Do you recommend getting a box turtle for a “intermediate” reptile keeper?

​@@sillyminicat a beginner could keep a box perfectly if prepared well, so I don't see why not with the right steps to ensure husbandry is all good. biggest issues are amount of space for adults, a diet more complicated than just a bug or a pellet, and the fact that they're guarantee to outlive you at 100+

PSA!!! Box turtle season is coming up now that it’s warm and rainy, so I cannot stress this enough: DO NOT MOVE A BOX TURTLE! If it’s in the middle of the road and you can safely do it, stop and move them to the side of the road they seem to be heading towards and leave them alone. Never pick them up and carry them off, or move them far away from where you found them. In the wild they lock on to where they are born and stay within a mile of that place, if resources are there, for the entirety of their lives. They will die trying to find their home and they get incredibly stressed if moved or caught to be a pet. Please, unless they are in danger, leave them alone. They are also endangered I’m my area and most places around, so I’m many places if you see one you can take a pic and send it in to research teams tracking local populations. It is illegal in many places to take them. Sure this info if you are in their range.

THANK 👏 YOU 👏 I remember years and years back going to a camp in newyork and this was the first thing they told us when they showed us some larger rescue box turtles. So many people don't realize it's illegal to own them and then end up abandoning or mistreating them because they don't get proper treatment fearing they'll get in trouble. It's really sad

I feed my box turtle everything she eats on a terra-cotta dish so it grinds her beak down even if it’s just squash and moistened pellets. An easy preventative measure!

Watching this made me miss my grandpa. He passed away beginning of last year, but he used to keep box turtles during the winter time to keep them warm and fed. I always remember playing with them as a kid. Thanks for the great video that made me think of my grandpa ❤️

When I was a kid (some 30 yrs ago) box turtles were common in pet stores. I am relieved that is no longer the case as they were likely all wild caught. It is always wonderful to see these beautiful animals arrive caring homes after a rough go in captivity.
