On January 23, Takashi Yamazaki, Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, on their work on Godzilla Minus One. All 610 of the film's visual effect shots were handled by a crew of 35 artists at Shirogumi's Chōfu studio, under the supervision of Yamazaki, and direction of Kiyoko Shibuya. Yamazaki himself had to go overtime and do the visual effects himself at certain occasion. The entire process spanned from April 2022 to May 2023. Thank you, Yamazaki. Thank you, Toho. And thank you, Godzilla.

今日4回目を見に行ってきました！なぜか一番胸を打ちました。今までYTなどで色々な情報を知ったからかもしれません。この映画の作成決定は4年以上前、3年かけて30稿の脚本の書き直し、撮影、編集などなど。それがちょうどコロナ渦の最中でどれだけ大変だっただろう。一番観客が映画館にいない時に「とにかく面白いゴジラ映画にするために」作り上げた関係者には尊敬と感謝しかありません。これは映画館で見るべき映画です。いずれ配信されるからと待ってる方は絶対後悔します！今見れる時に映画館でぜひ見てください！

This wasn’t shown in the video, but the close-up shot with the water mine in Godzilla’s mouth, I can’t tell if that's entirely CGI or an animatronic built for that close-up. That’s how good the VFX are in this film, much deserved Oscar Nomination 👏

Proof that the problem in films IS NOT the use of CGI, but rather the lame stories and directors use of the tool. We give far too much credit to Directors who are mostly hacks. CGI has long been saving these guys films, which theyve long used as an eyecandy crutch for their lack of good ideas and good direction. And as such.. theyve only gotten worse over time to the point that even CGI can no longer save them. But here is a film that uses a ton of cgi in the way its suppose to be used, and guess what? in the right hands with the right minds... GOLDEN!!! stop blaming CGI when its the failure of pre-production.

what Minus One understood (and Shin Godzilla understood even better) is that you CAN make CGI look practical, so long as you limit the animation to an extent. It's not the texture detail that gives CGI away, it's the animation. Too much movement in CGI always looks kind fake. Godzilla always looks best when his movements are slow and deliberate. I think Hollywood can learn a lot from this approach
