A playthrough of Toho's 1989 license-based action game for the NES, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!
As Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! opens, the inhabitants of Planet X have declared war on Earth, and the entire solar system has been turned into a massive battlefield. Godzilla and Mothra join forces in order to fight the enemy and save the planet.
The duo battle have to recapture the worlds that stand between them and King Ghidora's stronghold on Planet X, and the surface of each planet is made up of a field of hex tiles. Godzilla and Mothra have to defeat any enemies they encounter on this field and capture the enemy HQ in order to move on.
The map resembles a scene from a table-top strategy game, but it's essentially a glorified stage select. Each tile shows an icon that reflects the area's terrain, and the terrain determines the type of action stage you'll face if you end a turn there.
The action stages are the real meat of the game, and they're loaded with swarms of enemies and inconvenient terrain features that you have to safely navigate. This makes your choice of character an important one: Mothra's ability to fly over low obstacles makes her ideal for areas loaded with ground-based enemies, while Godzilla's whipping tail and radioactive fire breath let him waltz through tanks, cannons, and mountains with relative ease.
If a classic Godzilla monster is nearby, you'll take it on in a 1-v-1 battle using the same moves that you have in the action stages, but these fights last just forty seconds. If the enemy gets away, they'll regenerate some health and you'll have to try again.
Speaking of classic Godzilla monsters, there are a ton. Gezora, Moguera, Varan, Hedorah, Dagora, Manda, Baragan, Gigan, MechaGodzilla, Matango, and King Ghidora all appear over the course of the game.
I have no idea what the general perception of this Godzilla title tends to be, but I liked it. The action feels overwhelming at first as you find yourself getting pinned behind obstacles and whacked by an endless stream of bullets and lasers, but it becomes manageable once you get used to the controls and the flow of the stage layouts.
The more your characters fight, the stronger they'll become, but it's important to keep your heroes' levels even. Godzilla is the easier and more fun choice in most cases, but if you neglect to build up Mothra in the earlier stages, she'll be thoroughly useless later on.
There are some obnoxious moments when the game decides to stun lock you in a corner, but that can be usually be avoided if you're careful enough, and the bosses can be frustrating until you figure out that you can stun lock them, but overall it works well. The gameplay is significantly less polished than you'd expect from a Compile game, but it is much better than you'd expect from a licensed game published by Toho, and it looks pretty nice for a game made in 1988 despite the slowdown, sprite flicker, and the endless recycling of stage layouts and enemy types.
It's not a deep game, but if the idea of planet hopping as you lay waste to an endless stream of aliens and spaceships appeals to you, Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! is a fun way to sink a few hours.
If you like Godzilla, you might also like Vasteel on the TurboGrafx-CD ( • Vasteel (TurboGrafx CD... ). It feels a lot like this but with a much heavier emphasis on the strategy elements.

I'd combine Monster of Monsters with Goonies II room searching, turn-based tactical first-person, and other crazy shit into an NES game if I had the chance. I do like this game. Still, I concede the length of later levels; it's better to use passwords between sessions. Have you ever listened to that password music theme, though? It's so eerie and horrifying. Maybe it's so we don't cheat....

I always found the gimmick of this game interesting, with the board game-like means of choosing to progress with Godzilla/Mothra. The actual gameplay is decent, I like it. The scale kinda makes you feel like the monsters, with the larger-than-usual sprites and meager obstacles to tear through. Pretty good soundtrack too!

You play this game like a pro!! Nicely played. Wanna know something? In my early teens, I envisioned an animated Godzilla series with some of the music from this game. [the US opening/Planet X Theme as its main theme and the Ending Music as the epilogue music] The series would 've involved Toho's Godzilla fighting alongside various other monsters against the Xilien forces before an ultimate battle on Planet X. Nice strategy with Godzilla vs. Gigan there! [keeping him at arm length with slugging it out keeps his Rotary Cutter attack at bay] But considering this game throws a TON of crap at times at Godzilla and Mothra alike, I think there oughta be a Tohou-themed romhack of this game.

