I had a small cavity drilled without anesthesia once. The dentist said it woud take 15 minutes instead of the usual 45 minutes. Well, after 5 minutes he got a call which lasted about 30 minutes. So much for my quick intervention... Anyway, I would still have chosen to go without local anesthesia over the full treatment. The pain for a small cavity is really not that bad, nothing more than a bit of pressure on your tooth and some bearable acute pain. A shorter intervention mean less stress and you don't have to deal with a numb mouth which makes you look and sound funny. Thanks for sharing you experience!

I live in Jordan, and the cost here depends on the dentists themselves. One dentist can charge you what equals 500 $ for one tooth, while the dentist I went to and drilled 2 of my teeth, cost around 50 $. Oh, and he also didn't use anesthesia, although I didn't feel it till he was almost done with drilling.
@yami02049 жыл бұрын
The thing that you said that was sort of strange was that you said they don't do "general" anesthetic, but over here in the US they don't do general anesthetic, either. The numbing that is done is considered a topical anesthetic. General anesthesia is when they knock you out for a procedure, such as for an appendectomy or a cholecystectomy, which is uncommon in a dental office setting and usually requires a more robust visit versus the usual dental office visit.

The small bit where it was mentioned that you suddenly forget Japanese when panicked made me giggle at little, not at your fear, but because it reminded me in a way of when I got my wisdom teeth removed. When I woke up, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move my arms or body really (kinda scary), so when my mom and the dental assistant saw me I just automatically started finger spelling what it was I wanted to say as if it was perfectly normal for me to do so (it's not, somehow the entire ASL alphabet I learned years ago in middle school kicked in and my fingers were flying) and no one knew what I was "saying", much to my fustration. It's funny how our brains work under stress.

Texan in Tokyo I have done this too, a lot. When I get nervous or frightened I completely forget how to speak my other Languages. One time in Finland I did that because I thought I got on the wrong train and I started to panic because I had only been in Finland for two days and didn't know how the trains worked. I guess I looked really scared because people began asking me if I needed help. I couldn't remember how to reply and I ended up speaking in Spanish. Thankfully a man spoke Spanish and helped me out, though I still think it is funny that my mind went to Spanish instead of English because I speak both English and Finnish better than Spanish.

oh wow O_O going to the dentist in Germany is normally for free because your health insurance (its required for everybody here) covers all basic treatments like filling holes/cleaning ect ... if you want to have more expensive materials like gold something if you need dentures you have to pay extra for it and that is quite expensive.

I have been wanting (needing) to go to the dentist. Whenever I do go, I was planning on doing something like this. But yeah, going to the doctor is so affordable here in Japan. Had to take my 8 month old to the hospital the other night and it only cost us 200yen. When we went back the next day, it didn't cost us anything.
@Vortex20879 жыл бұрын
Cavaty drilling in Germany is free(just the cheap metal filling, I guess the better ones are like 50$ per tooth) as well as check ups and scraping calculus once a year but for everything else it gets really expensive. I kind of like dentists! I think they sometimes get sad because so much people are afraid of them but if my dentist would put a towel on my face I would freak out as well! Is there something like a full covering health insurance in Japan? Here everyone has health insurance and most of the medical things are free for you, I think you have to pay like 5 bucks per night when you have stay in the hospital or something. But very interesting video :)

I used to work front desk at a dentists office and every month or so someone would come in for an emergency visit because they broke a tooth. I think 3 cavities drilled in the States for $2000 is an exaggeration.. I don't even have great dental insurance and its only about $50-$75 for a tooth at the dentist I go to and zero co-pay , and that is even when they numb it which obviously ads to the price.

Went to get an eye exam once for eye problems and it cost me $20 / ₩20,000, no insurance

I got a not nice dentist when I was young and since that time I just hate them. But the price in japan is really appealing lol. Here in Canada I have a 80 % paid by my insurances and only a cleaning is about 70 $. I like that they don't unnecessarily inject anesthetic on you. In Malaysia it is the complete opposite. Most dentists will engage in a scaremongering exercise, telling you how terrible the pain will be and how they had past patients fainted during the drilling process and whatnot. All to make you part with more money for that injection. And worse, anesthetic sucks. Your mouth will be left numb and feeling-less for a few hours so you won't be able to talk/eat/drink at all..

