to heavy and back again. It's up there in terms of some their best overall quality of composition and the thoughtfulness in the lyrics left an impression on me for sure. Glad you guys took to the time to listen to it. You're under no obligation to love it but it's a great marker for the type of band TooL is, willing to experiment while still maintaining a coherence of rhythm and melody.

Been a Tool fan for many long years as well, and I'm in the same boat. The big centerpieces on Lateralus jump out at you, but Schism is one of those songs that sneaks up on you. I don't rank songs, but if I were to do so, my rankings would have changed drastically over the years. The older I get, the more resonant the lyrics on songs like Schism get.

Schism had to grow on me and now I think it’s one of their best. Some songs are just like that for some people. Sometimes I think those are the best, most long lasting songs. Some quick hip beat or groove you like right away might get old and stale real fast. But going back to a song you didn’t overplay and then find new things you like about it that you didn’t really give it time to before is awesome🖤

I'm not a music theory pro, but I can explain the groove to most of this song. 1-2-3-4-5.1-2.1-2.1-2-3. Alternating measures of 5/8 and 7/8. Once you learn it, it's hard to not catch it... But I'm weird and love music where I have to think about the groove lol.

@Terry Beaton Technically, yes. It's more a matter of feel though. It doesn't play like 12/8. It feels like alternating measures of 7/8. That's why this song is considered to have like 50 time signature changes lol. The Rick Beato video mentioned is a great breakdown. Just a great channel in general honestly, love that guy's content. He actually addresses why he doesn't consider it 12/8 and it's basically what I just said.

I think his lack of finding a groove is because he's looking in the wrong place. The groove is set by the bass throughout with the drums and guitar playing in all directions on top. He's used to a drum beat groove and the off time drumming is throwing him. Needs to tap his feet to the bass line and he'll feel the groove. What always attracted me to tool was the bass guitar how it's used and the complexity they allow him to perform, rather than just play the root notes for the guitar or lock into the drum for the rhythm. Of course as a former bassist I'm biased but I think even non musician types can appreciate how everyone gets to be free and expressive in tool and showcase the mastery of their instruments.

The point of the song is to be dissonant in its harmonies and rhythms, of which the time signature shifts between 5/8 and 7/8, but together meshes into an easier 12/8 harmony. In many ways it exemplifies the theme of this channel, that there’s beauty in discomfort and to challenge what you think.

I literally have no idea who the hell is suggesting these song choices. No real Tool fan would suggest Schism to someone that's only listened to a few Tool songs. This should have been The Grudge, Vicarious, Right in Two, Jambi, Sober to name a few. I'd have even suggested Ticks and Leeches as it's something amazing from them and a departure from their normal material. These are all far more accessible (Jambi might take a few listens to get the structure) and are far better choices for someone that's fairly new to their music. I struggled to understand the choice of Aenima in the first round, and I'm really struggling to understand the choice of Schism here. Overall, I'd have said The Grudge should have been the choice for the first round, and then Vicarious in the second. Hard-hitting lyrics, fantastic musicianship, and they're great songs to bang your head to. Aenima and Schism, just lol!

This is a very tough song by tool on drums. Danny Carey is one of the best drummers ever. I have the drum tab to this song, and it's hard. It bounces back and forth from 5/8 to 7/8.

Denature69 you just have to accept the fact you’re always left with an odd amount with these guys. That’s the hardest part about playing their stuff. There is always a tendency to try to normalize.

Ryan, appreciate your honest opinion. But I'm also happy you'll listen to it more than once before you finalize your opinion. Being a Tool fan, the Aenima album and Lateralus album have entirely different feels. I remember after waiting forever for Lateralus to be released, the very first listen, I felt the same way you did here. But given time, it is hands down one of the most amazing albums. I feel it needs to be listened to as a whole and not picked apart though to get the full experience.

Couldn’t agree more, Aenima was and still is one of my favorite all time albums...first couple listens of Lateralus I was completely disappointed and didn’t listen to it again for months after the release and one day just put it on and it grabbed me and now I love it.

The guy on the left's opinions remind me a lot of my own back when I first listened to Tool in high school. It's definitely completely different than anything mainstream, however it's grown a lot on me over the years and I recognize now how amazing and creative it is... Hope that isn't too corny. haha

not corny I totally feel you. Took me way too long to get into Tool but when I did....holy shit there's really nothing like it. Now I envy people who have yet to have that journey from no Tool in their life to full appreciation. Ok now that was corny, Cheers!

I've always been able to admire the unique approach they have to the genre for sure, there really is noone that sounds like them, but I've never fallen in love with them because their music never manages to truly grab me. There's the odd cool riff here or there, and I end up liking every track I hear, but they're never quite as engaging as I wish they'd be.

One thing I think sadly people new to Tool would miss out on now is the way their official website was originally laid out with all the easter egg pages hidden all over the place and the old IRC style chat room they once housed. And also of course Kabir's old fan site that had a pretty robust message board as well as the FAQ. It was a fantastic time when only a handful of bands were really taking advantage of the web and creating a true extension of their art on it.

I understand Ryan so much. For practically every song from Tool I needed several listens before I found the way to it but they all got me in the end. Jambi is the best example, it felt a little weird to me the first time, now I consider it as one of the most important songs to me ever.

You should totally check out Rick Beato's musical analysis and breakdown of this song. There's a reason you can't groove to it, and that's because there are constantly shifting time signatures and just a whole lot going on musically here that isn't "natural". This is one of my favorites from Tool, and I definitely consider it Tool at their most creative and progessive. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZS1eGdmlJytmJI

It may not be "easy" to listen to Tool at first. But a lot of things that are not easy are worth it at he end. The first song I heard around 2000 was "Eulogy". Bought the album for the song and really needed a few weeks to discover it. But once you "get it", there's no way back. It is since then my favorite band, best live show I've ever seen, big influence in drumming. Just amazing.

John Dorsey that’s true, and even though Hunger Strike is my own personal favorite, I understand why Say Hello 2 Heaven would be some people’s first choice. In fact I don’t think it’s a stretch to include Reach Down In there with what you said about Say Hello 2 Heaven and Times Of Trouble. But I personally think Hunger Strike is a lot catchier, and the back-and-forth between Chris and Eddie has a great balance. To me it’s a good display of a great vocal tag team, you know? And not only that, I also just think it’s a better song to begin with. When it comes to hearing/reacting to a song for the first time, I think Hunger Strike is more of an entry level song, whereas Say Hello 2 Heaven I think it’s better suited to work up to, or build up to. I feel like Say Hello 2 Heaven would be more effective if you lead up to it, rather than just jumping right in with that song. You can savor it a little bit more, if that makes sense. Think of it as desert. And a song like Hunger Strike is part of the meal before dessert. Even though I’m someone would prefers that meal a little bit more than that dessert because of my own taste I know that most others would likely like that dessert the most.

The groove of Shcism is incredibly complex and constantly shifting. It constantly keeps you shifting and changing as you try to follow it. It demonstrates the beauty that can be found in a form of rhythmic dissonance. It's one of my favourite Tool songs.

This song goes through the same musical journey that the lyrics talk about. It starts off nice & smooth and continues to become louder, harder, & more raw & vicious, just like the relationship he's singing about. My favorite part is the final attempt at something smooth and nice as it has small outbursts of rage that quickly turns in chaos & him screaming, "I KNOW THE PIECES FIT!!!" over and over again... And then BAM!!!.... abrupt silence. It's over..... And all you can do is move on to your next song.
