As I Kiwi living overseas it brings such peace watching your videos. I grew up in small town NZ with many nights staying on farms and the chilly dew filled winter mornings with nothing but the sound of 100 birds brings back such good memories.

Hey Carrie! Be careful of utilising untreated pine for shelves in the laundry cupboard without giving it a coating to protect from borer damage. It won't matter for a year or 2, but in NZ borer LOVE pine and will eat it up eventually :) Loving the your content, always a nice wholesome thing to watch while I work

I think we all know the real reason all the shelves are labelled. Right Alex? 😂 Also the office (so far) looks fab! And solar with a battery makes soooo much sense! Bank as much as you can during the summer for use in the winter 👍

I know exactly what you mean about power outages, I think it can be nice to put our modern habits aside and be forced to do something simple and cozy for a little while. The house is coming along beautifully!

The problem with going Off Grid is that you will need enough solar capacity (panels and battery storage) to generate enough electricity on a damp winter day to get you through a winter night. That means a large investment for a system which for the most part will exceed your needs (particularly in the summer). Alternatively, you could stay connected to the grid and sell any excess back to the electricity company. If your system has a battery, then you could also use it for power in an emergency.

I'm probably going off grid when I move next year, but it'll likely be wind power. A wind powered generator can produce much more power than solar with less maintenance. I'm going to check it out at the home show in Auckland in September. The other benefit of wind is it works 24/7 in any weather, even very light wind that you can't feel on the ground and it takes very little turning of the generator to produce power whereas solar won't produce at night and is less efficient on cloudy days. Something to consider. PS. You can add solar to it for those very very still days. Lavo in Australia have come up with a brilliant system that doesn't use batteries. It's runs on water, which it converts to hydrogen, which produces electricity. But it's still pretty new and costs a bomb!

I feel the same way about candlelight, it’s so cozy! However, our power seems to go mostly when it’s 85 degrees or above, so being without power for very long can be absolutely miserable. I am so thankful we have a gas stove because you can still use it when the power goes out, you just have to light it with a match. I’m excited to see the final reveal of your office, I know you and Alex will make it look great!

Adding rocks is a bad idea for plants. It raises the water table in the pot and will make your roots sit in wetness. That can lead to root rot pretty easily, especially in a pot with no drainage. Don’t mean to be pedantic lol just want to share the knowledge!
