The backstage areas from the first 5 SmackDown! games were absolutely god tier. The fact you can go anywhere without consequence, and simply have fun doing anything you want, is just beautiful. I truly miss this freedom we had in the classics. Fun was all that mattered back then, and I miss that feeling.😭

it is crazy how we went from so many options of backstage area TWENTY YEARS AGO in ps2 games to the exact same backstage area in the past 2k games

The problem with backstage fights in WWE games now is because the only way to win the match is by KO instead of pinfall! This makes the backstage brawls less fun imo cause the match could end at anytime and you barely get to explore the backstage.

I agree, this limits backstage fights to 1 or 2 spots at most which is why I always avoided backstage brawl after HCTP and after SVR 07. I don’t understand why they removed 2K17 - 2K19 backstage where you can go during a match where you can pin.

@@nativejabroni1555 I don’t know, 08 did add more weapons to backstage even tho it’s the same backstage brawl from 07. 09 was good too imo, SVR 2010 was decent, and 2011 was good cause of the RTWM. It all went down hill in WWE 12 since RTWM gave us so many handicap matches in the backstage that it felt ridiculous!

HCTP and Shut your mouth still do it the best. No limited areas or simplistic animations. Do whatever you can and things will happen, nowadays an F-5 onto a car wouldn’t do anything but break glass but back then we we’re exploding them with Tombstones and Stunners. 2K just doesn’t get it and THQ forgot about it after sometime… until now. AEW games could be on the road to this kind of excitement again

2K17 was the last WWE game I've played so far; and to go from the insanity of commandeering a helicopter to take a 300 foot dive onto your opponent to just a simple hallway with the interview area in the background and the random chance there may be another superstar there was far less exciting. 2K18 might've fixed the size problem, but nothing will ever top the craziness of the old SmackDown! titles!

My one complaint with HCTP backstage is that I wish they didn’t get rid of the exploding boilers in the boiler room. That was literally my favorite backstage area in SYM because of that, and when I notice it was no longer interactive in HCTP I was soo bummed out.

These backstage places is one of the reasons I love challenging for the Hardcore title in both the SYM & HCTP season modes, cause it gives me an excuse to beat up my opponents in these areas for what feels like 10 mins, ends up being half an hour. They were that much fun!

Looking at these old games makes me realize how each wrestler actually felt like who they were, the animations captured their likeness, personality, almost perfectly compared to games now where everyone feels like the same person.

What wrestling games are missing these days are just being flat out insane. Games like HCTP and SVR did a good job capturing the realism of WWE but also adding a flare of crazyness that made it fun enough that even non-wrestling fans liked the games. Would I like them to go back to the PS2 era of backstage areas? Yeah. Even SVR had better backstage brawls than the current 2K games in my opinion. 2K is fine. It's one of the things I don't complain about, especially know that I don't really play backstage brawls much anymore. But they need to bring the wackyness back. Now I want HTCP just to goof off in the backstage area.

I missed having a locker room/office area to brawl in I think the area from WWE 2K18 /WWE2K24 should be meshed together or a new similar redesign in that aspect even the SvR series had locker rooms/office settings

People always bring up the amount of goofiness that was in older games but I just feel like that silly style wouldn't work with the realistic 2K style. With that said that doesn't mean 2K can't try harder to make the backstage environments more fun and entertaining.

I disagree. I think every game has room for some sillyness. Even 2K got silly at times especially 2K19's MyPlayer mode. While it is true that 2K aims to be realistic, I disagree that 2K shouldn't add some goofy stuff. Especially because at the time, SVR was a realistic interpretation of the product and so were the SmackDown games. The fact that 2K is a realistic game would be the reason it would be awesome to be able to power bomb someone from a helicopter. That's what makes SVR and SmackDown memorable, they were realistic for the time, but not so realistic that it didn't try to have fun with it's source material. But that's just my opinion.

It might be nostalgia because there were my first 2 wwe games, but smackdown vs raw had the best backstage area because of the environmental options, closely followed by the bar brawl in svr 06 Edit: I guess it wasn't considering the backstage brawl match type in the Smackdown vs Raw games, since you skipped all those years.

I'm sorry but.. Going backstage is really unnecessary. I grew up with the SVR games '08 up to WWE 2K15 Ps3. If back in 2003 we didn't have that parking lot brawl match between Cena vs Eddie, we probably wouldn't have that match type. I take Parking lot brawls more seriously compared to just back there or a cutscene making it seem an assault.
