Simon does battle with Mounted Archery 3 - a completely crazy puzzle by AFrayedKnot. This puzzle is not "approachable" at all but it is brilliant fun!! You can play it here:
app.crackingth...
Rules:
Normal Sudoku rules apply. Circled digits must equal the sum of the digits on their attached arrow. Cells separated by a knight's move (in chess) may not contain the same digit. Bifurcation is not necessary!

I'm an intermediate solver at best and have never even considered setting a puzzle but since day one I've allways believed that if I could set a puzzle this is EXACTLY the puzzle I would want to set. @@afrayedknot81 No, sorry I misread your post. I used middle and low digits and the three horizontal arrows in boxes 2, 5 and 8. Considering the low orange digit in r5c5 there was one low and one middle digit left to place on each of the three arrows.

How 'bout the following, saving me from any sneakiness :) ? At 45:28, the position of 6 in c4 is restricted to r1, r2, r4, because r5 or r9 would make the arrow sums too big. Hence r3c6 has to be 5.

I like the times he says things like "maybe I should just try some sudoku now" or "maybe I'm missing some sudoku" or even just "by sudoku" with a tone that seems to blend resignation, annoyance, bewilderment, and even something bordering contempt. "Oh bobbins; the really clever logic stuff seems to have run out now. Suppose I better get back to 'business as usual'." I find it funny and humbling that (as someone who still struggles with regular, classic sudoku) Simon seems to find the logic embedded in 'normal sudoku rules apply' as something like merely doing the washing up after cooking an exquisite banquet. If the channel was called 'Cracking the Sudoku' this would probably irritate me a little. But it isn't, and it doesn't. I love it. 😁

I stumbled across this channel during lockdown (original flavour) and have been amazed by these videos ever since. It's quite rare that I can see all the logic needed to get the ball rolling and this puzzle fell into that category. I am so grateful that these videos not only get past the break in but explain it. Seeing all of the colourful logic that followed was incredibly exciting, especially the way that Simon goes around the houses and finds the same conclusion I did with acrobatics that reveal some other secret that I would've missed for a while. Even though I didn't get this one myself the power of this puzzle, the set up of all the colours leading to the acceleration from 0 digits to solved in 45 seconds, it's the most excited I've felt with sudoku. This puzzle was truly special and something I would likely not have been able to experience without this channel. Thanks for making all these lockdowns easier to get through!

This puzzle is incredible. There are several places where you can use certain sums that can't happen to rule out possibilities. at about 35:00, the blue in r2c5 can't be orange plus purple, so the orange in box 2 has to be in c6. At 42:00, the purple in r8c1 can't be black plus dark grey, which lets you place the black in r7. I'm sure there are other spots like this I didn't see.... Lovely. Edit: Oops, should have waited for Simon to notice that purple. :D

@@owen_fritts3767 In general it's when instead of using logic to determine the next move you just pick a spot for a number from its current possibilities and then follow it along the solve path to see if you create an impossible situation, which would tell you that this was the wrong choice. The difference between this, which Mark sometimes does (as do most competitors in high level contests), and Simon just talking through things 3-4 moves ahead, is a bit fuzzy to me. I think it is meant to mostly be a running gag between the two of them.

@@owen_fritts3767 It basically means “guess and check” which is a strategy that Simon does not like to use. Suppose that you know that a cell can only have two digits, say 1 and 2. If you guess 2 and you check how that affects the rest of the board and eventually come to something impossible, the 2 was wrong so it must be 1.

I finished this mostly on my own taking a few hints from your video as I went. It's a really beautiful puzzle. I love how it makes you solve the entire puzzle for ranges, then lets you reduce those ranges to individual numbers. You really just have to accept that frayed not isn't going to give you any numbers until the end and settle for abstract symbols (i.e. colours) for the entire solve. Instead of finding the numbers to solve the sudoku, you're solving the sudoku so you can find the numbers.

This puzzle is definitely one of the best puzzles I have ever seen in this channel. I am proud of being able to solve it myself. I have sent a puzzle with exactly the same rule set and no given digits to CTC but it did not appear in the channel. After solving this puzzle, I understand that my puzzle was not that clever. This puzzle has a very elegant solution. The way it is solved is absolutely amazing. Man! How did you construct this puzzle? It is complete madness. By the way, I did not watch Simon yet. Now, it’s time to watch Simon’s lovely demonstration of how to solve the puzzle.

Despite still not really looking at the extra content yet, I did this a while back now, and it's definitely worth it. On the one hand, I feel a warm glow about supporting the channel. It gives me more entertainment every day than entire movie download would, but paying less per month than a single daily film would be. On the other hand, the extra content is there when I do eventually feel confident enough to genuinely have a go at the extra puzzles. On the other hand, I've plegded to give up a few beers or packets of crisps a month to cover the cost. This time next year I'll be the healthiest person on the planet. Win-win. And on the other hand, you have four hands. Which is a bit odd. I probably should start colouring them in, so I can easily pair them up with all four feet...

If I understand what you're saying, I think you'd want both the lower-end and upper-end. So '4-9', which is still shorter than '456789', but also gives the option of '4-8' when you can rule out the '9'.

it would be nice if the software would allow you to add letters rather than just numbers both as digits and as pencil marks. Then you could use letters instead of colors and have letter pencil marks. I guess you'll still need to write down a reminder which letters can be which digits, which is another useful feature. This can also help with letter-coded puzzles. In any case, great solve!

The trick i use for these kind of coloring puzzles is to use numbers as placeholders. you know 4 5 and 6 are yellow red grey, so just assign each a number. Then you can go through the grid using the normal corner and center markings, which probably allows you to deduce some new colored squares. Once you can find no more new numbers just remove the numbers but leave the coloring, and you can move on with the arrows again.
