Wow, what a hodgepodge of comics. It really does jump all over the place, but so cool.

34:28 That is not Strange Tales 13, it's Strange Tales 43. Nice Russ Heath cover art.

The Captain Marvel 51 had an awesome cover. Up near the top edge, was that mold or something else? In your experience, what is the best way to treat stains/mold like that (if any)?

It wasn’t mold I don’t think. Best way to treat black mold is usually to throw it out.

@@bronzevillecomics2581 Good to hear on the book! I'd read about freezing non-comic books and didn't know if the same method would apply. Thanks for the advice about disposal.

I see lately on KZbin these old collection of great comics but sadly left in old plastic bags and stored improperly. The original owner was definitely building a collection but never did the follow through of protecting them.

@@josephbarbera9220 he was interested in lower grade books to begin with as a lot of them were purchased with fair or poor stickers as well as remainder and coverless issues.

Thanks for showing those - congratulations on a nice set of books. Your Blondie #43 is actually Feature Book 43 from David McKay, 1945, no indicia printed. The Terry Bears issue is late '50s, not early: from 1958, and you will find it listed under "Terrytoons, The Terry Bears" #4 from Pines. (I think a decal on the bag covered the CCA stamp.) For musty odor, I recommend sealing groups of the raw comics all together in a larger plastic bag -- fill a small plastic open container with baking soda, and rest it on top of the books in there. The baking soda will absorb some of the odorous gasses. Also good for smoke odors. Leave the books in for a good spell, weeks or more.

Hello Jim, as usual I enjoy watching your show. There are quite a few great finds in this collection. my favorite was spotlight one first appearance of the ghost Rider. I have a question. You used a word to describe what a particular book meant to you and put it to the side. The word you used and correct me if I’m wrong with the spelling,curio? Do you mean curious or what’s the definition of this word if you don’t mind me asking? Thanks for the memories until next time.

What rationale do you use when making an offer on a collection like this when condition, era and genre are all over the place?
@michaelsharkey4255
@michaelsharkey4255 Ай бұрын
Typically flippers will try and buy the collection for 40 percent of fair market value. So for example a $100 book they would pay $40. It’s all about how much profit they can get and how quickly they can make the money back plus the profit. This isn’t a set in stone percent but from my experiences that’s usually a good estimate.
@charlesmardanes7028
@charlesmardanes7028 Ай бұрын
That was not the question. The question was how do you put a value on such a large an eclectic collection without spending 25 hours looking at every book. A single era or genre would be easy as you said but this particular collection is all over the place and would hard to value . Also the condition of the books was all over the place, from incomplete and coverless to modern and perfect.

@@charlesmardanes7028 I’m not sure how he does it but I know a lot of dealers will estimate based on each book. It can be time consuming but it’s important to know each value to price accordingly.

Why are a lot of comics missing the center pages?

Good news and bad news: The bad news is that your Pirates Comics (Hillman, 52 pages, 1950) is not an EC comic; EC published *Piracy* as a "New Direction" series. (The vast majority of ECs were 36 pages, I'll add.) The good news is that your Humbug magazine is one of the highly collectible Kurtzman efforts.