@tractorsold19 жыл бұрын
You said you understood they wouldn't give you a general anasthesia, but usually they give you novacane, which is a local anasthesia, not a general. Even though most of the tooth cannot feel pain, the drilling site can get hot and that can get to the nerve. Also, you don't want to wait for anasthesia if they happen to hit a nerve when they didn't plan to. You may want to take your husband a few times until you get this bit of Japanese dentist terminology down better. Meanwhile, thanks for the vids.

Your first time and you had two drilled. I say you were a real man. I had my first one a while back and cried like crazy(yet I can already vote). By the way, here in Bulgaria I haven't heard of a dentist that uses anesthetics for such things. Ever.
@VOLHans8 жыл бұрын
No shots? Usually a little novacane will make your mouth totally numb. Upper teeth are easy to numb. For work on lower teeth, tap your lower lip. Your lower lip should be completely numb on the side that will be worked on. If your full lip is numb, then the lower teeth were properly numbed. It wears off in an hour or less, so don't be afraid to ask for more.

The dental student in me has to say just a note on what you said about "bad genetics". Genetics has nothing to do with your susceptibility to dental caries, unless you mean something like amelogenesis imperfecta. Basically: Fermentable carbohydrates + streptococcus mutans + tooth surface + time = acid production = given enough time = oral pH below 5.5 = demineralization of enamel = caries.
@Waldemarvonanhalt9 жыл бұрын
After enamel has been broken down, other types of bacteria will start moving into your dentine and cause you the pain you experience.

The timeslot thing is weird. Never experienced this here in Europe. (I dont count America as a 1st world country. So they are stupid anyway. Wont even mention it) In Europe we go to any doctor, sometimes we have to wait 1 week for an appointment if its a specialist. Then we pay nothing, and get fixed. Maybe if its something bigger it takes longer to be fixed, but most of the time dentist takes like 2, max 3 appointments. Dentist is like first appointment for checkup and cleaning, next appointment for the "bigger work" like drilling and filling. We pay for nothing that is health related. Cavaties, fillings, cleaning 2x a year, and stuff like that is for free, in any insurance plan. You pay around 150euro health insurance if you are low income, if you are a student its basically for free or ~80euro. If you earn more you pay more. For example if you earn ~5000 a month its like 600-1000 for health insurance. So going to the dentist is the best in Europe.
@CarolynnMarkey9 жыл бұрын
why do you think America is stupid? I would never call another country stupid. Everyone is different, and this makes the world a diverse place. Also, not everyone in America agrees. It's different here as well. Like every country, the only people who you see and hear about on TV and are celebrities and politicians--you should not judge an entire country by these few. I know that a lot of people travel to America, and maybe you had a bad experience, I'm sorry. there are rude people here just like everywhere. I had a really bad experience in Mexico, but I would never say they were stupid. It was just one person who was very mean to me, or perhaps I broke some cultural thing I didn't know about and he was right to be so rude to me. I'll never know and I can't let it affect my life or color my opinion of an entire country.

Dentists in Phoenix area, about $150 for a filling, without insurance. Probably 60% of the people have employer paid insurance. I would never have my teeth drilled again, without anesthetic, bargain or not! We can go to Mexico for dental work, for about 50% of the cost in the U.S. with American trained dentists. You can have all your dental work done in 4 hours, even if you need crowns. Japanese dentists don't sound like a bargain if you have all that pain.

I have had to have two quadruple root canals done in the past--and each of those was a five-hour operation. I have no idea how that can be done in 30-minute sessions, especially given that if it is NOT done all-at-once, then the infection is still there and spreading into the still-healthy tissue (and therefore can NOT wait for weeks). Both of these root canals (eleven years apart) came after more than a week of pain so agonizing that I could not work or sleep. Being told that I could not get completely treated for a month or more would have had me trying to extract my own teeth by hand just to end the toothache.

Thank you for making this video and discussing dental care in Japan. I find it hard to credit the American prices that you quoted. Did you need crowns or only fillings? Given that you were able to wait so long before having the work done, it seems more likely that the dentist who quoted you those prices simply overcharged you and exaggerated the amount of work you needed. Even complicated fillings should have cost about one tenth as much money, and one fifth as much sans insurance. CAVEAT: I base these prices on rates in the Dallas Texas area circa 2015. P.S.: anesthetic included no extra charge.

