‘Going woke, going broke’: Catholic Church losing members and lacking spirituality

People don’t know what the Catholic Church stands for any more as the religion undergoes a “modernisation process” in hopes of making the church more relevant.
Sky News contributor Rocco Loiacono joined Sky News host Cory Bernardi to discuss the church’s decreasing donations and memberships.
“At the moment what we’re seeing is a process of the church going woke, going broke financially but also going broke spiritually,” Mr Loiacono said.
“There’s no spiritual dimension anymore and when that spiritual dimension is lacking, people find no reason to be attracted to the church and its message.”

Priests are usually well trained and give faithful homilies and explanations about the readings and the why we do what we do. That is the attraction for me at least. There is a mental health crisis in the western world that the church ought to be better addressing. Last year I was at a mobile blood donor clinic in a church, and realized this was a place where I felt appreciated. I had just worked a 70 hour week where the boss gripes about small things, I go home to a lonely room with a list of responsibilities and have no time to do things I enjoy. The church is a place of peace and purpose which I sorely needed. The problem most people have with the Church is they expect it to be a supernatural entity that identifies your problems without asking fixes them for you at no cost and says nothing about how you ought to be conducting yourself. Further issues are the persistent heresy that salvation is earned which leads to arrogance, oppression and corruption. There also the problem of false evangelists virtue signaling like a politician collecting votes to get tallies in their scorebooks. Perhaps the greatest challenge is spiritual leaders are seen as role models rather than as messengers and thus we allow human hypocrisy to block our connection with God. Technology and social distancing mandates have physically isolated us, drugs and prostitution are legalized and “destigmatized”. Social media makes endless mockery of traditional roles. Education system pushes young people away from starting families in favor of “self empowerment”. The government over taxes and over regulates which discourages current entrepreneurs and the next generation that throw up their hands and say “why bother?” In this environment of depression, shallowness and cynicism, the church ought to be the shining city on a hill, where people can find purpose, meaning, encouragement, self improvement, respect and satisfaction.

Way back in the 1980's there was a tv programme about birth control in different countries of the world. The only one I remember was Italy, where the main method of birth control was abortion because the men wouldn't use condoms and having an abortion only once or twice a year was seen as only sinning twice, but taking the pill was regarded as sinning every day. It was a bit like an old joke (which may have been based in truth) about a Christian missionary telling a native of a third world country that his having four wives was a sin in the eyes of God. Some time later, the man came back and said he wasn't a sinner any more because he only had one wife now, he'd killed the other three.

The priest is the shepherd if he doesn't lead the flock and inform them of the evil then what good is he. As an American Catholic, organist and music director, I am blessed to now be playing in a Franciscan Shrine. While our Masses are not TLM, these Franciscans have no objections to the TLM and they make every effort to celebrate the NO with reverence and beauty. They offer Mass ad orientem and we kneel for communion. Thier preaching is orthodox and free from any of the trendy theology prevalent in some parishes in the diocese. I for my part have reestablished the singing of the Mass propers in chant and in English, and while I am not a priori against well written and theologically sound pieces of post VII music, I am careful to be as traditional as possible in my hymn selection. In addition, doing the Mass parts in Latin is not an issue. I have seen the Sunday congregation slowly grow. More importantly I am now beginning to see younger families with children attend Mass. We are due for a change in Archbishop, and I live in fear of an appointment who will carry out a Bergolian retribution destroying what is being built. This fear shows how broken the Church is. The old joke, "is the Pope Catholic" in no longer funny and leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth.

@@daviddestefanis2989 I play for a small (8 in total I think) order in Lawerence, Mass USA. If you type in Holy Rosary Shrine, Lawrence Mass you will find their website. They are unlike the Franciscans who man the Saint Anthony Shrine in Boston who are known for being more "woke". However, the Lawrence Franciscans send their candidates for the priesthood to Saint John's Diocesan Seminary in Boston. I have a low opinion of the diocese of Boston. The cardinal is a Franciscan, who keeps his mouth tightly closed on any of the issues riling the church. He has had an on and off friendly relationship with Bergolio. Most recently, the Cardinal attended a conference at BC, the Jesuit's answer to Harvard where with the likes of Cupich in attendance they tried to figure out why many Catholics are so hostile to Francis!!!!!! In my opinion, the diocese of Boston is a theological and liturgical cemetery. We are in museum maintenance mode. I cannot say that blatant, overt heresy is rampant here, but I suspect that is due more to laziness and a desire to keep one's head down than a burning commitment to the historic teachings of the Church. My judgmentalism will get me more time in Purgatory, but what's another 1000 year when I suspect I will be there for many millennia.

