A 23-YEAR-OLD woman with severe cystic acne has learned to embrace her skin after sharing her story on social media. Grace Nesbitt, from Philadelphia, has suffered with cystic acne since she was in high school. But after years of struggling with her self-image, she has shared her story on social media and gone out bare-faced for the first time, in order to inspire others to find inner confidence. Grace, who works as a stylist, says that her acne is so severe that she struggles to leave the house, as well as being unable to eat or smile without being in pain.

I wish acne didn't exist. It just causes depression and social anxiety. And why must most of it be on the face! I can't even talk to people without thinking "Omg, are they staring at my acne?!" And looking people in the eye is a struggle as well. I try so many face washes and acne medicines and topicals but nothing works.

omfg... exactly what I think all the time. It is true that it is normal for teens and even adults to have bad breakouts or acne. But the 2 schools I went too, NOBODY had bad acne, and if someone did, it was a guy with nice features anyway (and breakouts on guys just feel more.. normal? :c mby coz they usually have this "don't care" look) or a girl with nice features AND good at applying makeup.

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!! i literally just left a comment about friends who used to complain about their little bumps on their face that they considered a nuisance. Low key used to get really pissed off, like exaggerated pist because they would complan but meanwhile i was dealing with the most severe flair ups. You and me would get along. People are so insensitive. I had HORRIBLE flare ups of acne and my friends would complain about their 1 mini pimple that didn't even have a white head.

I think this is where I could finally tell people to stop asking a person with acne breakouts with: "what happened to your face?" it's not helping really, you all may think it's comforting and shows that you care but it's not! Please! Not asking and just ignoring what you see is already a big help... Just acting like you don't see anything on their face at all is way better... Just act normal when talking to them cause it makes them feel that they look normal.

“Wash your face” Okay. Let’s settle this. People with acne wash their faces constantly. They use all these creams and face treatments and face masks to help get rid of the acne. They try everything. Washing your face in hot water, cold water, they even put toothpaste on the acne because sometimes that helps! Never bully somebody for acne, its not something you can control. Even if you have clear skin, every now and then you get some pimples. So don’t judge somebody to make yourself feel better. We’re all human. We all have feelings and insecurities.

Eat healthy (Stop eating crap) 6. Lessen makeup 7. Properly clean off makeup if u do apply some 8. Stop touching ur face... (use a clean cloth or tissue to clean ur face, don't rub! Pat gently.) 9. Wash ur face twice a day and moisturize (aloe vera moisturizer works best coz it heals acne scars) 10. Avoid or lessen soy, wheat, milk, gluten, sugar, avocado, nuts, and processed foods. 11. I don't like bragging because it's absolutely disrespectful and pushy towards people who do have acne and I don't exactly have acne just to say, but too people who do have acne. I know it might be really painful and other stuff but you're still beautiful in the inside I know looks may matter to many people in the world but again you're still beautiful. It's just some people are so obsessed with beauty nowadays that they don't see what a person is on the inside.

This girl has nothing to be ashamed of. She's beautiful and humble, and it shows, with or without acne. I also have an acne prone skin, had been on accutane and literally everything. We need to embrace ourselves and understand that we don't have to hide in our rooms and be ashamed of acne or scarring. We did nothing wrong and we did not choose to have acne prone skin. It's not our fault. And the society should understand that!!

She is stunning and so incredibly brave! I've never had the severity of her acne, but I have had really bad acne at various points in my life. I've been to several dermatologists, tried all sorts of creams and antibiotics. So far what's worked best for me is trial and error. Finding what products my skin loves, changing my diet, going on birth control and finding out what types of things can break me out (dyes from clothes, shampoos, types of makeup, foods). I'm starting to see some stability in my skin since I've cut out dairy, but that doesn't hide the scars and insecurities I get over the occasional breakout. Stay strong girl, I cannot wait for the day where you find the cause of your acne!

