I always found people that wanted someone "as beautiful as a swan" always assumed swans are as majestic and kind as they are beautiful, so they expect that personality and beauty in the person they were interested in. WRONG. Swans are aggressive, protective of their home/property/food and will kill not just scare bc they mf can.

He made a mistake that he regrets. Also his Mom and Odette’s father wanted them to make a decision together but tried to have them fall in love so they can get married. If the arranged marriage was official they would have forced Derek and Odette into marriage. But when Odette said no despite all of those years trying to have them close so that they can fall in love they don’t go through the marriage because at the time they thought it be bad. That’s why Derek did what he did till Odette said no.

Also, Odette just never returns to her kingdom. She's saved, marries Derek, and that's it. The kingdom Rothbart killed the king and kidnapped the princess to get? Never mentioned or shown again. Instead, Odette stays in Derek's kingdom, she never even returns to her own. What are we supposed to think happened to Odette's kingdom? Did it fall apart? Was it taken over? Did some other royal ascend to the throne? This movie did not care for the fate of that kingdom, lol

also even if rothbart was able to marry odette, he wouldn’t be able to become king. He would end up being a prince-consort, and unless the queen or the court decides to make him king (which probably would NEVER happen) then he’s just stuck as a prince-consort and his plan ultimately fails

Especially since they spent every single summer of their life together. I remember this movie had such an impact on me for pointing out that beauty isn’t everything.. but it falls so flat because of Derek! Odette has absolutely no reason to have any positive feelings towards him. He literally bullied her their entire lives, but that’s somehow redeemed because… he learns to love her? The message ends up being “true love is when he loves you for you, no matter who he is or what he’s done.” The bar went from mutually shallow attraction to a woman should be happy as long as a man actually sees her as a person, and she will still love him even when he doesn’t. The worst part is that that’s basically where the bar is in real life, so it’s really just a reflection of heterosexual love as it is instead of the portrayal of a healthy ideal that they tried to make. I mean, how many of us can relate to Odette pining for the guy who treats her like crap just because he showed the least bit of interest? I know I can. So in a dystopian way, this is more realistic than most romantic movies for kids. And writing that out, romantic movies for kids is already a really creepy concept :’) why are we like this?

Ofette was never pining for Derek until he became an adult and attractive to her.. throughout their childhood she was never pining for him.. what, besides his looks, did odette fall in love with.. that’s why I don’t understand this hate for Derek. Neither of them had any reason to love one another. All they had was that they mutually agreed the other was attractive. It was an arranged marriage, what more did they need to be honest, if years of childhood couldn’t make them fall in love, but seeing one another as attractive did
@uMaud
@uMaud Жыл бұрын
I was with you until you claimed it to be a reflection of heterosexual love. Not all men act like this, and a significant amount of women also act like this. This dynamic isn't specific to a particular sex. Pinning on someone who doesn't appreciate you as much as you appreciate them and who treats you like crap reflects you probably have some issues to work on.
@Toniinbetween
@Toniinbetween Жыл бұрын
@@uMaud I absolutely have a lot of stuff to work on, just like Odette! Of course it’s not going to apply to every man, woman or couple ever, that’s the thing about generalizing. This is just one extreme of a larger spectrum of heterosexual love that a lot of us have learned to idealize. The question is how common it is and what messages we are fed in general, because the fact that a lot of us function this way isn’t just because of some inherent flaw in our personality, it’s taught. Like I said, it’s an extreme, but we don’t exist in a vacuum. I really hope I’m just being cynical for thinking this is more common than what, say, Rapunzel and Eugene has.

I loved this movie as a kid. These days I find it to be... okay? It's not my first choice when deciding on something to watch but if it were to be on TV for some reason I'd watch it. "This is my Idea" is the best and my favorite song of the movie. It's realistic to an arranged marriage situation, it's the only point these characters are the most expressive with personality, and it's catchy. If this was a animated short, you could have had this movie end on that song with the "they lived happily ever after" assumption.

