Appreciate the informed utterances. Eiren wasnt rating movies in 1954, but currently G '54 has a "G" rating on KZbin. G ratings in Japan are surprisingly permissive. DUNE, War for the Planet of the Apes, every PG-13 Marvel & DC film, recent Mission Impossible and even some R rated films got a G in Japan. I was shocked that the English trailer was a green band "Approved for All Audiences" approved by the MPA for US theaters & released simultaneously. Even more wild is it's looking like Toho is releasing this in the US and on IMAX.

It definitely feels a lot more lenient. I mean there are children who watch attack on Titan according to my Japanese friend back when it first aired. Even Shin Kamen Rider's occasional bloody brutality only netted it a PG-12 rating. I don't think it's extreme though, if anything it feels more fair than the UK rating imo.

I wanna put forward a theory to the plot that I haven’t seen anyone else come up with yet. I believe its possible that the majority of the clips we’ve seen (at least of Godzilla) actually take place in the first few minutes of the movie. From the second teaser we got the other day, it seemed to imply that Godzilla existed during the war and that he had been sinking vessels prior to his appearance in Japan. In addition, both the teaser and this trail state that the government (probably the US) is trying to cover up Godzilla’s existence and supposedly have been tracking his path of destruction at sea. Knowing this, it’s possible that after dropping the bomb on Hiroshima, Godzilla finally surfaces in Nagasaki, which is most of what we’re seeing in the trail. In order to try to kill him, or at least bury his existence, the US drops the bomb on Nagasaki, which is the nuke we see going off in the trailer. From there Godzilla leaves and doesn’t make landfall again until 1947 when the rest of the movie takes place. It’s just a theory and it doesn’t explain how the protagonists survive the nuke. Perhaps they’re false protagonists or maybe they somehow survive the nuke, but I’m just speculating.
@BigActionBill
@BigActionBill Жыл бұрын
That definitely sounds like a possibility. I agree with you on the shots we’ve seen so far probably taking place all in a few minutes of the movie

I'm still hoping we get a director's cut of the 2014 "Godzilla". Akira Takarada's scene needs to be put back (especially now that he's no longer with us) & we need more footage of Godzilla & the M.U.T.O.S. without it being shown only on monitors. And it goes without saying the film needs to be a bit brighter during the dark scenes. They were okay on a theater screen but are way too dark on DVD/Blu-ray. As for "Godzilla: Minus One", December 1st can't get here soon enough!

I am really happy about the post-WWII period of this upcoming movie. My biggest curiosity is whether the film will discuss or address the war crimes that Japan committed during WWII as the sort of spiritual awakening of Godzilla or the reason Godzilla will “never forgive us”? I know that’s a touchy subject in Japan, so I don’t know if the writer/director wants to address that because it could more-or-less be implied rather than be an explicit plot point. They kinda did this theme in GMK, so perhaps it would be a retread, but it would go a long way to explaining why Godzilla hates Japan specifically for atomic bombs the US was responsible for dropping. I just hope they don’t try to spin Japan’s hardships after the war as unjustified US aggression on a “blameless Japan”, because Japan left the US no choice and educated Japanese already know this. Such a spin would cause some big political backlash from Japanese and US media. So I honestly doubt they will go that far. Japan’s military knew they could have ended the war and knew civilians would die regardless of whether it be firebombs, atomic bombs, or mass invasion; and willingly chose not to surrender. The only reason they didn’t surrender was they wanted to surrender on their own terms which the US would not accept after all the atrocities Japan committed. Japan was just as much a victim of their own government as they were a victim of the atomic bomb. Godzilla’s hatred for Japan should (in my opinion) be tied to that because it gives Godzilla some symbolism. Perhaps Godzilla himself is supposed to be that stand-in symbol of Japan’s pridefulness being shattered. He’s there to remind Japan they weren’t just victims of the US, they were victims of themselves. Considering there appears to be some sort of government conspiracy/coverup in the plot; one could safely assume Godzilla will be the stand-in symbol for Japan and the US covering up Japan’s war crimes like what happened in the Tokyo Trials. In other words, like with the original Godzilla 1954, I theorize this film will use Godzilla as a symbol of Japan covering up her dark past the same way they will attempt to cover up the existence of Godzilla until it becomes undeniable. They likely won’t explicitly address Japans war crimes because that would also cause some political backlash from Japan’s right-wing nationalists the same way a movie about America’s war crimes would trigger our ultra-nationalists; besides, going too far and making a fictional character everyone likes the byproduct of real world atrocities probably isn’t the best thing to do to begin with lol. Instead they’d probably do the smart thing and use Godzilla as a symbol only historians or film analysts could pick up on. But that’s speculation. Even if none of this happens, I’m sure the movie will be a lot of fun!