(The title screen music from "Super Godzilla" plays while a shot of the Nerd as a child playing on his NES is seen.) The Nerd: As a kid, two of my favorite things were video games and Japanese monster movies. Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, Ghidorah, Mecha-Godzilla, monsters beating the hell out of each other and blowin' the fuck outta everything in sight. I loved that shit. The Nerd: Being a Godzilla fan in the late '80s and early '90s wasn't easy for an American, because for one thing, the only way to see these movies was to scan through the TV guide every Sunday and see if any happened to be on. Or go to every local video store, hoping to be lucky enough to find some on VHS. The Nerd: During my lifetime, there were only two Godzilla films released in theaters here in the United States: Godzilla 1985 and Godzilla 2000. The 1998 American version doesn't count. It wasn't until I got Internet that I found out Toho had still been making these movies all through the '90s, but they were only in Japan. I was pissed off. The Nerd: When it came to video games, we also got fucked pretty hard. This was my first Godzilla game, Godzilla on the NES. Let's pop this piece of reptilian fuck-nugget in. (Godzilla is blocking half of his own name on the title screen) "Godzi, Monster of Monsters!" This should already be a clue to how half-ass this game is, because he's blocking half the title. (The intro starts) The Nerd: "In 2XXX A.D...." Why's it always X? Like they couldn't come up with an exact year, so just make it X. "The earth receives... a... dec... lar... a... tion..." Oh, fuck this, let's start the game. (Gameplay starts) The Nerd: (Sarcastically) Great lookin' game. What's this, Godzilla chess? So you take control of both Godzilla and Mothra, and move them around these hexagon spaces. Then you go into these battle zones. The Nerd: This is more like it, right? Classic side-scroller action. More like classic mindless button masher. Oh well, at least you have a lot of attacks. Godzilla punches, kicks, swings his tail, and breathes his trademark atomic breath. How often has Godzilla ever been in space? Once, as far as I remember, Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. Why not take place on Earth? I wanna trample some buildings. Instead, I'm just beating up on rocks. And how does Godzilla jump without bending his knees? Looks like he's bouncing on a trampoline. What are these things? Evil totem poles? What's this, too? What's that? What's everything?! Did they just send Godzilla to some shithole planet that happens to be the garbage can of the cosmos where everything that never existed got thrown away? The Nerd: After you get through one of the battle zones, the CPU moves one of its own monsters. Then it's your turn again. You can move Godzilla, or Mothra if you want. Yeah, let's check out Mothra. The Nerd: Well the good thing is that she can fly (obviously), which means you can bypass obstacles. When you're playin' as Godzilla, every two seconds there's a pile of rocks in your way. But Mothra just flies over that shit. Well except when you get hit. Anything that touches her, she gets forced to the ground. She can shoot tomatoes. (?) And drop wings. Yeah, she drops wings. That would be like if you could throw your own arms. Mothra sucks. That's all there is to it. When you pick Mothra, the game just laughs. (Godzilla is getting hit continuously) The Nerd: What's this? What the fuck's hitting me? What is this?! Oh, it's the volcano?! I can't walk past a volcano that's in the background? (Godzilla kicks the volcano) All I gotta do is hit it? That's a sensible solution, kick the top of a volcano. The Nerd: The idea of each board is to destroy all the monsters. Here, we have Moguera and Gezora. Are you kidding me? Moguera and Gezora? Out of all the available monsters in the Godzilla franchise, they had to go with two monsters that weren't even originally from a Godzilla movie. Of course Moguera appeared in Godzilla vs. Space-Godzilla and there's stock footage of Gezora in Godzilla: Final Wars, but those movies didn't happen until way after this game. (Godzilla repeatedly hits Moguera) The Nerd: I found a glitch where you can just keep hitting Moguera with your tail. Look at that. So easy. (The Nerd is fighting Gezora when the screen goes black and it returns to the board) The Nerd: What happened? There's a time limit? Yeah, so if you take too long to fight the monster, you gotta start over. And the monster regains some of its life. You don't. The Nerd: The worst part: after you've defeated Moguera and Gezora, guess who's next? Moguera and Gezora. Yeah, they just keep recycling the same monsters but add one per stage. Like here we have Varan, another obscure monster that appeared in its own movie, then made a small cameo in a Godzilla film. The Nerd: Engaging the monsters in battle is awkward. "Will you fight the enemy?" Yes. "Will you fight Gezora?" Yes, that's the enemy, right? Other times, you don't wanna fight the enemy, but it doesn't take "no" for an answer. No! (Doesn't take "no" for an answer) Goddamn it, I said, "No!" (Still doesn't take "no" for an answer) Then there's times when the game thinks you're tryin' to move and the monster's blocking your way. Like "Yeah, there's the monster, I wanna fight him." The Nerd: Throughout the game, the choice of enemies gradually becomes more what you'd expect. It goes from Baragon and the Smog Monster, to Gigan and Ghidorah, but Ghidorah's tucked away in a corner so you'll be lucky if you get that far. The Nerd: Here's Mecha-Godzilla; now that's what I'm talkin' about. (Mecha-Godzilla's health is really low) Almost got him. I'm gonna win! I'm gonna beat Mecha-Godzilla! (Just as the Nerd is about to beat Mecha-Godzilla, the time runs out and he goes back to the board screen.) The Nerd: THAT FUCKIN' TIME LIMIT! THAT MOTHERFUCKIN' SHIT-SUCKIN' TIME LIMIT! It's not even like there's a counter. It's like the game just pulls the plug like, "Oh, you're gonna win? (Mimics a guy pulling a plug) Well - not anymore ya ass-bag, fecal-fucker, shit-shaped anus brain!" The game cheats. That's it. That's all there is to it; the game fuckin' cheats. (drinks some Rolling Rock)

