It was phenomenal. There’s definitely an argument to be made that it rivals the original.. watched it twice in IMAX to be sure in that opinion.. GO SEE IT PEOPLE

I'd still say the original is the best, even if it is by debatable standards. While I did love the human elements in this film, it still can't quite compete (to me atleast) with Serizawa's WMD speech or "A Prayer for Peace." Say what you will about the monster action and endings. The Oxygen destroyer sequence with the two divers is still great and haunting.

Godzilla vs Mothra was the first Godzilla movie I ever watched and it became an obsession for me when I was younger. I haven't really kept up with the Japanese Godzilla movies but I did really enjoy Shin Godzilla (2016) and would recommend it if you're interested in checking out another. The 2014 American reboot and the KoM sequel are some of my favorite Godzilla movies as well. I kinda liked 2000 because it came out at the height of my obsession with the older Japanese movies and I was still a kid. vs Kong was a bit too much imo though lol.

Diehard Godzilla fan and this movie was perfect. I think it’s better than the original and even writing the words feels blasphemous. I cried on the way home not just because of the emotional weight of the film but because I was so happy with how good it was and the response. Great review and I appreciate your honesty and even your criticism as they are valid. Thanks

I've been a colossal Godzilla fan since I was a kid. I'm now 60 and my love for the big beastie is stronger than ever. For the uninitiated this movie is the perfect starting point for anyone who hasn't seen a Godzilla/Toho Godzilla film before. I like the Legendary Studios films, but not as much as the good Toho films. My trifecta is the original Gojira/Godzilla from 1954, Godzilla Minus One and Shin Godzilla, in that order. If you plan on watching more of the Toho movies, you're going to find out that not all are of this high quality. In other words, get ready for some goofy stuff, unfortunately. Another really excellent movie is Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monster All Out Attack (aka GMK). In fact the ending of Godzilla Minus One mirrors the ending of GMK. Check out those movies!

I would say before this movie the new king of the monsters film was my favorite. But now Godzilla minus one is ny favorite. I highly recommend Godzilla destroy all monsters, Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla, Godzilla vs Biolante, invasion of the astro monster, and Godzilla vs Destroyah. Those are some if the best classic movies. Of course you need to see the very first original as well.

Just the story of the main protagonist (failed kamikaze pilot) could have been developed into a stand alone movie and it would have been amazing. But then they toss in a terrifying monster to boot. This one almost had me in tears - the PTSD thing went through really hit home as I’ve had my own (not monster related lol) The one thing I had to kind of suspend disbelief (other than Godzilla obviously) is that the US occupied Japan during the entire time period the movie took place. So technically you should have seen Americans running around everywhere. But I can understand why they wanted to leave the Americans out of this one. Love, love, love this movie.

I've been a fan of godzilla for 27 years now and can say this is possibly the best godzilla film yet. I caught it on the 29th in Dolby AMC, will catch it again on the 3rd on IMAX and finally on the 5th in 4DX. I will make my final placement after my 3rd viewing but as of right now its in my top 3 amongst all 37 films.

Not sure if you mentioned it, but the Director also did the visual effects himself. As far as the effects being not as good in some parts, I didn’t notice that at all but I have noticed in a lot of marvel films and Star Wars films movies that cost $200 million plus there are scenes were special effects look half ass and shouldn’t be so to this movie has much better effects, especially because of this budget By the way, it’s also good to know that the movie made back it’s budget money before Wednesday not on Wednesday, but before Wednesday it made it’s money back

Best Godzilla movie since 1954's Gojira and the best movie I have seen in America in almost a decade given the nonsense Hollywood produces today. But if you are a newbie to this Japanese intellectual property, I'd recommend the documentary on the history of this Godzilla that covers the motivation behind the creation (found on YT) and start with 1954's Gojira, preferably the Japanese uncensored version. I personally prefer the Japanese Godzilla versions. They just know the property way better than we do which makes sense since Godzilla comes form their culture. I though the American Godzilla 2014 was pretty good and also Godzilla The Series (Animated) (American-Japanese). As for The 1998 TriStar Godzilla Movie....we don't talk about that movie. 😂

As a Japanese, I recommend you “Shin Godzilla”. “Godzilla minus one” and “Shin Godzilla” are not movies made for kids. Especially, “Sin Godzilla” is a kind of the simulation about “What would happen to Japanese political system, if Godzilla really emerge.” So it is quite hard to understand without knowledge of Japanese politics. That is the reason “Shin Godzilla” couldn’t make successfull result outside Japan. Although it made huge success domestically. Other Japanese Godzilla films are made for kids., except the first “Godzilla” which is made in 1954 in black and white . It was a great film at those days, and has a lot of meaning for Japanese movie history. But, if you see it now, there are faults and flaws. Unless you see it with a respect for the history. Of course, other kids Godzilla movies are also fun, if you have kids mind still.

I can see how Shin wouldn't connect with an international audience. But tgat mass confusion, and all of the cover up that the Japanese government could apply to any government. I could definitely see the government here in the US tell us "don't worry i assure you it won't make landfall" next thing you know its slithering around New York lol. And the 1954 Gojira isn't just a masterpiece in Japanese filmmaking, its a masterclass in filmmaking in general. I still get choked up when I see the "prayer for peace" scene. Its more than a film, its a work of art. I hope Ishiro Honda was proud because his film stands the test of time.

Godzilla’s best movies are when theyre done by Japan, when godzilla is the sole villain, and when the movie is some metaphor about nuclear war. The best ones, and what i consider the legacy trilogy now are: Godzilla (1954), The Return of Godzilla (1984), and Godzilla Minus One (2023). Shin Godzilla (2016) would wave made the list if it wasn’t directed like an anime (Youll kno what i mean when u watch it). The era of godzilla movies with the best kaiju monster battles and with a more serious godzilla is the Heisei era which are the 7 movies that span between 1984 and 1995. After Heisei, the Millennium era of godzilla movies was kinda just boring not that great idk personal opinion. The showa era of movies that started with the original 1954 up until 1975 are all pretty silly and geared towards mainly children, with exception of the original one. This brings me to the american ones…. Theyre All honestly trash. Americans are out of their element, only the Japanese understand how to make a good Godzilla flick

I totally disagree with what you said about the effects. I did not see one instance of anything looking not up to par. Everything looked amazing. Especially if you compare it to shin Godzilla, which for me with a pile of crap. I also didn’t like Godzilla 2014. But I did like king of the monsters. I also really like 1998.

@@zonzillamagnus5902I’m a Japanese but that depends on the movie. There are some critics in Japan that the acting in G -1.0 is a little bit over. Although in my opinion it was okay compared to other awful actings from other Japanese movies. Also most people here were satisfied about the main actors acting especially in those critical scenes. Well I hope they change a little bit of their acting direction in the next movie. Still, it was marvelous though.

Fantastic analysis. The cons can certainly be considered nit-picks. The only con for me was the ending. It wasn't bad but the film gets a bit confused with its direction of whether it wants to be nihilistic or optimistic. It could work if it's a gray area but it just kind of commits to something full force and then kind of backs out.