I think the Explosion could be Godzilla firing his atomic breath. But you can’t see his beam soo. That explosion also looks a little to small for a nuke to me atleast. But I’ve heard people say that the ending could be the Us drops a nuke of Godzilla and our main characters die and Godzilla lives giving it a bleak ending would be very interesting.

One of the characters in the trailer says that the monster will never forgive us which has me wondering if it's Japan itself that does something to either create Godzilla or awaken him. If they're the cause for his rage then that means Godzilla has more of a personal reason to attack rather than just being some monster going off instinct. Also that roaring shot at the end, clearly some kind of major weapon is used against him to make him look like that but that roar though, holy fuck that may be my new favorite roar in the series.

My theory is that the Imperial Japan found out about the existence of Godzilla, and wanted to use him as a last resort to fight back the Alliance during WWII, but for obvious reasons it backfired and also led to the event of US dropping atomic bombs on Japan. It would be an interesting plot twist to see.

There is another interesting detail in that new trailer. At 1:01 of the trailer You can see, that Gojira attacks a ship with a gun turret on the bow. This ship is obviously a heavy cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The Japanese Navy had all together 18 heavy cruisers. 17 were got lost during world war 2 and only the "Myoko", damaged by a torpedo hit, survived in Singapore. The haavy cruiser, which is shown in that short scene is the "Takao". The "Takao" was the last heavy cruiser of the Japanes Navy, which got lost on July, the 31st in 1945. That means, that a part of the story of the movie takes place during world war 2.

I don't know what ship gets yeeted into a building in the latter half of the trailer, but it looks to be a destroyer or frigate of some kind. The lightest warships of that size in the area in the time period shown are the survivors of the Momo-class destroyers, at 850 tons displacement. That's 864 Metric tons, or 1,904,774.4 pounds. If we assume it's just the broken off bow section and use just a fifth of the ship by weight, that's still a MINIMUM of 170 tons of steel being hurled through the air. According to a scroll through wikipedia, the heaviest rail car I could find in Japanese service(thrown early in the trailer) was only 50 tons. Just in case anybody wanted a lower limit to how strong Godzilla is.

Mr. Bill, have you considered doing History Of videos for the Rodan and the Mothra movies? I say that because while they aren't Godzilla, the first Mothra and Rodan movies were made with many of the same people who worked on the original Godzilla films and are a part of that timeline. Not to mention the three other Mothra movies are interesting to look over. I know it would be like a long time before we should ever see those videos, but I am always fine with waiting for good content. Really I am just asking if you have ever considered it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't care about spoilers. Honestly I almost always spoil a movie before I watch it. Even with twists I don't care if the movie is good knowing the twist should actually enhance it. That's why I am one if the few people to say that the usual suspects is not very good. There is no clues to figure it out on your own. It's all truncated at the end. The only movie I'm genuinely glad wasn't spoiled is old boy. But even if I had known the ending it wouldn't have made the ending any more devastating. But I think it's kind of an American thing. I've literally heard people say they decided not to watch a movie because the ending was ruined. What! Most movies you know how it will end. Doubt anyone watched a new hope and thought Luke would fail to shoot down the death star while the princess and the base gets blown up. And I mean they make prequels. So idk doesn't make sense to get so worked up to me.

