Another tip, bring cash, because a) it limits the amount of money you can spend, and b) a lot of the vendors (at least at my local expos) won't take cards. Sure, expo venues usually have atms nearby, but it's easier to regulate yourself when you pay with the cash you bring.

Some more random tips for anyone interested: 1. Make a list of the things you're looking to buy and of any questions you want to ask, it can be easy to forget to buy an item or ask an important question! 2. Take the breeder's business card that they usually have at their table, it's good for when you have additional questions after the expo, and most breeders don't mind the occasional text 3. Don't feel like you have to buy an animal that you've handled/shown interest in, the pressure can be a lot when the breeder is right there watching you but ultimately it's better to be 100% sure that the animal is right for you Cheers!

@helenkemper29965 жыл бұрын
I went to an expo "to just look." It's near impossible to leave without getting something. I came home with a ball python. I had done moderate research, but it was a little impulsive! I would recommend having the tank, substrate and environment ready before getting an animal! When I took her home, all I wanted was for her to be comfortable in her tank but it took me a while to gather supplies and set it up
@bluestang95303 жыл бұрын
Before I go I usually have a few animals in mind that I “might” come home with. So in the week before I set up two or three enclosures just in case I come home with something. I’ve only been to a show twice but bought something both times. First show was a Vietnamese centipede and second was a milk snake and a alligator snapper lol. I feel like a tweaker walking around an expo lmao

It can exciting in the heat of the moment getting a new animal and it might slip your mind to ask obvious questions like what it's eating, it's age etc. I got my first ball python last weekend at my local expo and I ended up having to email the breeder a day later with basic questions because I was so excited :P

My first animal was a praying mantis and I kept it how the seller told me which was completely wrong. I noticed that something was wrong so I did my own research but it was too late so safe her. Since then I don't trust anybody who wants to sell me a pet. Its the best to inform yourself about the breeders who are on the expo and buy from the ones with a good reputation

It's also best to know what you want and research the care requirements beforehand.

Why would you not do research before wtf...
@innercitydaydreamer11246 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue i come across is that the sellers are often hired by the breeders but only trained on specific species and general questions so they get confused and mix up information. Its vary disheartening.
@hajarmdn48835 жыл бұрын
@@stadzh it was their first pet. Unfortunately a lot of people don't understand the commitment at first. I know I didn't with my first hamster. I made very fast research and just listened to the pet shop owner because I trusted that they knew better. They didn't. I didn't even make enough research about hamsters until after a couple months of getting my second one after I stumbled upon Jenna Marbles hamster video. She is now being spoiled and living her best life. My cat got the same treatment, knowing my previous blunder, I made a lot of research to know exactly how to make sure he thrives (l got him off the street and wasn't even counting on keeping him at first so that's why I didn't research for him beforehand). And I'm still lacking. I won't do that mistake again. I want a snake now and it's been over a year of research and since I livein a third world country and only found one shop selling reptiles (and they're so bad. They don't have any hides for their animals. Housing two adult ball python together. Only feed live. The leopard geckos are all together and the poor animals are in such a bad state), I'm doing more research until I can find more, specially frozen mice since I don't want to feed live. If I don't find that then I won't buy a snake. I made mistakes before but I'm counting on making things better in the future.

if the morph is the defining factor about wether you'll get a snake or not, you shouldn't own them in the first place, unless it's some venomous view only snake, which in this case it'd definitely not. it should be more about health, personality, what it feeds on, and other similar stuff, not just how it looks.
@maddiemainer7 жыл бұрын
white lip pythons are not a morph, they are a species of leiopython from Indonesia. I have a certain locality I am aiming to get, and have been interested in and done research on for years. It is 100% okay to purchase a snake based on morph as long as you can care for it properly, and it's not a morph (like spider or lemon frost leopard geckos that carry cancerous genetics) that has demand which continues to promote breeding a gene associated with neurological or other issues (head wobble). I do, however, have any issue if someone acquires a "problem gene" animal through rescue or adoption.

My reptile expos are awesome, they don’t allow wild caught animals, the breeders are small and local, the prices and variety are the best around, the breeders are knowledgeable and truly care about the well being of the animals, and most of all the animals are so healthy and happy and when you buy from them you’re supporting the reptile society where I live, so I go there every time, even if all I buy is supplies, I have a great time. I’ve never had a bad experience there.

You also mentioned purchasing one animal at a time. I do understand that. However impulse shopping can get you for sure. Personally though I buy multiples at a time and here is what I do when I attend. First at home I set up the cages (quarantined)for what I am thinking of buying and do my research. Then I write it down on a list. Now when I go I am already set up for the animal I want. At the same token If I do an impulse purchase I try to keep it within the same perimeters (cages, size, environment, etc..) of what I originally wanted with maybe a few minor changes. Also I never do impulse on a rare animal I know nothing about. I learned the hard way with this when it came to panther chameleons (not that they are rare, but I knew nothing). I now have two in my collection but my first one I was not ready to take on that challenge, and the animal suffered for my stupidity. I felt horrible. Even with that being said. Never give up. If you really want it as a pet. go for it. If it dies it may not have even been your fault. It could have had an infection before you bought it, and that may or may not be the breeders fault. A lot of people are handling these things and could pass on an infection from one animal to another. still do not blame them, and do not get discouraged. You will still have the set up. Take time, do more research and do you best to find out what went wrong so that it does not happen again.

You talked about handling every animal you purchase. I would agree with that with one note. Do not go around just handling every animal you see, even if you are hand sanitized. Make sure you really are interested in purchasing it before you ask to hold. Cross contamination is a real problem. Breeders do not want their babies dying from some infection from another animal you handled. Keep in mind that it is a business and peoples livelihood is on the line. Besides that the breeders take a lot of time caring for them and do not want to see any animal especially one of theirs dying due to a laps in judgement.

The way to get the best prices on supplies such as glass habitats is to go towards the end of the day on the last day of the show. This is when sellers are making the steepest price cuts because they don't want to load up all the glass. As long as the offer still permits them to make a little money, they will often agree if you are buying late on the last day. Most of the time you will be able to negotiate prices of live animals but the price you offer has to be reasonable! Asking for 50% off is insane! But 15-20% is some times agreed to. It really also depends on the person! Some of the women get super offended when you make offers. Acting as though you just slapped them across their faces with your glove and challenged them to a duel lol

The negotiating thing totally worked for me I bought a 300$ female lavender corn snake and got her for 200$ instead. Don’t really know much about snake prices but she was gorgeous

Our next local expo is still about 4 months away, so I went and found their vendor list from last year and found a local breeder to get my baby from a little earlier 😊

GoHerping I'm getting one sometime this month and I have its enclosure ready but do you have any extra tips when I get my KSB?

Xenomorph Queen Just normal snake stuff. Make sure you quarantine. I find not feeding the first week helps snakes feed so they can adjust before getting a mouse in their face. Double check temps before you get the snake. Don’t handle for the first week-3 weeks (that’s personal opinion some people do 24hours to a month of not handling)

There are no expos in Norway. And almost no breeders. And they don't live where I live. So I have to buy my gecko from a pet shop, but I have made sure the shop workers have taken care of it properly and it seems healthy and happy. So I think it will be fine!