To people who just say, "ohh just wash your face and stay clean", I'm really happy that you don't have to go through what someone with acne past 20-years-old has to go through because it really sucks. Anyone suffering from acne problems into their 20s/30s does NOT wish their problems upon others; they just want theirs to go away. I'm glad there are plenty of people who don't have to deal with this. Telling someone to wash their face is the same as someone telling someone short to, "just eat more food." YES food has a correlation with growing, and YES clean face has a correlation with a clear face, but until you accept that fact that people are BORN differently, you're just going to look stupid and ignorant. Sometimes washing your face doesn't fix your problem, the same way how eating more or less food doesn't always fix a weight/height problem. PEOPLE ARE BORN DIFFERENTLY.

I'm in my early 30s and I had acne until recently. The usual benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid never really worked for me. Personally, the only things that worked for me was getting professionally done chemical peels for acne and retinol creams. Retinol does work on some people for acne, but it might not work on everyone just like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid won't work on everyone. Keep trying, don't give up. You're worth it.

To the people who have Acystic Acne I had it too , I want to tell u what worked for me. It was not the strong meds or acne ointments cause I did go to a specialist so I’m a Christian & I prayed about it & I felt the Lord was telling me it was the meats & birds so I stopped eating all meat & eggs & within months acne started leaving now I just have acne scars left not the huge red bumps I had before. So I did my own research & did find they are putting variety of things in our meats like hormones, antibiotics, chemicals & I have to be be careful what I eat, it’s been over a year now & I have survived not eating meats like I used to, I do eat Fish though & im fine. I eat Vegetables & rice pasta salads all sorts foods but no meats like chicken beef pork chops steak cause that’s what I would usually eat , so I say just try it for a month & don’t eat Cheese & Meats for couple of months & see what happens. Having acystic acne changed the way I eat, but I don’t even miss meats anymore, I did recently try start eating slice turkey 1 week & I was ok but I haven’t eaten that again for a while since that 1 week. Now after not eating meat for year my face looks more clear & back to normal the redness is gone , the itching& pain on my face is gone & the big cystic acne is gone too if I break out now it’s very tiny ones so I hope this helps someone to check what your eating u could be having allergic reaction to eating something & this how ur body is telling u something is wrong, for me it was only on my face. It was one worst experience but taught me how eat better. Take care

Doxy and mino only buy time. The acne comes back when you stop taking them, which you have to eventually since they are antibiotics. I've struggled with acne my whole life and after trying everything, I eventually settled on spironolactone, Aztec Indian healing clay mask, and oddly enough, botox every few months. Botox decreases the oil production or something. Spiro adjusts your hormone level. My skin is great now.

People that give the simple advice for severe acne are so annoying. I went through that for years. They don’t get it’s more so internal! You can put as much topical creams on, wash your face 5 times a day, drink water all day etc. and it doesn’t work. It’s something bigger than those things. I had acne from 11-22 years old, it would itch, hurt, scar, peel WHATEVER. I started Spiro (androgen blocker), Ortho Tricyclen, and Retin A cream and over a years time, my hormones are controlled and my acne is gone. I hope Grace gets to the bottom of what’s causing her cystic acne and takes control of it. 💕 Goodluck Grace!! You’re truly admired by me and a lot of other people. Thanks for sharing your story!

i have lots of acnes than her, i feel sooo ugly and i can't face a single person, even my friends. so i always hide my face with my hair or handkerchief. but now, i still do have lots of it. but i've learned how to accept myself. i don't have to be pretty to live normally, with or without it, i'm still pretty enough. if others don't like your face, then let them be, just think like you know it and you don't care. your face is not the basis of your whole personality. always remember that even though you have flaws and insecurities in your body, you're still beautiful. don't let that acnes, blackheads, pores and whatsoever ruin your life. i know that feeling when you searched a lot on how to remove this and that, how to gain or lose weight, etc. but the best remedy i know is that to think positive and believe that everything will be alright. and again, you're beautiful.

