8:06 Wait, what? Payne's Gray and Sepia are indeed not great colors to mix with others, but have you ever tried to mix them together? You get a beautiful concrete grey, a neutral warm grey, because payne's leans to the blue and sepia leans to the yellow. I've tried this with multiple brands and types, and not every mixture works out, but mixing Payne's Gray with Sepia is very interesting and promising!

I picked up Daniel Smith new gamboge, Phtholo blue, and Alizarin Crimson (all series 1)to add to my set of 12 white knights. I am in love with the new gamboge, and it's safe to say as I use up the rest of my White Knights, I will be replacing them with Daniel Smith.

Hope you get this. When you use up Alizarin Crimson, make sure and pick up PERMANENT Alizarin Crimson because it is more light fast. Both are offered from Daniel Smith.
@renmuffett5 жыл бұрын
Yes. The lowest priced pigments are often the most durable and light fast. The cost depends on what the paint suppliers have to pay to get the pigments. Some require much harder work and efforts. Its why all the Natural and synthetic Iron Oxides will have the lowest price tags. It is abundant and easy to get. The PY3 is not a durable yellow. Thanks for sharing.

Purples are always hard to get. At least a nice intense purple. Greens and oranges are easy so they are colors you can wait to buy or leave out of a palette. But if you use purple then having at least 1 that you can then tone down or mute as needed is a must

Very interesting! Didn't pay much attention to the series so far, but now I will! Though there are things I can't do without like Quin Rose, there's no true cool red in S1. I also prefer S2 Quin Burnt Orange (PO48) instead of Burnt Sienna. Discovered that if I also stash Nickel Azo Yellow (PY150) also S2 I can really make w/ them Quin Gold (PO48+PY150), this with PB29 gives one Undersea green, or with Phthalo Blue Sap Green :D Payne's grey is really PB29 plus some black, Sepia is Burnt Sienna (or in my case Quin Burnt Orange) with some black, & I chose Lunar Black (PBk11) because it's granulating & all combinations are really nice. So while I might not budge on some things, Lemon yellow, Ultramarine Blue are worth looking at & MAN Sienna because I don't like Raw Sienna or Yellow Ocher much. Prussia Blue is S1 as well, was thinking to replace Phthalo Blue. Hmmm... overall very enlightening! Finally dawned on me what those numbers on the DS-259WColor_Chart are :D

Daniel Smith has 120 Series 1 colors total, although 48 of those are luminescent and a good number are yellows, phthalos and earth colors. Lightfast reds unfortunately are usually higher series, but Permanent Red is a very useful mixing red. Deep Scarlet looks beautiful, I may get that when I run out of Perylene Scarlet. Awesome video, thanks Teoh!

This was a really interesting video, thank you! I have Manganese Blue Hue on my palette and really enjoy using it. In my experience, it has nice granulation in mixes, but needs to be used with a lot of water. I'd like to try PY175 and the Monte Amiata Natural Sienna, I'll have to add them to my wishlist. I prefer Transparent Red Oxide to Burnt Sienna, because I think it has better tinting strength.
@patriciabarbosa36565 жыл бұрын
How can I tell if some color it is warm or cold, for exemplo between 2 yellows or 2 blues? That deep Scarlet it's so beautiful.
@hansendesigns5 жыл бұрын
Patrícia Barbosa you look to see if the color leans toward another warmer or cooler primary (or secondary). if a yellow looks more orange (toward red) its warmer, if it leans toward green/blue it's cooler. The direction a color leans will effect the way it makes secondary colors. For instance, if you had a blue that leans toward Red, and a red that leans toward blue, they would both lean toward each other so they will make a nice purple. :)
@teohyc5 жыл бұрын
It's a relative comparison. You can use the colour wheel to help. Colours nearer to red would be warm and blue cool. Colours that are close to each other on the wheel will mix to produce vibrant colours.

Very interesting video. Perhaps, M Graham or other brand paints will work out cheaper with a better choice of colors. Or go cheap with a great choice of 6 - 8 colors from any series of Daniel Smith. I doubt if a warm yellow is necessary since orange is not picky to be mixed form which red and yellow. And a cool yellow is rarely needed unless it's the specific super artificial cool bright green that you ask for. A Primary yellow is versatile. PV 19 would create bright red and lovely violet . Only if you're asking for a specific vivid scarlet should you have one scarlet like PO 73.

Love the video, so useful! Other than the reds, I like every paint listed. Anyone could select a decent palette from this. I'd just add a good red as an extra investment, a Quinacridone - good cool red maybe. I personally would go with PY175, Hansa Deep, Monte Amiata, (Quin Rose), (Transparent Pyrrol Orange), Undersea or Cascade Green, Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine, Phthalo Turquoise maybe?, Transparent Red and Brown oxides. And perhaps Lunar Black or Payne's Gray for neutrals. If you get an introductory Daniel Smith set, you'd just have to add some earth, green and neutral hues in 5ml and you'd be good to go - this may be the most cost-effective way with good reds included.
