I think the point about Tyrion having a “terrible childhood” is meant to be contrasted with the fact that the immediate next line is him ordering a servant for a very specific breakfast, without so much as saying please, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world A key aspect of Tyrion’s character is that he likes to pity himself and monologue to himself about how bitterly unfair his life is… but it’s not. He isn’t just highborn, he’s a *Lannister,* a scion of one of the richest families in the world with access to wealth and power that 99% of people don’t have, never mind dwarves. Was Jaime really the only person in his childhood who was nice to him? Or does he not take in the servants, maesters, septons, stableboys and so on who never failed to address him as “My Lord” because he is Tywin’s son and just takes that for granted? Even if we remove his aunt and uncles, who by all accounts were more than pleasant to him, the point of these two lines to me is to point out how utterly delusional Tyrion is and how much he does not appreciate what he has. Much as he will soon chastise Jon for not giving the other Night’s Watch recruits a fair chance because Jon doesn’t appreciate how hard it is for them having never been trained at arms before, Tyrion is more than guilty of this himself - much like how he fails to wear his dwarfism “like armour.” He focuses only on the negative experiences he’s had from his father and sister - not unjustifiably, they were/are equally unjustifiably horrible to him - without appreciating that he lives a life of comfort and luxury where he gets to read all the books he desires and travel the world because he is a member of the family he otherwise so resents. Otherwise, he’d have to bite his tongue and “know his place” like Penny had to do in a world unfair to her, without the wealth of Casterly Rock to fall back on. Tyrion’s delusions about himself and how hard done by he is, or how Galaxy brained he thinks he is, are key parts of his character which this section shows perfectly.

@@nietzschesmoustache3585 This is true and I’m not saying Tyrion has no right to complain or that he should suck it up because of that, because you’re right - knowing your dad hates you is a feeling nothing and no amount of money can soothe. But that’s not what Tyrion is saying. He isn’t just saying that he’s sad his dad and sister hate him, which is reasonable. He’s saying his childhood was miserable and terrible because of that, with only Jaime as a comfort and… no it wasn’t. He doesn’t just focus on it, he doesn’t even seem to register how good he has it or have any sympathy for anyone else because he’s incapable of seeing past his own problems and realising that in spite of that childhood trauma, he has a lot to be thankful and grateful for that he simply isn’t.

I think it makes complete sense Tyrion is the one who has to tell Joffrey he’s got to offer his condolences to the Starks. Robert doesn’t like talking to Joffrey at the best of times, likely hasn’t even thought of making sure that Joffrey has done so, and when added onto the fact that Robert is more than preoccupied with the return to King’s Landing, consoling Ned himself and getting drunk, I don’t think he would even consider he should order Joffrey to - much less want to interact with him in order to do so. And Cersei? The idea of Cersei telling her precious, perfect angel child that he has to inconvenience himself even for a second to console other people, especially the Starks, is a concept too absurd to take seriously. Even for appearances sake, she would make her condolences on “Joffrey’s behalf.” The only other people left who have some kind of influence over him are the Hound, who doesn’t care, and maybe Jaime - who equally doesn’t care. Everyone else would be too scared of him or unable to motivate him. Tyrion is the only other person who can order Joffrey to do things and make him obey in the Royal camp at present. No one else would be listened to, and his parents don’t care enough to make him do so, so it falls to Tyrion.

And considering Tyrion is supposed to have "Earl of Warwick" parallels alongside his brother in the original outline, it makes sense that he is quite literally trying to "make a king" out of Joffrey. Teaching the kid some basic court manners is the most basic thing you should do when grooming the next monarch for their rule. Nobody wants to have some asshole General Manager who doesn't even know their underlings' names.

the thing is though, Tyrion should NOT have as much sway as he does with ANY of these people. Lowkey, Tyron is practically in charge WHENEVER Tywin is not around in text. This is NOT the only time this happens. Joff is LISTENING and OBEYING Tyrion here-he even shows 'shame' when Tyrion calls him out. It changes somewhat later in text, but when the books open, this family is doing what Tyrion says no matter how much they resent it. They are lowkey following Tyrion's lead. Even Tommen asking/directing his comments at Tyrion regarding Bran. ALL of them are lowkey very in tune with Tyrion.

The terrible long years of his CHILDHOOD. After he 'grows' up, Tyrion does get respect-he might not see it that way tho. When you get to his childhood, we learn that Tyrion is basically kept in the dungeons and sewers of casterly Rock until something changes and they let him out freely. In text though, Tyrion had a TERRIBLE childhood. He doesn't come out of Casterly until he is like 13-14 years old. Later, when Oberyn tells Tyrion about the first time he meets him, Tyrion cries-not because of the story. Because Tyrion knows Oberyn is telling him that he knows how much Tyrion really suffered at Casterly Rock because of his family.