Point 1: I LOVE your hair Point 2: Derek's a dweeb, and BOTH of them were way more interesting as kids Point 3: If the king and queen had wanted to unite their kingdoms, why didn't THEY get married? They obviously get along, his wife is dead, and you never see whether she still has a hubbie, so why not?
@astralwyrm3787
@astralwyrm3787 8 ай бұрын
On point 3. Probably because the queen couldn't conceive a child by the time they had this plan available. They couldn't just hand the inheritance of the throne to derek or odette individually because that is a recipe for malcontents claiming a royal line is ruling illegitimately. The heir to the throne needed to be descended from both royal lines so it could not be contested. Hence Derek and Odette needed to marry and rule the kingdoms together; producing an heir who would inherit both kingdoms.

I think the BIGGEST Problem with this movie is the fact that they make it about "beauty isn't the only reason to marry someone" but never do we see Derek get to know her other attributes as kindness, being smart, courageous ..ets and THEN fall in love with her. Even the audience, we don't even learn anything about Odette! I think it would have been awesome if Derek realized that he messed up big time when he mistakenly vowed love for the black swan JUST because she is beautiful and never realized she wasn't Odette because he didn't spend enough time with her to marry her. They should have left it as an open but optimistic ending, or maybe show us that they got to spend time together and fall in love truly.

What floors me is that, he's literally known Odette for their entire lives, and legitimately struggles to find a non-superficial reason to love her. That, and from their teenage years into young adulthood, Odette seems to have retained none of the wit, confidence, or humor that we saw in This is My Idea. Remember girls, you can be either a person or you can be beautiful - both is not an option.

18:50 In answer to your question, this movie heavily implies that Odette is unable to speak to people in her swan form, and she is the only one who can communicate with the other animal characters (probably a side-effect of the spell). 🤔 However, this is retconned in the sequels. In the first two sequels, Derek, Odette, Bridget (Rothbart’s former henchwoman), and one of the villains are able to fluently communicate with all of the animal characters (which, to be fair, could be explained by either magic, or Odette teaching them how to understand the animals). Then in the CGI sequels, the animals are able to communicate with anyone. 🙄

@janeyrevanescence12

From what I understand of the situation, he was fired because of the massive flip that was The Black Cauldron…which itself suffered from massive Executive Meddling to the point Jeffrey Kratzenburg personally cut out several minutes of film in the cutting room after a test screening resulted in several crying children and parents complaining about the film being too scary. Ironically enough, the failure of The Black Cauldron and subsequent mumblings about the animation department being shut down is what convinced the animators left to bring their A Game to the next project, The Great Mouse Detective. It was just enough of a success (despite An American Tail coming out that same year) that executives had enough confidence to put more money into the animation department, which led the way to the Disney Renaissance of the late 80’s to the end of the 90’s. So yeah, thank Richard Rich and Don Bluth for getting the ball rolling.

I think the best way to describe the story is that it's very "boomer" in terms of lessons. The writers could've taken the time to make a better story and give Derek a way to really redeem himself in terms of character. Rothbart's "evil plan" made really no sense in any regard. I guess the writers were like "fack it, it's a kid's movie, they won't care too much about plot and growth or lessons". EDIT: Scratch that, it was ONE writer. I don't think he had much people take a look at his script.

Oh my GOD this movie!! I hated this movie so much but then I became absolutely OBSESSED with this movie for the longest time??? I watched it and it's sequels obsessively for a period. It was so bizzare to me. lol I am SO glad to hear so much frustration and hate towards Derek. That manchild haunted my nightmares with how stupid he was. Also his teeth freaked me out because they didn't go all the way to his mouth edge?? It felt so weird. This movie feels like an unfinished project they just hurried out. There feels like such a lack of explanation for events and reasonings.. Things just happened because they need to for the story to advance. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I wrote awful fanfics that were basically plot point to plot point speedruns and absolutely no "meat" to chew on. lmaooo The only other movie that I ever disliked entirely then became absolutely obsessed with for no reason was The Princess and The Goblin. That one at least felt like it had logical reasoning to it's world and characters. Happy (Belated) Birthday!!🎉

They had such a good concept because at that point, most Disney couples had known each other for a few days at most but we hadn't seen the main prince and princess grow up together. It could have been cute childhood enemies to lovers but we see that they only start to be interested in one another when they've matured enough to be considered attractive.

