That fucking drone is amazing, but I see so many people talk about how much they dislike it. If it still hasn't clicked for you, come back to it at a point in your life when the sky is falling. Put some headphones on, and then play it in complete darkness. Then maybe it will finally make sense to you. The music itself never changes, but we as people do.

I listened to GY!BE back in my early twenties, got super bummed about their breakup, then kind of moved on with my life. I recently watched Under the Banner of Heaven which had East Hastings featured in one episode and it fully reignited my passion for this band, and I come back only to find they've released, like, four more albums since I stopped listening. That's funny. My only problem with this album is that the ambient middle section drags on for too long. I prefer it when the drone parts are shorter and more evenly distributed among tracks. The first and last track on this album, however, are great

I remember clearly the first time i heard this album was when I borrowed a friends Ipod whilst travelling Central America. I used to listen to this album while driving through the countryside of Nicaragua, Guatemala etc. I was heading to the ancient mayan site of Palenque and knew this album would compliment it. I was walking around old temples contemplating all the bloody battles over the hundreds of years and sacrifices etc. I didn't need drugs or alcohol etc, i had everything I needed. For the charging outro I just sat infront of the Temple Of The Count and took it all in. I was nearly in tears by the end and i'm honestly getting goosebumps just writing about it, it truly was one of the most powerful moments in my life.

To me this album feels like a story in 4 parts. Peasantry or 'Light! Inside of Light is a society recognizing impending disaster but optimistic that they will be able to stop it. Lamb's Breath is when the disaster hits and the area turns into barren wasteland. Asunder, Sweet is when they attempt to leave their desolate surroundings but in the final track they realize that everywhere else is just as barren as where they came from, so they try to rebuild and avoid the mistakes that led to the initial disaster

it's funny how much of a compliment or act of devotion it has become to buy a physical copy of something haha but i feel the same as you
@metatron75159 жыл бұрын
Ricardo Clemente i know what you mean, if people stop caring and making these devotional acts, music as a whole will most assuredly die as a result, that is why we as fans of beautiful music, now more than ever, have a responsibility to show the artists we care about and enjoy the love they need, or else they will cease to be -- end rant
@jayrowlesjr98809 жыл бұрын
Ricardo Clemente I agree. For me, buying the physical album is meant as exactly that: a compliment or sign of true fandom. That's how I show how much I like a band, by how much of their discography I own physically. Plus, there are a lot of little details and flourishes you get with the album art. I love looking at jacket designs or lyric book layouts, and adds a lot to the overall feel of an album.

I was thinking about what is happening in the world at the moment: institutions, belief systems, economies, national borders, superpowers, governments, even religions are all dissolving. I saw them play last year, and seriously I was blown away. Thought about it for weeks afterwards. Really made an impression on me. Their use of film (celluloid) with the music is riveting and it seems to take in so many images of decay, with one of the main points being that the USA is in decline. At least that is what I got from it.

I saw these guys live last night playing this as the main portion of the show, but also played some portions from Skinny Fists(parts of Static), "'Allelujah!" (Mladic) and even "Slow Riot" (Blaise Bailey Finnegan III) which I recognized. They started off with Mladic, but extended the intro with reverb on a cello and violin for over 10 minutes, with each band member slowly stepping on stage over that time, all the while static on the projection screen behind them began to materialize into flashing scribbles spelling "hope." The show was honestly just amazingly atmospheric. I got real spooked though as they played Lamb's Breath and Asunder, Sweet from this, with distorted images of a deer and sheep in the background, flashing in their negative colors. Right now, I think they might have blended the image of that deer with the album cover here. Honestly, didn't really think too much of this album, but around that point 30:00- 33:30 in Piss Crowns when they played it, I was biting my lip because it was so fucking perfect. I think Piss Crowns might be my favorite Godspeed track. I feel like this is their heaviest album... laced with a lot of sadness and grief almost towards the end. Every GY!BE album is different, like they have different auras about them. It's impossible really to say one's the best, depends on what you're in the mood for. F#A# is truly apocalyptic on a bleak future. Skinny Fists is like a walk through an entire lifespan in an hour and a half. Yanqui UXO is that wartime depression album. I love them all deeply.

What a fantastic band. I 'rediscover' specific albums of theirs at different times. What I mean is, I've listened to all of them, but perhaps I'm not always in the mind-state required to fully take them in. About 5 years back, F♯ A♯ ∞ captured me on a wild 3 tab acid trip. A monumental work of art. 2 years ago, Yanqui U.X.O. became probably my favourite release of theirs as I was aimlessly walking around Barcelona after finding out my mother had passed away from cancer, halfway across the world. I was in the right state, a 'god damn it, fuck it all' attitude that made me completely align with the magnificent, apocalyptic music. Today, I've finally heard Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress in what must be the right mind state because it's hitting me unlike every other time I've ever heard it. There is not a single album of theirs that is a misstep. just a genius bunch of people that want to put all their thoughts and emotions into music and release it out onto the world.
@dawsonj819 жыл бұрын
to me it's a tragedy how misunderstood this is. It's basically one long song. Individual movements, etc. The thing is, I always sort of facepalm when people say there's ''boring parts'' it's like they only wait for the noisiest moments or climaxes. That's extremely narrow minded and really discredits this incredible group. They're making pieces, not soundbites for you to easily consume. Without the quieter parts, the huge climaxes wouldn't have any context. I don't get it, but i guess it's their opinion and yada yada yada. I just think, like find another band if that's your issue. These guys are never going to be for you.

Dawson J I think it's just right :) They represent something special, they're showing an unique way. The way of what? I don't know, but I listened cliché music too, some metal, some rock.. Then Billy Talent (from Canada too, with original tunes.. I just felt something in it). Then I get started to listening to punk-rock (Bad Religion, NoFX, Rise Against), I wanted something more special, with an unique opinion and new tunes (for me). 5 years passed and now I'm here, listening GYBE (and TSMZ), opening my soul and looking at it thru my meanless body. I think it's more then a band, more then a music, and I think people that don't like it aren't prepared yet. For what? I don't know, but they are not. And I think somewhere is something more delicious that I don't understand yet just like people don't understand GYBE now. Because I'm only 22yo and the life is way fu*king long. And I'm afraid a bit. And the meaning of it all? That the phrase "these guys are never going to be for you" can be false, they could be for everyone.
@benighted19849 жыл бұрын
Dawson J That people have different tastes is not a tragedy, it's the miracle of life! It's not narrow minded but it's highly narrow minded to expect everyone to "understand" (=like) the same music. The Jazz lover, the Opera lover and the Beethoven-Freak will think the same about "their" music... Just enjoy the music - and the miracles of life (there are so many colours out there (in the minds of people), believe me!

Even on one of my least favorite godspeed albums. I still fucking love it to death. I put Godspeed on a very very very very very very very very high standard

+Dominic Vogel See every Godspeed record is fucking amazing, 10/10 discography for me. I would rate it like this: 1. F♯ A♯ ∞ 2. Yanqui U.X.O 3. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven 4. Slow Riot 5. 'Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress 6. 'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! All of these albums are phenomenal

This doesn't feel like a full complete album to me, but I did very much enjoy it's sounds and nuances. Very conquering and dramatic. I like.

Given the fact that each song carries over from the last one, it really is more of a 40-minute single.
