What do you mean? Kong VERY clearly lost this fight - his heart even stops beating and the humans had to "revive" him using the flying machine to shock him and get it beating again. Godzilla absolutely, unequivocally dominated Kong in this movie and that's what you'd expect because, at the end of the day, Godzilla has WAY too many advantages over Kong when you're being honest about it: 1. Godzilla is bigger - he outweighs Kong by a LOT 2. Nuclear breath - this means he can hit Kong with a really deadly attack from miles away OR from point-blank range - and the only thing Kong can do is try to dodge it (which he fails to do here, ultimately) or stop it from going off - note that he even uses a tool - the axe - to try to give him some advantage and it helps absorb the nuclear beam from Godzilla - without it the fight would have been even shorter. Kong has absolutely no defense against that attack - if it hits, it hurts - a lot 3. Armored scaly skin - Kong has fur and human-like skin underneath that - Godzilla has incredibly hard, difficult to pierce scales 4. REGENERATION - even if injured, Godzilla has the ability (yes even in the monsterverse, it's been confirmed) to heal - notice that by the next scene after this fight, that wound had vanished - the Japanese godzilla has tanked black holes to the face and falling from space - but even THIS version has survived drops from the atmosphere - which given his 100,000 ton weight would put enough force into his body as if you dropped two Titanics from space, survived MULTIPLE nukes (one in 1954 and another in 2018), the oxygen destroyer (which weakened him, which is why the nuke energy was overloading him - otherwise he'd probably shake it off without any issue - keep in mind the oxygen destroyer is the weapon that KILLED the original 1954 godzilla so surviving that point blank is crazy - the same weapon would have left nothing but bones on Kong) 5. A very long, powerful tail in addition to clawed, strong forelimbs - Godzilla can grab him, smack him down (as he did on the ship with one slap after Kong punches him) and on top of that has that tail, which if he lands a direct full blow with it can be lethal, as shown with the MUTO in the 2014 film 6. Shark fangs 7. Dorsal plates that make it very hard to get at him from behind in combination with the tail 8. Shocking speed for his size and mass 9. The ability to stay underwater INDEFINITELY - which means he has a huge advantage in any fight that has them falling into the water (as seen in the earlier fight where Kong barely escapes with his life with the help of the humans) Literally the only reason Kong survived this movie is because THIS version of Godzilla isn't trying to kill him. That's right. He's not. This Godzilla only wants one thing from him: Submission. Notice that he came up to him again after the Mechagodzilla fight and Kong had this look of "oh shit...please not now" - Kong drops the axe and submits and Godzilla accepts this, and walks off. It's about DOMINANCE with this Godzilla, not just killing every other kaiju that moves. Oh he WILL kill another kaiju that attacks him - but he doesn't want to kill them so much as to put them in their place. And with Kong, he does that. Three times in this film, in fact: he leaves him barely alive on the ship - once Kong could not longer fight back, the attack stops - and true, Kong had been sedated and was out of his element, but he was still clearly defeated here, no matter the reasons used to rationalize it. He then loses the fight in the city - outright. He gets some licks in but much of this fight is spent with Kong simply trying to SURVIVE the fight - he's running, he's trying to keep clear of that nuclear beam and he's DESPERATELY trying to stop it from going off. Kong is smart - he knows very well that if that thing hits, it's going to really hurt him. Barely getting ZINGED by it on the side was incredibly painful for him so imagine a point-blank blast to the chest or face - absolutely lethal. Kong knows that. That's why he's running and using the axe to block it. Look at that look on Godzilla's face. He's ENJOYING this - cat and mouse. End of the day, Kong is on his back, Godzilla brings his big foot down and it is over. Kong lost round 2 even WITH a weapon and being on land and no excuses as to being drugged. Then after the mechagodzilla fight (and to be fair, Kong was VERY good in this fight and the two worked together nicely) - he clearly submits to Godzilla once again. Now, to be entirely fair to Kong, Kong was just minding his own business on his island when he was kidnapped, drugged, dragged out to sea and basically left as a target for Godzilla - he wakes up to find himself about to be attacked by this insane creature in the middle of the ocean. Kong didn't want any of that - he just wants to go HOME. Still he fought back and survived (granted, because Godzilla let him and the humans helped) and still had the balls to fight him again in the city AND take on mechagodzilla. Kong would demolish most of the other monsterverse kaiju except for King Ghidora, that much is clear - he's very smart, knows how to use his environment as a weapon and very strong - but MAN I just feel bad for Kong in this film - he didn't want any of this and didn't go looking for a fight. He's also MUCH younger than Godzilla - and much less experienced in battles of this scale - the only things he'd really fought up until this point had been skull crawlers and whatever else lived on skull island - he'd never encountered anything like Godzilla before in his entire life. So fair play to Kong - he did well considering.

