We got an electric outboard (Torquedo) on our winter cruise last year. It is absolutely great in relatively flat water and not to long a distance. The ease of getting the electric motor on and off the dinghy makes it sooooo much easier! That said, I'm not giving up on my 9.8hp outboard! The electric simply doesn't have anywhere near the powerboat the gas motor. It can't get the dinghy on a plane and if we ever have to anchor in a large and/or rougher anchorage - I want the power and range of my gas motor. But for quick stops and getting Tuxedo to the nearest beach - the Torquedo can't be beat! 😀 Enjoy the ePropulsion - but you may want to have a regular outboard as well! 😉

I agree. When you only have to take yourself to near by shore and back, I suppose the electric motor is ok. If you actually must do something with your dinghy the electric motor is useless. You might have to give a push to another boat or take a long line to shore. You might even have to tow your own vessel some ime etc.

I have an ePro Spirit 1.0 for my Colgate 26 (apx 1180 kg). It can get the boat up to 5.5 kts. I've been using it for about a year and absolutely will be using one on a future dinghy for a future liveaboard. We had a 15hp Mercury on our previous Highfield 310, and it was perfectly fine. But dealing with gasoline was a pain. It was incredibly rare that I ever needed more than harbor speed in that boat, so don't think I'll need that much power in the future either.

electric outboard is wonderful. Sunsail provides them on flotilla. So much easier to lift off the yacht into the tender

I also bought one of those electric outboard motors. While there are pros and cons, my #1 reason was to get gasoline off of the boat. My wife is VERY concerned about fire, and gasoline is something best not had on a boat. And the #2 reason is to not have a mechanical engine to care for and HOPE it starts. I won't miss that anxiety one bit.

Love the concept of electric outboard for a tender especially no need for petrol on board. I do wonder though for a cruiser there will be times when you need to go a reasonable distance to provision or whatever and you will want something that can get your dinghy planing.

Definitely no planing with the electric outboard. But at slow speeds range is up near 8 miles I think.

wery dangerous not having a dingy not able to move the modership, or go long distanse/time if needed. i have a elektrik and a 6 hp petrol and the el is just for play or small jobs around the boat, i really hate the noice of the petrolengine but there is no alternative at the moment 😎 i really love the new boat ❤ looking forward to see how it will perfom. 🇳🇴 S/V Shanty.

The simplicity and utopian plug and play, twist and go dream you show of using an electric outboard is great however one of the biggest issues that no one talks about with electric outboards is charging them whilst underway! we already have ever increasing high demands on power generation on board from and a limited output of Solar, alternators or worse a gen set so being able to charge them up whilst on passage was the challenge I had

Yes we’re planning a live aboard update later on here in the Caribbean. Luckily we have a gigantic battery bank so don’t worry about recharging capacity.

I suppose it would depend on how much you need. If you have enough solar to generate a surplus you can always charge it with a trickle over a few days, if you use the tender daily then it could be an issue but if your underway for a several day passage it should be charged up by the time you get there. A 1200 watthour battery should be able to charge in a day or so off a 200w solar panel depending on how good the day is for solar and panel alignment. probably 7 hours if everything is ideal, probably 2 solar days if the panel is just mounted flat and your getting intermittent shading or clouds.

in our case, when we arrange an mmsi (vhf and flag registration) , we already ask the necessary questions, so an epirb with mmsi is already sufficient. (because we know most people forget to fill a form like that..) As for the electric outboard. I do not see how this can ever be sufficient in remote locations

It all boils down to generating capacity. If you have enough generating capacity, electric is actually superior to a gas powered tender, since you never have to worry about getting more fuel. However, I wouldn't run the main boat without a way to store an enormous amount of energy, enough to limp to safety from the middle of an ocean. 1 liter of Diesel fuel contains about 11 kWh of energy. To limp home the same distance as a boat with a 1000l Diesel tank, you'd have to carry 11 MWh of batteries. Currently not doable, as that would be about 20 tons in batteries alone, not to mention the cost.

There are so many electric motors available now of all powers .. the Metts boat show has an entire exibition of E power options.. from tiny 0.5hp wand ot blade type outboards to huge super slimline 600hp jobs then theres pod motors and rimdive impeller pods and retracting fixed and rotating auxilary motors in enclosed pods .. Which are safer for swimers and marine life . Then theres even more variety in the inboard motors and hybrid drive systems.. Generally the higher torque Of a e outboard will allow it to perform more akin to a larger gas motor.. Battery tech has taken some quantum leaps in the past year or two and the availability, safety and life expetancy of new cells and batteries has increased but the cost is reducing rapidly. CATLs 2nd generation Li Fe phosphate blade and prism cells are expected to reduce in price by 50%this year as they are ditching Li ion and Li NMC batteries for automotive propulsion because they are safer longer lasting have greater temp tollerance and longer life spans. They also dont need the expensive metals. A properly designed and propped e motor of 20kw power will perform mor like a 26-30hp diesel in terms of thrust delivery and should remain virtually maintainance free. It will also be lighter and far more compact generating very little heat or noise. The battery packs can be switched with some or housed in the boat just connected by a watertight lead...akin to a onboard fuel tank but safer...and easier.

I think your tender is underpowered with that electric motor. However, more power and more batteries is also heavier... Have you considered OceanCraft with their electric jet tender? That looks like an actually good option, IMHO.

I like electric motors on sailboat, but I can't say same for dinghy. It's just not powerful enough. Even though many people say otherwise, electric motor on sailboat, is good enough with power and range, as long as you have generator too. Maybe not optimal, but good enough. But with dinghy it just isn't. But like you if I was doing ultimate go anywhere vessel, I would go for parallel hybrid setup. But otherwise I think I would be perfectly content with just electric motor and dc generator. It would just reduce maintenance and make electricity generation better. (generators generally should be more reliable than engine, and dc generator even more so). Also you would only need one throttle and engine system.

We loved our ePropulsion Spirit for all the reasons you said, UNTIL the connection corroded. There is no way to clean the corrosion and you need to replace the plug. Terrible design for salt environment, and no warranty support after the first year. Same connection used on Torqeedo, BTW. Keep your gas outboard.

very limited wet slip spots avail in the USA when they find out you are using electric propulsion. Leak currents from electric power make marina waters very dangerous... Major marina liability. Not suggesting e-outboards make it worse but the fear consensus is that anything electric makes the issue worse so the marinas often deny access.

Strange. We had not heard this and the move in Europe is to disallow boats with fuel engines in many places, instead welcoming electric propelled vessels. We will definitely investigate this. Has anyone else had experience with this?

I strongly recommend you stay away from any UK river. The previous government in the UK let the water company release raw sewage into the rivers, the current government has only been in power half a year and hasn't fixed this problem, so you'll still get loads of raw sewage in the rivers. So stay well away from the rivers in the UK.

Obviously you guys haven’t watched ‘sophisticated Lady’, electric outboard isn’t the solution, as of yet! Rick’s huge argument against it, was the unpredictability of the remaining power. It varies way too much on load carrying and sea! He went after only a short time back to his noisy gasoline outboard! Electric is just not a solution, as of yet! Epirb on the other hand is a MUST and it needs to be registered properly! Also it needs to be mounted outside, because it will automatically activate if your boat sinks and you are unable to switch it on manually! There are still many mounted inside the boat, a fatal mistake!

Not quite right there mate, the epirb needs to be in your hands if you are going down, it’s no good marking where the boat sank, it needs to be with the crew on the life raft , if the rescue services are hours away they may not find you. Ours was in a hydrostatic box down below, now it’s just by the companionway on a bracket ready to grab, safest way for us by far.