Wow... things in the USA are really expensive... In Portugal, even if you don't have an insurence, 1 cavity will cost you 120€ maximum! Most are between 50-70€ depending on the conditions of your teeth . And there are many ways of having really cheap insurence so it wouldn't even cost 20€ per cavity. To me the Japanese price is normal and acceptable. If I lived in the USA I would prefer to travel and fix my teeth somewhere else than pay 2000$... I mean, if you came to Portugal from the USA and treated your teeth here, it would still be more affordable than treating them in the USA :/

"General" anaesthesia is when they put you into a drug induced coma... Which isn't even in the same neighborhood as normal procedure for dental work. Normally, you'd get "local" anaesthesia, ie Novocaine and nitrous oxide. And the laughing gas isn't that common. Only time you'd have general anaesthesia is for actual oral surgury; and it takes an anasthsiologist to perform. So... Did you get local anaesthesia?

I was like "REALLY?!?! O,O" here when i was a kid i had a very big cavity and they had to do a root canal. We use sedatives here (a lot) but for some reason they didn't work well and i could feel the pain and holy *** it was the worst pain ever! x'D So i was wondering did it hurt ?? was it bearable?? Because i was really shocked to hear they don't use them unless is reaaaaaaaaaally necessary and for me that would like "do it right away!"

General anesthesia would mean u go 2 sleep. LOCAL anesthetic would have the effect of numbing your mouth + teeth. Good vid.

you are so brave! I was in the same situation as you a while back... I paid the $2,000..... dentists are my biggest fear actually. I really don't think I could have dealt with the language barrier on top of the fear! I also heard that although dentists are super cheap in Japan they are also super awful and terrible at fixing teeth. How do you think your fillings look?

Elle r They're a natural color, so I can't really tell they're there. So I think they look nice...?

Natural colour?!?! They must be quality porcelain filled! Sounds awesome! Your landlord must have recommended a good one! Yaya ^_^ !!! Now.. I have a question. For the very cheap price of dentists in Japan in comparison, why do you think a lot of Japanese people have awful looking teeth? They could still be healthy teeth I guess..? I heard somewhere it's cute to have crooked teeth in Japan and maybe its less of a cultural thing to get braces or teeth straightened. Could it be the stupid appointment times getting in peoples way? What do you think? I'm interested to know your opinion... this was another thing that scared me into only trusting dentists in my own country.

Ha! I have good teeth except for 3-4 cavities and I am terrified to go to a dentist in America!

Only $55 for a cavity? For the price of my most expensive dentist bill so far I probably could have traveled to Japan and back only to get my teeth fixed.

Was it confusing or difficult to move to japan? Like do you have to do a lot of paperwork and become a citizen or something? Also, was it easy to get all of your things shipped? Thanks (:

I wish the dentist was that cheap in Canada! I broke a tooth 2 years ago, had to get a filling that cost $200 :(

how do you get a drilled filling with no anesthetic?! i hope they gave you opium like the old days then cause eugh filling and tooth drill noises are creepy enough when you cant feel them!

They ask you if you want to feel as less pain as possible usually. I personnaly changed my dentist and the new office has women and men and I felt better over there XD

Dentists in Australia are pretty expensive, I thank the universe that I'm under my parents private insurance. My dentist has a really good bedside manner, so that makes the experience less shitty. I still hate every second though 😅

do you know how much is for the braces?

I heard that braces is really expensive though, because insurance doesn't cover it, but it that true?

Hi do you know by any chance if they have already started regrowing teeth at their dental office? If you can ask your dentist or find out?! I have a friend who wants to do this if they actually do this in Japan then she'll travel there.

Hi. This is totally unrelated but I need your help. How do you say Push and Pull like the Moon and push and pull of the moon. Please write it in romaji and Japanese characters. It would really help me a lot. Please and Thank-you! !

Dentists I suspect in many countries aren't supposed to give you anesthesia of any kind when you're by yourself, Novocaine included. As for Japan's reason maybe it's because they don't want to use drugs if they don't have to?