First of all, Happy Birthday!🎉 Thank you so much for the smiles and laughter your videos bring!💝 Second of all, this movie is one of my favorite childhood movies!! Me and my sisters used to watch it all the time on VHS (also the 2nd and 3rd one)! To this day we will still randomly start singing Far Longer Than Forever from time to time. I even baught it on DVD so I can watch it whenever. Looking back on it as an adult there are definitely some things I whished were different but it still has a special place in my heart❤ Also that crown with your hair looks amazing! Thank you for posting and happy (belated) birthday! Like you, I loved this movie as a little kid but became disenchanted with it watching it again in college. Knowing that it's not going to be top tier, though, there are still fun little bits scattered throughout. Not only did they steal the dancing in the clouds thing from Sleeping Beauty, they also stole the young prince meeting the infant princess/his future bride! We can only hope that was an unused boot on the "moose's" face. I like that you pointed out the animation - this movie has some of the best water splashes, for instance. And I've really gotten into the songs, lately. There are intimidating villain songs and there are fun villain songs, and Rothbart's is firmly in the latter camp! The footmen's intro to the ball is on the same track as "Princesses on Parade" (a favorite scene in childhood and now!) on the soundtrack. I love their snazzy dance moves. And my VHS had a music video for "Eternity" by Dreams Come True, which I LOVED (thank you TV Tropes - until a few months ago I could not remember the name of the song and so couldn't find the video. I was 99% sure it wasn't just a pop cover of "For Longer Than Forever").

I can tell you exactly what's worse than "is beauty all there is?" "What else is there?" And it's this. "Why do you want me?" "Because there's no one else who is willing to be with me or do anything with me. you're my only option." (Basically only settling for you bc they considered you literally their only option. There's no reason at all. Not even beauty. It's just they don't think they could get anyone else. So to them their settling for something they don't actually want bc they have no choice -_-)

As a Millennial guy who watched many animated movies as a kid, one of the few things I remembered about this movie was Lord Rothbart transforming himself into the Great Animal and fighting Derek. For all the movie's flaws, the battle was well done (albeit short), and Rothbart's Animal form was both pretty cool and unsettling. Honestly, here are moments that look like he could've come straight from an 80s Don Bluth flick.

why does everyone just forget the ending, its not that he just loved her for beauty, he just couldnt say it, he didn't just pull those traits out of a hat, was this movie perfect? no, it def could have been done better but Derek and Odettes love story is better than people give credit for PRINCE DEREK: Forgive me, Odette. Forgive me. I only wanted to break the spell. To prove my love. I love you for your kindness and courage... I always have.

What angers me about Swan Princess is that it makes some simple, yet effective changes to the story to “fix it” and make it logically consistent throughout. Yet, it fumbles the most basic and important one of all, thus negating the great strides made when adapting the story into movie format! Very little changes are required to make the story work much better!

The sidekicks in this movie remind me of how I feel about the Gargoyles from Hunchback, where only two of them serve a purpose and one is mostly annoying. In Hunchback, Victor and Laverne serve a purpose and Hugo is kinda annoying. In Swan Princess, Speed and Puffin are tolerable, and Jean Bob is annoying.

