Definitely try out Daughter of Smoke and Bone! Most of those 2012 books got old super fast & I personally didn’t even like most of them when they were first released, but DoSaB still stands out bc it’s not like any other urban fantasy/paranormal romance. There’s themes of war, star crossed lovers, mythology, found family & a strong female friendship that doesn’t fall to the wayside despite the series focusing a lot on the romance. The ship is super angsty but not problematic and the worldbuilding (chimaera and angels, mix of high fantasy & settings like Prague & Morocco) are very well done. The writing is one of the best parts of the story. It’s lyrical but not purple prose in my opinion, and lends itself to building the themes and the world very well. I also personally love all of the characters, especially the protagonist Karou. She has agency but she’s not the “I’m super tough w/no emotions” typa character, nor is she a Mary Sue

Daughter of smoke and bone is still one of any favorite series of all time. The very beginning is a bit YA- trope heavy (mostly in terms of the characters), but it quickly goes off in a whole different direction, and I think that's why I still love it so much. The world and mythology Laini Taylor came up with is one of my favorite fantasy worlds of all time, it is so imaginative and it's everything I could dream of, and the series moves steadily further into this world the more you read it. Also Laini Taylor's writing is just a treat it is so Lyrical and beautiful. So yes, i would recommend checking the series out, just give it a little bit of time in the beginning, they payoff is huge

I'm pretty picky about YA, but I read Cruel Beauty this year (at age 26) and really enjoyed it. Honestly I think the cover and title do it a disservice. It makes it seem like smutty abusive-relationship type romance and I almost didn't read it, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I loved the Greek inspired setting!

I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone last year for the first time and absolutely adored it, I highly recommend it, it really isn't like any other 'paranormal' book in my opinion, and I wouldn't even technically call it paranormal, for me it's a mix of high fantasy and urban fantasy with amazing plot & plottwists, a really sweet romance that's more than it seems (coming from someone who doesn't typically like romance) and athmospheric vibes that I've never seen in any other book, honestly. Also it's set partially in Prague, which, like, yey european cities (not even western eu!! central Eu!!) other than in the uk! And there's some other unique cities and places too. PS love to see your old filming place! I've been here since that time :)) good luck at uni :))

Yes! I, too, love TFIOS. I read it when I was in 7th grade, and I was so amazed by the writing, the characters, and the whole story. Say what you want about John Green, but TFIOS really did instigate the creation of soooo many works that had a dying or diseased main character or love interest.

I only read some of these books but this video made me feel sooo nostalgic. I just had to go and grab my copy of Fangirl to smell it and it does have a very specific smell, it transported me right back to early 2015 when I was reading it. Also, I highly recommend the tv show version of the 100 (up until season 5, the last to can be skipped). I first saw it and then decided to read the books but I could never get into it, I stopped about 20 pages into the second one. The show has a lot of cool characters that are not in the book and I found it much more entertaining.

For some reason I did not read all those series at the time they came out ( mostly because I was a poor, very young teenager and the library did not own them ). I wish I had read Fallen (and other like Hush hush, Wither etc.) at that time because I actually read it recently and I just know that I would have loved them back then.. There were some other great YA series that I did read though! Like.. House of night , Vampire Academy, Matched, Beautiful creatures ( I tried and did not like it..), Mortal Instruments, The Selection.. all of these are such nostalgic YA books to me! Also did any of you read Before I die? (years and years ago, way before the movie!) That was my version of The vault in our stars.