This was a great fight. Kong was able to get in a lot more hits than Godzilla but Godzilla being a tank the hits didn't do enough damage to truly hurt. Godzilla is also a heavy hitter so with each landing attack he had on Kong it hurt a lot. Godzilla was lucky that the axe overcharged in his face, because if that blade hit him in the head it woulda busted his skull open, so props to Kong for almost delivering a fatal attack to Godzilla. As the fight went on they were both getting more and more tired, but Kong was tiring faster, as he was on the defensive most of the time avoiding all of Godzilla's devastating attacks.

Welllllll except for the fact that Godzilla ABSORBS his own - and any - radiation and can...you know...regenerate like wolverine even if he is injured. Kong was NEVER going to win this fight. He's just completely outmatched. BUT, I will say, while Godzilla CHOSE not to kill him at the end of this fight - just like he chose not to kill him at the end of their fight at sea, that's not even the point of this fight: the POINT is that Godzilla is ONLY fighting Kong because he views him as a threat to his dominance and wants him to submit. That's all he wants out of Kong - submission. Kong, to his credit, refuses to submit even when he KNOWS he can't win. Godzilla could have killed him and TWICE does not do that because in the end of fight 1 at sea, Kong is on his back on a ship and showing no signs of fighting back - Godzilla takes this as the fight is over, "I've given him the warning I intended to - now I'll just leave" - it wasn't until Godzilla SENSED Kong down below messing around with an axe that is made from the spine of one of his ancestors that he went "OK, monkey boy, if it's round two you want, GET UP HERE!" - and burns a hole through half the planet. In this fight, Kong once again ends up on his back, unable to fight back, but this time Godzilla step up and basically says "SUBMIT!" - to which Kong answers with a roar back that means "NEVER!" - but there's a hint of fear in his eyes at this moment. Godzilla, seeing this, almost nods as if to say "You're a feisty one. I respect that. Very well then, you have earned my respect. Just stay out of my way and we're good." This fight was all about Kong earning Godzilla's RESPECT. Which is something NO OTHER KAIJU HAS DONE! Everyone else either submitted to him or died. But Kong, and only Kong, earned his respect and walked away alive as a result. Then, after his help in the Mechagodzilla fight, Godzilla does not even fight Kong again. No point. They each know the score, they each know Kong will not submit, and Godzilla say "fine, long as you're not AGAINST me. We're cool." after seeing Kong drop the axe (which was not submission but more Kong saying "I'm not submitting but I also don't want to fight after all that we just went through". A lot gets communicated between the two with just some looks and a few roars lol

I like how you can see how the fight starts with Godzilla toying with Kong for a good while, but then Kong shoved that Axe down his throat and he went "Haha okay that's funny. Now you die." Now having lost his shit, Godzilla goes ballistic on Kong, but Kong's greater intelligence saw a weakness and took it, giving Kong Godzilla's respect. He may not be the true king, but he damn well can give him a fight, and he can't afford to take it easy when facing him, lest he get a mouthful of axe and explosions. Godzilla definitely wins a lot more fights if he takes it seriously from the get-go, but Kong still wins a number in between 10 and 30 percent of the time.

"Looks like round two goes to Kong" is very emblematic of Kong's status in these fights. He gets utterly dominated throughout most of the fight, but the moment he gets both of them knocked down for half a second, someone has to declare Kong the winner, because that's the only way anyone will read it as such. People tend to artificially build up Kong in his media because if they didn't tell us he was the best of the best, he'd just come off as kind of average. And I'm glad that the *rest* of this movie acknowledges that that doesn't really work. That Kong is a perfectly good character who doesn't *need* to be Godzilla's equal, who doesn't *need* to have the advantage, who's *allowed* to be vulnerable.
