This makes me want an open world game like fallout and elder scrolls, but if go off the maps edge it wraps around so you end up on the other side like Pacman with lore reasons, you could even cut out fast travel. Have the very center be the primary hub and starting point, have a teleport system that only goes to the hub and back.
