As a person who loves to know about good dentistry, this helps! Definitely make the videos you want becuase you have a great style to your content that is really nice to watch. I really enjoy learning about the other bits of Japan, I have seen a million Pokemon centre videos so anything thats a bit more normal or real is enjoyable.

I agree on the great dentists in Japan. I keep going to my English speaking clinic in Kyoto even though I now live in Osaka because it's AMAZING. And like you said, they're so much cheaper than Australia. My cleaning and check-up last weekend was ¥3200 and would've cost over $100 in Oz.

It cost maybe around S$200 plus in Singapore😪😪

The fee of 5500 yen in the receipt is the total amount you pay after the national health insurance coverage. Under NHI, you pay between 10% to 30% of total fee depending on your income, age and whatsnot. NHI is the national insurance self employed and unemployed people must have. if you don't have any income you have to apply for the exemption at your local city office. If you are going to a clinics, dentist for the first time, you pay the first timer fee... generally around 1400 yen on top of your medical fees. she paid only 400 yen because she has a private insurance and NHI...

The thing that bothers me most about an extraction, is they tell you not to smoke or spit for several days afterward, on pain of getting a "dry socket", which is purported to be massively unpleasant. They tell you this, but they always numb your mouth, for obvious reasons, and so you spend the next several hours drooling horribly, your mouth constantly filling up with saliva lightly tinged with blood, which tastes unpleasant and so you constantly want to spit it out, but you're not allowed to spit, but if you don't either spit or swallow every few seconds, your mouth is going to be completely full of this dreck, and you don't want to swallow it... The difficulty of getting a wisdom tooth (or a molar in general) removed varies tremendously from tooth to tooth. I've had three such extractions. Two of them (the first and the third IIRC) went very smoothly: numb, wiggle, wiggle, twist, twist, pull, twist, twist, pull, done in something like thirty seconds once the actual procedure started (not counting time waiting for the anesthetic to take effect, obviously). The other one, however, was rather more of a hassle: after ten minutes of the dentist putting so much pressure on the tooth that I am pretty sure my jawbone must have been visibly bending, the tooth finally broke... leaving part of the root still stuck in the socket. He did eventually get it out, but the whole process was much more protracted than the other two, in a way that likely would have been somewhat unnerving for anyone who is timid about dental work. Same dentist, and he wasn't doing anything wrong, the tooth was just really stuck in there, probably due to the shape of the root or something. Instead of a normal Tokyo apartment tour, get a cappuseruhoteru bed for an hour or so and do a spoof Tokyo apartment tour, under the pretense that the drawer/shelf is your apartment.

The national insurance is like Medicare in Australia and if you are the person paying the premium the you’d be charged 30% so the 5000 yen something is the 30% of the total cost which is about 16000 yen in this case. Your personal insurance paid that 5000 yen.

I was hoping you would do a video similar to like this one and bang you did it. I am quite interested to know being a foreigner living in Japan, how life is like (or was like when your japanese wasn't as good then) when it comes to your day to day living activities, things like going to the bank opening an account, getting a haircut, being sick going to the doctor, finding a place to stay...etc. I don't think you had too many issues when you were working in Singapore as they speak reasonable English there but it might not be the same in Japan. Please consider the above if you are gonna do a Q/A in future. Thank you.

I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled while I was in China, They barely gave me an local anesthesia so I felt it a lot and the dentist kept stopping. Finally I told him to just yank it out don't stop. Turns out it had a curled root that kept hanging on.

The word you were looking for was “co-pay”. So during the 3rd and 4th day you will experience a lot more pain and it’s normal, but by 6-7th day you should be pain free. Just keep the area clean and don’t disrupt the blood clot and no drinking through straw. Hope ya heal soon and definitely more medical related, it’s cool to learn

I had one of my wisdom teeth removed in 5 seconds. It was already coming out so it was fairly easy to get to it, but I went to the hospital to get this one taken out and you know how you usually have to wait for the anesthetic to start working when you go see a regular dentist? Nope, none of that. The needle went in, I felt it numbing instantly and then the doctor took it out. I wasn't sure whether to be really happy that it was so short, or to feel slightly traumatized. xD

I can't tell you how glad I am that I only have one wisdom tooth!! Maybe I should go to Japan for my next dental appointment. Probably would be cheaper than here in Australia (even with flights and accomodation inculded), quicker and less painful. Ahh...😟

Lucky that you only had to have one removed! I had to get 4 out (2 impacted!) but they gave me IV anesthesia which was just the best. Hopefully you won’t be flushing out gunk from your tooth hole for the next year like I was, heh. Also really digging the new intro.
