INTRODUCTION
Kenyan sand boas, the weird, chubby noodles of Africa whose head and tail are hard to tell apart, and have pudgy eyes on the top of their head. I don’t know how you could resist. With only a few potential drawbacks and their easy nature, I would definitely consider these sand boas a beginner snake. You may think of very large snakes when you hear the term “boa” however, females rarely exceed 3 feet, while males are even smaller as adults, at around 2 1/2 feet. Keep in mind, they’re nocturnal and love to burrow. Although they often come out at night and may explore their enclosure, you’re going to have to dig around in the substrate during the day to find your boa. Remember, Kenyan sand boas, like many reptiles have quite long lifespans. You can expect them to live anywhere from 15 to 30 years in good care, with some individuals living a bit longer.
ENCLOSURE
Kenyan sand boas certainly aren’t going to be a big issue when it comes to space. A hatchling can start out in a 10 gallon enclosure or larger, and adults don’t require anything more than 20 gallons. As you may know, GoHerping doesn’t believe you can ever have too large of an enclosure, however, your can have too bare of an enclosure. For example, a 50 gallon with plenty of places to hide, explore, and so on (if properly regulated) is much better than a 20 gallon with nothing in it.
SUBSTRATE
Sand. Good option, right? It’s even in the name! Well, in my opinion, sand should always be avoided, even with Sand boas. The risk of impaction exists with all reptiles, and sand is by far the most common suspect of this deadly issue. If you’re unaware of what impaction is, it’s essentially when an animal ingests certain materials that are not digestible, most often through these indigestible materials sticking to their food (like sand on a damp mouse). Overtime, it piles up inside of them and can eventually clog their organs and has lead to the death of way too many animals. Learn more about impaction by clicking here.
Well, why not just feed the snake outside of the enclosure, in a separate cage or tub? In my opinion, this is another big no-no, which was covered in this video.
Now, let’s talk about good substrates. Remember, Kenyan sand boas love burrowing, so paper towel, reptile carpet, etc. are not options. In my opinion, the best substrate has to be aspen. I use “Lizard Litter”, which is made of aspen chips. It’s non-toxic, natural, dry, and lets your sand boa burrow with ease. Adding a few inches of this in your enclosure works great. You may be wondering, what about..... [ FULL WRITTEN CARE GUIDE AT goherping.com/k... ]

Hey GoHerping. The Reason people say that you don't want to keep snakes like this in too big of an enclosure is because when people do they don't do it the right way. While they do have unlimited space in the wild, they have many hiding spaces and things to interact with. In a 10 gallon, the average lets say Ball Python may need 1 hide to feel safe, but in a 20,30, or 40 gallon, a baby may need 5-8 hides to feel secure and eat good for someone as a pet. Besides that, Great Video, and I love how you design and make naturalistic cages for your snakes. Great Job!!!

I hate that you even have to say that you can't feed tofu/vegan food like I'm a vegan but I, not gonna feed tofu to my fucking snake 😂 people who do that are dumb and shouldn't be allowed to have a pet snake, it's just cruel and it gives a shitty name to vegans! I'm so glad there are informed people like you to educate those who have no idea what to do!

Magical Miranda agreed!! Snakes can get very mal nourished when owners try and make their pets vegans.

Elizabeth Dewitt Not just can but WILL! That’s cruel to the snake, for they aren’t built to be vegan. Some people are so stupid.

Actually chameleons are insectivores and cannot live off of fruits and vitamin supplements, but your point is still valid. Basically if you are uncomfortable with the idea of any animal eating other animals, don't bring a carnivore into your home. If you claim to be vegan for the purpose of reducing cruelty to animals and then you starve a carnivore because you're uncomfortable with its natural diet, then you are abusing that animal. Most vegans I've met aren't that stupid, but there are stupid people in every group.

Just got myself a sand boa. The centre I got him from suggested just a heat mat under the tank, a hide, water and sold me a couple packs of calci sand that they keep them on. That’s all they told me that they need... just doing more research before I go back and collect my snake

So I've been mildly nervous about the humidity in my sand boa's enclosure for some time now. It's not tremendously high, but it's not uncommon for it to be above 50%. I'm using a dial to measure this, not a digital probe, so part of me wonders if it could be faulty measurements. I think I'm doing everything right, I'm not misting the enclosure or adding moisture beyond a waterbowl, which I keep on the opposite end of the enclosure to the heat pad, and I'm using aspen shavings as a substrate. I'm not too worried, but I would appreciate a second opinion to make sure generally 50%+ isn't going to cause problems for the snake, and what I can do to control that number if I have to. I know GoHerping literally has a video titled "Pet KZbinrs Are Not Your Exotic Vets," so I apologize if I'm being stupid; I'm quite new to this.

I went to two pet stores and both wrongly informed me on my baby. They said my snake needed a 80% humidity but it’s okay if it’s anything high (which didn’t sound right to me) that I needed a glass top so I can keep the humidity in (wasted $20) said when my snake is fully grow it will still be happy in a 10gallon take (now I know to upgrade my take when it gets bigger) and said they recommend using coconut hide for a sand boa

I agree with go herping because my Kenyan sand boa I know when she got tired of a space that's when she tries to do her escaping so every time she did that I went up another 10 gallons I'm starting to believe that for every foot of snake you need 10 gallons of space and true look at the outside where they normally come from where they should be they have an infinite amount of space so why should we limit that it's just like you said you have to gauge your animal if you see them stressing then change their space. My her Misa Hermes she is about two and a half the three feet long and I just moved her from a almost 20 gallon tub to a 40 foot turtle terrarium and I promise that she uses every bit of that space she seems happier

Why wouldn’t you put the thermostats probe on the bottom of the tank on the heating mat directly? Lol so much easier - you never have to worry about it moving or the snake moving it resulting in accidental burns

I might be getting a Kenyan sand boa soon. I've done all of the research, watched this video, read your care guide, looked at other websites, and I'm pretty sure I know everything I need to know. I live in North Carolina, and I currently own a Leopard Gecko, and he does fine in the lower humidity of my house, just wondering if there's anything I might've missed, or maybe even some nice tips for owning one. Thanks!