Gahhh the opening number is honestly such a great setup for a fun “learning how to love each other” plot. I wish they would’ve sprinkled in some instances of the two getting along to help with the mutual attraction later. Cause watching them as kids was so fun and felt real. Too bad they wrote Derek to be a dud, and Odette to have low standards.
@EverythingFan02
@EverythingFan02 Жыл бұрын
I wish this movie was better. The first act is pretty solid and has uncommon, for the time, character flaws for the male and female protagonists that all kids could still relate to and they both act like real kids and young adults. If This is My Idea was a bit slower and had an interlude that showed them actually bonding over or realizing their shared interests, both of them realizing they like each other could have been sweet. Derek being unable to express his feelings and Odette being disappointed and distant but civil in calling off the engagement, and later confiding in her father, and Derek vowing to prove his feelings and make it up to Odette, after the movie tries to make it clear that he loves her for her but just is horrible at expressing his feelings, are good character beats. But then the movie proceeds like none of this happened. Odette and Derek act like they were happily engaged before Odette was kidnapped. Which is even weirder because Odette is still pretty active and opinionated like she was in the beginning of the film and tries to save the situation herself multiple times. The songs also drop off. This Is My Idea established and progressed character, setting, and story while still being entertaining. Every song after becomes an exposition dump or an entertaining but pointless diversion from the plot.

I just rewatched this movie and honestly, I think most of the issues of this movie could have been solved with more character introduction. Like why does Odette know the animals already? To us, it seems like she’s only just met them. Also, I think them growing to love each other could also have been a lot better

Hi, new here. Your visceral hatred for Derek is hilarious. I personally, liked the side characters the best like Derek's mom and Jean Bob. I love the same songs you do too. There should be a story where Odette has a third option and he actually likes her for her personality not just her looks or the Kingdom.

Oh boy oh boy oh boyyyyyy I love this movie so much, INCLUDING DEREK 😂😂😂!!! He is pretty flawed in this one but i really do think he grows as a character and he does actually like Odette for more than looks cause in the song he gets jealous when Odette flirts with the guards and he's not attracted to her physically yet and they have spent years together so i don't believe he doesn't know anything about her, though i do wish we got to see more of their interactions! He is A lot better in the next few movies, and he's one of the only animated princes EVER to actually get any character development and that's got to count for something lol

I USED TO LOVE THIS MOVIE AS A KID. I always begged my dad to rent it from the video store for me haha. I think the character design and voice acting is good, but the story definitely has issues, and they should have made Derek go through character development. LIKE for example: He should have mourned Odette, and refused all the other princesses BEFORE he found her again. His mom or advisor could say "but they're beautiful aren't they? isn't that all that matters?" and make him have an epiphany about how Odette was different, and that he loved her for HER. Also makes no sense that Odette would sing a love song about him when their last interaction went so poorly.

I used to love this movie as a little girl. As an adult I wonder why I couldn't shake this thought that being ugly would make me invisible and unlovable and only my looks would make men want to love me. Then I watched this... "You're beautiful!" ok..... and? Well shit. Hello to my childhoold trauma that I didn't even see coming. "No more Mr Nice Guy" just sums of up the "Nice Guy" phenomenon in general. A dude who isn't really nice, but uses the excuse that being nice makes him a target for being walked all over so that he can justify being the jerk he has always been.

Three things that I disliked about the Derek character were one, he was selfish and kept going after Odette only because of her looks. He never apologized for his behaviour or his dumb answer. Two, the writers did a horrid character build-up between Derek and Odette, they don't even have feelings of "love" for each other they only cared for each as siblings /friends. Three, Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty did more to get to his soon-to-be bride by fighting the dragon and nearly dying in the process. Here in Swan Princess, Derek whines, cries, stands and pauses around instead of helping Odette out of the curse. Then we find out in the second movie that they are still getting to know each other! This is funny because they reuse the same character Rothbart. Instead of setting up the stakes for Derek and making him and Odette fight back against the new antagonist. The second solution could have been for the recent King and Queen could have married and let Derek and Odette be siblings. Then Derek meets another nice and smart Princess from another kingdom and the same for Odette, she could have met a handsome, smart and brave Prince or Knight. The story arc and characterization are all over the place. I love your reviews, Sophia! Thanks so much!

I feel like this movie could have been improved without Derek and Odette’s argument about what else is there to Odette. They could still have an argument about them not wanting to be together and see something is starting to change. Then have Odette be kidnapped and have them being apart make them both realize they’re in love. The sudden change in how they treat each other after the montage just feels really…off.
