I used to despise small talk, now I see it as a praise of Divine Providence.

Even when I was painfully socially awkward and introverted an disliked to keep to myself, I never understood the hate with small talk. Well of course we have to ease into it first! I'd hate to go in too deep immediately with someone I haven't had a feel for first.

26:50 - “There’s a good that’s able to be had, received, and GIVEN in this intermediate.” Giving it the perspective that we have the ability to GIVE a good - that’s so helpful! A good thought to help get us out of our own heads and put the focus on the other.

Not always easy but even if you hate it, offer it up for love of God. Remember that Christ was also annoyed at the slowness of the disciples to believe or come to understanding of something.

Okay, you convinced me. I have definitely been a small talk hater for all the reasons you mentioned...shallow, who cares, feels fake, etc. It makes me cringe when, every time we go to a restaurant, my husband says to the server, , 'Busy day(night), huh?' But I guess it is a way of truly being kind, not just talking to hear your own voice. There definitely needs to be a beginning of every relationship, however brief, I have been on the side of let's get to talking about things that matter, but I will give small talk another try. I will work to cultivate it. ;)

When you’re engaged in small talk, there’s an entire unspoken language being shared. Observe and you can learn a lot about the person! …and to one of FG’s last point: sometimes the mood of the person taking my order at Starbucks directs my morning attitude 😂

Thank you for this episode. A few years ago this was my view on small talk - that it's burdersome, unnecessary. Recently I've come to realise that it is an important thing, it's not without purpose as it's purpose is to learn about the person, interact with them and it can lead to deeper relationships, friendships etc. As you said, an intermediate step and as such it should'nt be discarded.

I think small talk is the opportunity to witness to the Gospel and just love your neighbor where they're at. I think as we fall more in love with the Lord and see the wisdom in the Church there can be a tendency to become malcontents toward the world and lower goods. But I think we need to recognize how much evangelical power there is in loving every person you see where ever they're at. Sometimes their poverty is intellectual, and I don't say that to be mean, but truly to love someone well in that place isn't easy but I think it's a big spiritual win for the Kingdom if we can do it. Anyway, I'm just a simple housewife so I probably think this way because I don't get out much lol. The grocery store clerk is my only friend, guys!