Always loved that exchange between Tyrion and Joffrey. Joffrey is a jerk, but everything Tyrion does escalates the situation. To be contrasted with the approach Sansa learns (Dontos at the nameday tourney) - but the key is to let go of her own ego, which Tyrion reallllly struggles with.

Going back and rereading how people treat Joffrey, can anyone not look at the kid and see all the signs of a future school shooter? The best thing Robert has done for him is ignore him and the worst is beat him within an inch of his life. Cersei coddles him so much, he might as well take a page from Sweetrobin's book and suckle at her twincest teat at the age of 13. Tyrion is arguably the best father figure he has and he beats him all of the time whenever Joffrey acts like the little hedgefund nepo baby he is. The Hound is his personal bodyguard and the guy exists to murder people and be bitter. And the kid himself is torturing animals as a small child. Joffrey might be a headcase, but damn if every single person around him wasn't a complete failure in raising the next leader of Westeros. As funny as it is to watch Jack Gleeson get smacked around for pretending to be an insufferable shit, not recognizing Tyrion as a horrible abusive uncle because he is a funny dude with a sad backstory and good old drunken whoremonger Robert Baratheon as a piss poor father is the first red flag when you try to figure out who is to blame for Joffrey Baratheon's character.

Tyrion might be based a bit on Jeffery Hudson. He was a dwarf who fought in the English civil war and was enslaved for 25 years.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for drawing my attention to him, Hudson seems like a fascinating figure. Regardless, I don’t think so. For one, George doesn’t draw on the War of the Three Kingdoms - or English Civil War - nearly as much, and it would be odd to suddenly throw in such a pivotal character like Tyrion as a reference to an otherwise obscure dwarf from two centuries after the War of the Roses which most of the rest of the story is based on. For another, from my basic research atm, Hudson seems like he was genuinely loyal to Queen Henrietta and only left her service after a duel went wrong, which doesn’t really mesh with Tyrion or how he ended up in exile. The parallels are definitely there but I’m not sure George would have been aware of them or drawing consciously on them.

Was Tyrion terrible to Joffrey because Joff was awful, or was Joff a mess because he was being abused mentally and physically by his uncle? Most of the time psychopaths aren’t born that way, they’re created through abuse and neglect. Most fans really seem to have a lot of bloodlust toward Joffrey. Tyrion smacks him and the response is basically, “Good job! Beat that child! Beat him some more!” I’m going to assume that Cersei and Jamie have given Tyrion some reason to suspect them. It’s been four days and he knows them well. They probably let something slip and he’s looking for more.

Joffrey not giving condolences isn't just a teenager being petulant, it's also about Joffrey not being able to read the room about courtly stuff. You don't expect much from a teenager, but from a prince, who will one day be the suzerain of the Starks, it's a massive faux pas. Tyrion beating him is uncalled, though.

I interpret the bacon coming out so fast as being a result of Vayon Poole making damn well sure that the King's entourage is taken care of. Just like a modern restaurant has cooked food available 24/7 in case someone wants it, the King's entourage will be taken care of immediately. Tyrion has been there for weeks so his tastes are well known, word may travel fast that the Queen's brother is done reading and that food should be available to him ASAP. I bet the cooks were burning the bacon while Tyrion was still talking to Sandor.

Question kinda related to Dany's wedding, in a few chapters... When writing F&B, GRRM deliberately wrote Viserys II as a parallel to Viserys III, right? Both called Vizzy, both go into exile - except V2 brings his dragon egg, and V3 doesn't. Why not??? GRRM probably didn't think of this while writing AGoT, but would if be because of Summerhall? All the Targ eggs were destroyed then, so V3 never got one? Which makes me think of Rhaegar and Lyanna... with all the talk of dragons at Winterfell, and theories about what's in the crypts, maybe there was a dragon egg hidden at Winterfell, and Lyanna found it, and that partially explains Rhaegar's interest in her? The egg would then likely be at the Tower of Joy... so its either a) still there, beneath the cairns Ned made, b) at Starfall, c) Ned threw it overboard on the ship ride north, or d) its back in the crypt, in Lyanna's tomb. Does any of this work, or is it crazy tinfoil insanity?