I'm mixed on the Day vs Night thing for Godzilla. Godzilla was born as Film Noire. And night is a core element of the genre. And yes while we know that Night is often used to mask limitations in FX and CGI, , when used well it adds more weight, terror and gravitas to the action. It is nice seeing our favorite monsters for full on daylight beauty shots. But by all means please tease me a bit in the dark first. As far as "Blaming America for Godzilla" I think the original did a good job of making a timeless statement without dragging international politics into it. It should probably be remembered that a few people involved in the original Godzilla were kind of lucky to finally be taken off the list of "War Criminals". The post war US Occupation Administration had no sense of humor with regards to Tsubaraya. Toho was dealing with some political realities themselves. But there was another reason the original producers didn't "Blame America" overtly. And it's something to be wary of with Godzilla Minus One. Unlike the current Filmakers, the entire production crew of Gojira, had lived through that devastation at the end of WW2. This was their life experience. But they had a very different and rather more nuanced opinion on the war, and responsibility for it, that gets missed by modern academics and Hollywood types. Those trying to second guess history rather than studying it. The General Japanese view of American's in the immediate aftermath of WW2 was one of confusion, curiosity and oddly hope. Japan had been ruled by a rather brutal Military Junta for decades. In the final 2 years of the war the Japanese people were starving, with a massive famine looming starting in October 1945. The Government, ruled by the Army had been taking ever more from them to feed its wars. ANd then the Emperor did the unthinkable and surrendered. And the actual Japanese people for the first time got to see the face of their enemy. They were expecting horrible treatment. Mass rapes sand murders by rampaging soldiers. Instead what they saw were polite kindly men a long way from home. Going out of their way to see that they were fed. Were given Medical Care. The first order from MacArthur the day he set foot on Japan was that no American Soldier was to take anything from any Japanese Citizen. The second order was he ordered that the vast reserve of food that had been stockpiled around the Pacific to feed the planned invasion force, instead be sent immediately to Japan to feed the Japanese population. The Face of the Enemy was not what the Japanese Leadership had been saying for so many years. This left the typical Japanese citizens in a very confused and conflicted place about the Americans. And a much less conflicted place about the Generals that had brought them to that point. It will be interesting to see if or how the movie addresses those actual nuances of history.

Reminds me of this one meme edit from one of your videos I think it was from a rush hour movie but the line from a movie went something like "Oh so now you cool, but the second Godzilla comes ya'll be trippin'' Lol

Ok, so if Aaron Rogers wants to go see Godzilla Minus One, he'll have two days after the game against the New York Giants in the Ultimate "Battle of New York" to get to Japan for the premiere. If he manages to get on an 18 hour flight to Japan the following Monday, the whiplash will be rough, but he should be able to see the movie and be back in time to play the Chargers. He might have some controversy if he doesn't play well after the less sleep he's bound to have, but his response, "Least Godzilla has won an achievement award in the last 50 years". Ouch.... Good luck this season. love the videos! 😆

If you ask me, this Godzilla seems to be the result of the 2 nuclear tests from Operation Crossroads in 1946. Either Able or Baker...

Just because a movie doesn't take place in the same time period, it doesn't mean that the movie isn't a remake. In fact, this movie is almost certainly a remake. If no mention is made of Godzilla already existing, then by definition it is a remake of the 1954 film. King Kong (1976) was remake of King Kong (1933). Godzilla (1998) and Shin Godzilla were both remakes of Godzilla (1954). The basis of all of these movies (Godzilla) is the same character/creature being remade. No remake that I ever heard of (except for the 'Psycho' remake) is an exact remake of the previous version of that film. All the other Godzilla reboot's by Toho referenced the 1954 movie, therefore, they were not remakes.

Yup. I don’t call it a remake for a few reasons. If the story was the same I’d call it a remake but judging from the new characters and the government coverup mentioned in the trailer this movie looks like it’s going to have a different story than the original. Not a big deal, if people call it a remake that’s fine but I don’t feel right calling this a remake. So instead I just call it another Godzilla origin movie. Maybe reboot is the better word for this, I’ve seen Shin regarded as a reboot. Idk lol

The trailer gives the impression that the film is very much about Japan taking backs it’s dignity post-war which makes me think it’s less about the bomb and more about American occupation. Can’t wait to see where they take it.

I wonder if the rumor is true of a second Godzilla appearing in this movie , I don’t know why I am still on this theory , which the trailer didn’t show , he was going to look similar to this one but with whale skin and two dorsal plates, and unmuted, And I guess he was going to be good , also they said that both Godzillas well have there own personality, It’s what I read online and a video , awesome video and never apologize take your time great video
