I used to listen to them with two precious friends/brothers, in the beggining of this millennium. We would play them in abandoned factories and buildings. We would get in a car and drive through empty mountain villages and roads in the middle of the night. All the buildings and night creatures would merge into the interior of the car. Sometimes i would smoke and the herb would merge into the interior of the buildings and night creatures that were merging into the music in the interior of the car. Like that, layer upon layer of sonic goodness. Landscapes made with spider webs. The car tires made of honey. Now, like always, life is still beautiful and filled with delicious secrets. Some friends remain, some are gone, but beauty is always around - to see it we just need to be grateful and abandon fear and expectations. I have a roof, food and health, my country is at peace and i have an infinite array of culture at my disposal - what else could anyone expect? I just bought the ticket to see them in Lisbon, together with my two friends, this November. For a second i hesitated on buying the ticket. I wondered if there was really something magic in GY!BE (because i didn't listen to them in years). I clicked on this video and WOW! Thank you all, brothers and sisters. Obrigado!

Great. I discovered them in 1998. Was sure, when I heard them on my favorite radio program (The dead flag blues) on a sunday night, that if I finished a rendering film for my architecture / urban planning diploma, that would be the sound for that. When they were playing in summer 2000 at Cologne got there. One of the most stunning concert events I ever was allowed to witness. A concert you might once tell your grandchildren about. Muit obrigado Bartolomeu Gusmao. Hope to maybe see them another time again on stage. If not - I was lucky to see them once in a lifetime. That's already a lot. Best wishes to all of you guys here. Take care.

The cacaphony of the crowd with the drone at the beginning is actually an awesome organic embellishment and a dissonat harmony until the band swells in to start the catharsis the crowd is about to have. I remember seeing them upon return from their indefinite hiatus in Nashville and our crowd became dead silent as the music began. I think we were in such eager anticipation of their return we hung on every note and drone and tone in total silence. I thought I had found my favorite band, but that I would never get a chance to see them and perhaps we as a crowd were in mutual agreement or it damn sure felt like it. If the band were to ever get silent, we would have heard a feather reverberate through the venue. God's pee was truly raining down on that day. The music was an abundance of golden showers and harmony. I'll never forget seeing my indefinite favorite band live for the first time.
@mikekelly78624 жыл бұрын
I love how you showed the crowd starting to leave at the end. Godspeed live is such an intense, special experience. There is some serious energy going on in those rooms that I've never felt at any other show. And there's always this kind of communal amazement in the audience. Like after the show you can 100% just look at a stranger and just go "holy shit", and they immediately get it.
@stevegoodson90223 жыл бұрын
Had the same experience seeing Mogwai live, loads of stunned people wandering around trying to remember who they are, where they're going, who they're with, and how to exist in a world where you don't have transcendent music shaking your body and redefining your reality. Never had the pleasure of seeing GYBE live, but if I ever do I know I'll need an exit strategy for re-integrating with baseline reality. May even take some notes for myself to avoid getting lost forever

Been to other post-rock bands (e.g. Mono, EITS) but there is simply nothing like Godspeed. The darkness of the room, the projections, the long drone at the beginning, the energy and anticipation when they first come out, the lack of interaction with the audience, the sheer loudness and raw power of their music. I can't wait to see them again.

Just saw them live a week ago at First Ave in Minneapolis, their music was on my mind a lot during the uprising here when the city I call home was in so much pain and so when I saw them live finally it just brought all those emotions back. The catharsis, the burning passion, the anger, the sense of hope from seeing that precinct on fire. God I fucking love this band. Very little music in this world can actually just perfectly encapsulate a feeling but GY!BE really capture that yearning for freedom, that hope against all hope, catharsis in destruction.

I truly think one has to spend some time in Montreal - especially in the MILE END neighborhood to really understand this band. I have been staying in Montreal for the past 3 months (from Philly) - and I have been frequenting Casa De Popolo (the Music venue/tavern that one of the members of the band opened). Montreal in contrast to US cities, and even Toronto, is a "Proletariate" City, Creative-Working Class, Egalitarian politically, and socially. It's beautiful, and yet scruffy around the ears...there is kind of a "Brooklyn Vibe"...bagel shops, an Hasidic community, and a Post-Hippy Hipster glaze over everything! Honestly - the place, like this music is invading my mind - and stealing my heart!

I've never heard of post-rock before 30 minutes ago. I did a quick search for the best post-rock band and godspeed came up. I'm currently 12 minutes into their concert and they haven't played a single note resembling a song yet. Just sounds like an orchestra tuning and that's the worst sounding part of any orchestral performance. What is the appeal of this "music"? there seems to be no semblance of structure at all.

The opening is "Hope Drone", which is a bit brutalist. Godspeed You! Black Emperor take a little while to adjust to, be patient, it will be rewarding. Trust me on this... the first time I saw them live, I only saw half of the performance because I didn't get it. The second time it took until the second half for it to click. That term can come with a pretentious feeling, but it's not pretentious at all (even thought a lot of bands in this genre can be very pretentious).
