I want to explain here and share with you the process that it takes to translate western names into Japanese, because I think its actually pretty easy.

Katakana and hiragana have some similar characters so it's not that hard such as Hiragana: Katakana せ : セ (se) か : カ (ka) き : キ (ki) Etc There are these words that will give you some trouble in katakana シ (shi) ツ (tsu) ン (n) ソ (so) ノ (no) And these in hiragana を (wo) ぬ (nu) め (me) ゆ(yu) ね (ne) れ (re) け (ke) た (ta) に (ni) は (ha) ほ (ho) ま (ma) BTW I learnt these in a continuous week with practice so I believe you can do too and better. Good luck! Oh and on a last note here are some example of Kanji writings 山 (Yama) = Mountains 二 (ni) = two 好き (suki) = like love etc

My name is ルーク. Which is Ruuku. So basically, my name is Luke, however the "Lu" sound simply doesn't exist in japanese, although it can be swapped out for a similar "Ru". The ending singular sound of "K" isn't possible in Japanese, so we swap that for "Ku". I specifically chose "Ku" because the vowel is dominantly pronounced with the "U" vowel. Now, we need to extend the "U" vowel, to compensate for the pronunciation of Luke. So we have ル (Ru) and extension of the words to make the U sound longer ー and finally く (Ku). This is written in Katakana. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

You get two different choices with Katakana: - Traditional (which uses only the ones which can correspond easily into Japanese phonology) - Expanded (which for English and/or foreign speakers makes translating their words easier to differentiate) So long as you know the basics for how to pronounce the word you wish to transliterate, then you can easily make it so.

I have written my name in three different ways. When I started learning japanese I wrote ビョルン. When I studied in Japan I wrote ビョン in the beginning. Halfway through the course the teacher asked if I have a long or short vowel in my name. I realised it's a long one, so now I write ビョーン.

I've seen "che" written as チェ before. Even my Romaji keyboard on my phone typed che that way. And I think even my high school Japanese teacher used チェ, and she's native Japanese. That said, this was a great video!

Luke Troftgruben Calligraphy is a form of art, but hardly anyone uses it for normal writing. It’s only for special events or holidays that they use it. And I do kind of agree the calligraphy is a bit too bulky.

@@evie5375 No, you cannot do whatever you want in most cases. It can be hard to tell what to use for names, but there should be only one variation of that name. For example, アレックス and アレックスー are different. You have to use the first one.