I think you did Sandor a slight injustice there early on. When Tyrion jokes about some princes being unable to count to 6, Tyrion understands Joffreys reaction as blushing, but I believe Joffrey was getting quite angry and rather than blushing just red from anger. In that situation Sandor was not making fun of Tyrion to be rude to Tyrion, but actually by joking about Tyrion he took Joffreys mind off the insult he just recieved, and while Tyrion is busy getting annoyed with Sandors Joke, Joffrey is laughing, which means Sandor removed the tension and possible reprecussions Tyrion might have faced for ridiculing the Prince. I see this as a rare case of Sandor being situationally aware and disarming a potentially dangerous situation with Humor. The detail that this is not the first Time Sandor had used that line in Tyrion implies to me this is not the first time Clegane had to cool off a heated situation between Joffrey and Tyrion, perhaps unbeknown to Tyrion himself.

This opening-the great stone maze of Winterfell. Theh Tyrion limps heavily-he is HEAVY. Tyrion is a broken stone giant of some kind. Like how Bran IS when he gets broken. It is poetic AND literal. LOOK at Tyrion in your mind's eye. In HIS mind's eye, he isn't running FROM the pack, he is running BEFORE them. They might be chasing him, but he is NOT running from THEM in this imagining. That book cames back i a later book-the seasons changing. Not ALL of the books get burned, Tyrion had permission to take some with him, for reading, during his trip to the wall. Tyrion was in that library-and then the library gets torched. It's not a coincidence. The distraction could have been ANYTHING-the fire served two putposes-get rid of any books/scrolls that might have information SOMEONE doesn't want out 'there AND to distract Winterfell for the Strange Man. And you're right-the Hound and Joff are not being cruel. Joff isnt always an asshole until later. There is a reason for it. The Starks and Lannisters are BOTH assholes to each other. Joff is VERY different in this chapter than the following ones. Joff is for killing a wolf, but NOT the boy. It IS the intention-you are right to notice it. Joff is NOT being a real asshole. Tyrion berates Joff a LOT but Joff DOES listen to Tyrion at this point still and it implies that Tyrion kept Joff in line until they part ways at Winterfell. In Winterfell, Joff does what Tyrion tells him to do and he seems to be shamed by Tyrion-as if Joff admired Tyrion in a sense, respects Tyrions views and opinions. Tyrion goes STRAIGHT to slapping Joff. THIS dynamic is something not a lot of people notice in text. When the story opens to US as readers-it reads that Tyrion is basically in charge of Joff in a weird way. To me it almost reads like a twisted Dunc and Egg...with the clout to the ear being recieved. Ok I might commet again-feel free to ignore them, I totes understand lol

My main question is how do people on Planetos know how long a year is?
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 2 ай бұрын
They measure most time by the rotations of the moon, but when we get into larger measurements of time, it doesn’t make sense that their system is so recognisable to us. Or, to be more specific, that it isn’t divided into clearer lines. The reason why the French Revolutionaries attempts to remake a year into 100 days failed is because seasons don’t adhere to human reason, but the Westerosi don’t have this problem - their seasons don’t adhere to any kind of reason. So there’s no good explanation for why a year isn’t 100 or 1000 days to them. They have no reason not to when their seasons are so unpredictable, you might as well make it a clear cut round number at that point.

@@Madferreiro What does using the position of the sun mean? @umwha
@umwha 2 ай бұрын
@@Longshanks1690 Yes I have also come to the conclusion that the only possible way they know what a year is independantly of season is by counting 12 (or 13) moon cycles. However, choosing 12/13 rather than any other number would be completley arbitrary in their world. Also, you'd think the moon would be much more important in its symbolsim, and perhaps each moon cycle would have its own name (like wolfs moon, harvest moon, ect) which would be the name of the months.
@Madferreiro
@Madferreiro 2 ай бұрын
@@umwha I dont know what causes the random seasons lengths. But if their sun works like ours(and GRRM never said it doesnt) then measuring the position of the sun in the sky would give the year length. To be honest the idea of random seasons length is crazy. There is no way they managed to survive that long enough to form a civilization. Lets say a winter lasts 100y... does that means its summer on the other side of the planet or the whole planet freezes? Because 100y of winter would lead most species to extinction and 100y of summer would melt mountain snow leading to insane floods. I don't think GrrM thought very much on the consequences of this.

Preston just wanted to say great content as usual. But I just want to mention maybe use more grabbing thumb nails and titles. You always have great content but it’s hard to pick it on the fyp if you’re not looking at the name!

I like to pick apart things that I don’t like and make fun properties I’m into. Its why I like Preston’s watch series. This feels like a more academic and serious version of that

Since he doesn’t hate what he’s reading, no. 😂 Overanalysing and nitpicking details is his thing but it doesn’t mean he hates what he’s reading, quite the opposite given how much he does praise lol.

I love these so much! It got me to start reading them again, I actually got the leather bound collection and it’s so much better than reading from your phone. I just wish it showed you the order of the chapters, like “Ned 9, Sansa 4” kind of thing. Do other editions have that in the text?