From a male point of view...agreed. I've been attracted to women with severe acne and the only thing that grosses me out is when they cake makeup all over it. Because then you see this one color with a weird texture underneath, it's the feeling that something is being covered up that bothers me. But if it's just a condition then sure, it is what it is.

Acne has ruined my self confidence too. I used to have really clear skin up until I went to college and started breaking out like crazy! I wa so super confident when I started college too, the first month I was finally happy. But then after a few months I just slowly became depressed and anti social and not wanting to interact with anybody because I feel like they'd judge me when they'd look at me skin. It hurts, it really does. Now I am left with so many acne scars and newer breakouts and even though if is ruining my self confidence, I made a decision to not cover them and go to school with my head held high because at the end of the day, people don't really care about acne. It's not something in your control to get rid of magically. I realised my friends were still my friends and that gives me a bit of confidence after all.

The same thing happened to me! I’ve had hormonal acne as an adult for about 6 years. It was super frustrating because nothing I tried ever worked for very long, but last year I picked up a book on how diet can affect your skin and it was life changing. Now there are certain foods that I avoid (which are not the same for everyone, but for me are soy, corn, eggs, and dairy) and my skin has cleared up so much. Getting regular facials also helped. Hope you’re able to find the right solution for your acne soon!

This girl is a true inspiration. I had problematic skin with acne for many many years of my life, and what really helped me the most (beyond praying) was Korean skincare, finding that my skin wasn’t just very oily, but dehydrated, adding niacinamide serum in my skincare which really changed my skin, led light therapy (I bought Lightstim for acne), and of course taking care of my diet (no sugar, no dairy, no smoke or alcohol, but lots of vegetables and fibers), exercising almost daily, vitamin b supplements made for pcos, and vitamin d. Hope this can help, good luck to all of you!

It's ironic because that's so invalid even for more reasons than just that. Depending on skin type, for many people, washing so much as every other day or more could actually _cause_ acne because it removes the natural protective oils from the skin and will cause your pores to produce excess oils and flare up as an autonomic response. My mom used to make me wash my face everyday as a kid and only when I stopped doing it did I realize it was causing me to get pimples. The same applies even now, if I wash my face every other day or more often then I'll get pimples. If I leave it as it is and only gently rinse in the shower or use a light cleanser every few days then I have naturally clear skin. Suggesting for people to just wash their face is really bad advice!

I had pretty bad acne on my face, neck, chest, and shoulders for several years of puberty and yeah, it's painful and wrecks your self-esteem. Waking up to blood on the sheets and pillow was especially depressing. This was years ago for me though, back in the late 90's, and I haven't had any issues since and *most* of the scars are gone. I did try medication once but it made my skin too sensitive to light and made me even more uncomfortable so I didn't keep it up. I was lucky to grow out of it and only have the odd white head or full on pimple once or twice a year. The thing to remember is when you talk about it many of us can relate because we either have or have had similar experiences. This is a common problem and you're not alone.

Even though I still get comments on how I have scars etc but I know how much my skin has improved. btw the new tarte skin products have helped reduce my acne and maybe my cystic acne since the usage of this product I don't have it all up my cheeks.

@@dunkeyrumpus i'd just like to note, diet can have some affect on acne. it is different for everyone. sometimes it's genetic, hormonal, poor hygiene, poor dietary choices, or a combination (which it usually is). as someone who suffered from severe cystic acne for 3 years, dairy products really flared mine up. certain probiotics, topical treatments, and dietary changes did help my acne and can for others (though certainly not always), and should definitely never be discredited. ultimately, accutane cured my acne completely (now been acne free for about a year) since i wasn't devout enough to strictly eating no dairy/gluten as a teenager. but until you've dealt with it yourself or know from someone who is certified in health coaching (being my mother, who helped me tremendously), don't comment on something you are seemingly uninformed on.
