@doperagu8471
@doperagu8471 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I think people that are against cohabitation and/or sex before marriage are far more likely to enter into the marriage with an idea that divorce is never an option. And they most likely also have family/friends/circles that would also heavily look down on you for getting a divorce. Whereas those who have no problem with cohabitation and/or sex before marriage, and their family/friends/circles are far less likely to judge you for getting a divorce. Obviously, anyone entering into marriage never does so hoping for it to end in divorce. But I do think that the knowing it's an acceptable option for yourself, AND also knowing that you most likely won't be judged (or god forbid, go to hell or something) for having a divorce by those closest to you, will cause an elevation in divorce rates. But elevated divorce rates aren't always a bad thing. If you're in a bad marriage, an abusive marriage, a loveless marriage, or just a marriage that no longer makes you happy - then divorce isn't a bad thing! Before divorce was more socially acceptable (or even legal for the woman to bring forth), I'm sure that there were many people trapped in awful marriages that made them terribly unhappy. And I'm sure that this is the same for a lot of people who still feel trapped in marriages bc of social/religious constraints. Just bc the divorce rate may be lower among religious communities for example, doesn't mean they have a rate of happier marriages.

You're right. I believe there were studies done on cohabitation and divorce and they asked the participants the reasons why they cohabitated. Couples who cohabitated for practical reasons had a significantly lower divorce rate than couples who lived together as a trial run for marriage. I also think they found that moving in together after engagement wasn't a significant divorce risk either. It really does seem to come down to your attitudes towards relationships and divorce that seem to be the biggest factors.

Replacing the personality with a constructed one useful to the in-group is what makes a cult a cult. The methods by which this is done is outlined in the BITE model for assessing cult-like traits in social groups which broadly group the methods of control under the headings of Behavior control, Information control, Thought control, and Emotional control (with special emphasis on limiting outside influences and reinforcing in-group/out-group distinctions). Sound familiar to the far end of conservatism and fascism? Btw, the creator of the BITE model has also described Trump as a "steriotypical cult leader"

The whole "I'm this except for when x" actually isn't stupid, the examples mentioned here may be stupid, "vegetarian except on one specific day of the week" and "I'm not a murderer except for the time I murdered someone" aren't strange to say because the entire premise of saying you never/always do something, followed by an exception to the rule, those things are strange to say because they generally imply things about someone's moral convictions. Vegetarians/vegans (not all of them, but they're known for this) generally avoid meat because they believe it is immoral to eat meat. And non-murderers generally have a belief that it is immoral to murder people. So the idea of being a "non murderer" carries the implication, although it's not technically in the definition, that someone is against murder from a moral standpoint, so them making a seemingly random exception is unintuitive. "I play all my PC games on steam, unless they're exclusive to other stores" is an entirely coherent statement that *does* contain potentially useful information, as it tells you that this person prefers steam to the other stores on PC, even if they're willing to go to other platforms when they have to.

The world isn’t a clean place things don’t fall into neat categories. are you still a vegetarian if eat meat once by accident? What about how we constantly breathe the dead skin cells that flak off of us and the people around us. some of them make it to our stomachs. So in that way we are all omnivorous and canables as well? I say that I’m vegetarian instead of I’m vegetarian except for once when I was 6 I accidentally had pork at a hotel. Because the other is practical. Think it really comes down to how useful and consistent a detail is. So if someone else ate meat on only one day of the week then that person would be a vegetarian most of the time and referring to themselves as such on 6/7 days would be useful

If you label yourself as a vegetarian but are counting down the days to Sunday (meat day) each and every week while also dreading Monday (the start of your veggie week) then you're not a vegetarian.

The husband is a fairly close friend of mine so I know they get along very well and seem to love each other (I say seem because I never thought of asking him this lmao. Don't think it's tactful). Thanks for that note on separate sleeping! I've expressed repeatedly that I absolutely *cannot* stay asleep when someone else is in bed with me... Seriously, like I wake up every fifteen minutes or so and am awake for about that long before I can briefly fall back asleep. My girlfriend *loves* sleeping in the same bed so I'll do it to humor her occasionally but seriously I can't go that many nights without practically any sleep. And laying in bed half awake for seven hours trying not to disturb the other person isn't *fun.* I mentioned at one point that she tends to shift toward me in her sleep and it makes it harder and harder for me to stay asleep as she does so, and she giggled and said yeah, she wakes up and does that on purpose because she wants to cuddle. I think she thinks it's cute but imo it's literally the worst thing about our relationship 😭 Because it's "normal" for couples to want to sleep in bed together I feel weird expressing my issues with it. But some people like myself just have a hard time sleeping in the same bed as another person.

Polyamory specifically throws me off because in practice it always ends up being a demoralizing experience for anyone outside the primary couple. There is no "equality". Most people who are poly literally rank their partners by level importance but then also try to say they love them too? Seems kind of contradictory to me, seems kinda like people only do it so they have someone to emotionally fall back on if they lose the partner that they ACTUALLY care about, even if it doesn't benefit the other person in any way and they're just being used.

What about with asexual people, then? There are plenty of ace people that aren't sexually attracted to their partners and have a healthy romantic relationship. Of course, it's good to make sure sexual needs line up on all ends of a relationship, if that's what you mean, but you can have a relationship that isn't based on sexual attraction. Generally, I would say romantic attraction + being able to interact and communicate properly with a prospective partner is the most important aspect of a relationship, then followed by sexual attraction.

I had an ex-boyfriend like the second scenario - constant walls of text, wanted to call or voice-chat every day, and if FOR WHATEVER REASON I didn't answer back fast enough or at all that day he would be like "Are you mad at me?" or "Did I do something wrong?" Even when I told him over and over again nothing was wrong, that I was busy that day or I went to bed early, he was still upset. It was clingy and annoying. I did eventually break up with him in part because of this, and even when I said I wanted to cut off communication he would reach out via every app I was on. He even went through my dad on Facebook! Finally, he was blocked on everything and he has left me (and my family) alone. That man had serious issues (like a possessive attitude, co-dependent actions) and I am glad I got away. I think the chick in the reddit post (assuming OP didn't exaggerate anything) is kind of clingy. Hopefully they can have a sit-down and a serious conversation about their communication styles and how they can check in with each other. Boundaries are healthy and good, and hopefully they can be implemented.

The advice really wasn't that bad, I was on board with most of it. Calm down, Vaush, this ain't it, chief

The reason most people can’t function in none monogamous relationships besides people being weird about sex is that monogamous relationship have been forced on us by the church and the church is also the reason we have a weird relationship with sex and sexuality.

"It's important to try a lot of different people to make sure you're maximizing your happiness points and aren't settling for what might be sub market equilibrium happiness. This doesn't just go for romantic relationships. I'd urge everyone to try spending Christmas without their parents at least once, even if you think you love them, to make sure that you're not acting sub-optimally out of inertia or cultural norms."

Vaush I think you definitely should explore polyamory or even open relationships and cohabitation vs monogamy stats. I'd love to hear your views!! Your views at the end are wonderfully thought provoking.