Even though I was never a kaiju movie buff, I really enjoyed this game as a kid. I still do actually. Yeah, it has its flaws like the repetitive bosses, levels that *constantly* throw enemies at you without warning and Mothra just plays poorly... But the graphics are nice (I especially like the occasional 3D effect of some of the spaceships shooting projectiles at you), it's fun just demolishing everything as Godzilla and the music is really good. Not a _great_ game, but it's not as bad as some make it out to be.

See, I actually liked this game, but my strategy was to ditch Mothra early in the game since he/she was utterly useless. So as long as Godzilla lived, you didn't need Mothra at all. I always found it funny how so many people shit on Mothra when she can take down Mechagodzilla and mothereffing GIGAN without much fuss. Even with Godzilla it's a crapshoot, cause if Gigan chooses to spam his buzzsaw, you're just boned. Mothra can at least sit back and shoot him from a safer distance. Speaking of Gigan, his theme just ABSOLUTELY SLAPS. Best track in a game already full of stellar music.

I had less than no interest in Godzilla when I was a kid, but you better believe I rented nearly every single game my rental stores had, this included. I was a sucker for both large, detailed sprites (yeah, I knew to call them that even then!) and weird, unusual stuff, like the weird board game here, in otherwise conventional games (which this already isn't even without it). Still, I never could get very far and I really hate games in which damage is impossible to avoid. I know that's par for the course when you're Godzilla, but no thanks.

I remember playing this game on the NES about 1993 or 1994..I was fighting against Varan one time(I can't exactly remember if I was Godzilla or Mothra)...but I got another screen saying VARAN THOUGHT THAT FIGHTING ON THIS LEVEL WOULD BE DANGEROUS...SO RETREATED TO THE NEXT AREA...Anybody else remember this?

I do. Occasionally the monsters will retreat. It can happen as early as the beginning, as I've had Moguera run away before. For some reason, Hedorah usually hightails it out of Jupiter during my playthroughs.

Decent Godzilla game, good graphics and music, but pretty monotonous.

I love how the ending isn't just the aliens going away, cowering with their tails behind their back. They're coming back to fucking GET your ass.

This game was pretty fun but the sequel was absolute crap. A strategy godzilla? Dumbest idea in a long time.