I consider myself a failed Catholic. Religiously attended mass every weekend until my divorce at age 35. My children were bought up Catholic and attended a Catholic school. Now on the rare occasions I attend church I find it so cold, they have changed words in prayers for whatever reason, the hymns are dreadful, they don't shake hands anymore (just a nod), because of covid 🙄 (found this out when I put out my hand, not knowing rule change, and a lady snorted at me "we don't shake hands anymore"). Gentleman next to me put out his hand and shook mine 🤗. There was nothing from them during covid years and no defending of the faith anymore. I no longer find comfort in something that is changing to fit a world I don't feel comfortable in. Church used to be my sanctuary.

You're not a failed Catholic. Doubt is commonplace and fear of the future strikes everyone. Divorce is hard, raising children in a faith is hard, dealing with secular culture is hard but if you give up then you have nothing left but the culture you wish to seek refuge from. Find a mass that suits you, there's multitudes of different styles in both the East and Western rites. Start pray and reading the Bible again, watch good Catholic media, dig out your rosary, start volunteering in your parish and teach RCIA or cathechumenical classes for children. Teach the faith that you hope the next Catholics will have, not the faith you're fearing will fall into place. The Church needs people like you to come back and stand with us. Don't abandon us. Come back, we're ready to take you back in!

I agree wholeheartedly with the first two reasons - the continual changes in the prayers (although some, not all, of them have been for the better) and the dreadful music. I was a church musician from my early 20s up until retiring from public music earlier this year, and under many of the music directors I worked with, it was a real struggle trying to bring a sense of the sacred to the material we were given. It was such an epiphany when I found a parish with a music director who taught us how to sing Gregorian chant (including how to read the notation) and gave us ageless music to learn, palpably connecting us with the countless generations that came before us, and sending up to God a joyful unison with all the Christians of the ages, with one voice. It was a true sense of belonging to the multitude of believers throughout the centuries singing "Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus" before the throne of God. But I had hoped that a silver lining of the last three years would be a discontinuance of the hand-shaking. It always came across to me as a distraction away from the purpose of the Mass, which is to worship God, hear and meditate upon His word, and be fully present at the re-presentation of the sacrifice Christ made to save us from our sins. We have the other 167 hours of the week to socialize; I have always felt that God deserves at least one hour a week of His children's undivided attention.

The effect of this on local parishes is that priests are no longer the captains of the ship ensuring people get to their final destination but have become Julie McCoy's (the cruise director on the old TV show "The Love Boat") ensuring that people enjoy the voyage. Priests who go against these policies are taken out of ministry, essentially cancelled. Consequently the parishes (and the running of the masses) have been taken over in each parish by the pushiest people, usually baby boomer old women. It used to be that you could go into any Catholic church in the world and find the same Liturgy, now you can not find any two celebrations of the liturgy that are the same. Each church has essentially made up their own. The sermons have become nothing more than pep talks about how God wants you to be happy. The purpose seems to be to make you feel good about yourself.

The rights and privileges that Westerners are able to live in, have their roots in Christianity. That didn't just happen. Secular forces want us to return to pagan (pre-Christian) Rome. And I have studied Buddhism. I don't really think it matters to much where your values come from. As long as you have some. I will drop the atheism if a reason to do so occurs. I am surprised, not unpleasantly, that the reporting / comments are reasonably accurate. But given the complexities and scope of "the worst pope in history", this summary is incomplete (and not your fault, given the shortness of time). The most important point for this "woke" nonsense, is that no bishop, nor pope, can unilaterally change doctrine. Doctrines are defined by full dogmatic councils, that means the entire world's bishops working things out. As such, I (personally, someone will say "no proof") that the reason this "synod" nonsense is being used, is precisely to bypass all the bishops. Or rather, have a few **selected** bishops, who in turn invite **selected** attendees, and then claim that this is "the voice of the Holy Spirit". In other words, heretics inviting other heretics to rubber stamp anti-tradition "findings". The last time someone asked "the masses" what they want out of religion, the crowd chose Barrabass. If religion were a democratic voting system, there is no need for God to send special prophets, nor for those prophets to have been ill-treated and martyred. Also as your guest said towards the end, there are pockets whereby the parish is overflowing, vocations rising, and it is at the Latin Mass. Not because Latin is some magic language. But rather the Latin Mass is now the badge of traditional orthodox doctrine. And almost by definition, because it takes extra effort to learn an uncommon and unfashionable language, it is almost self-selecting to get priests who go the extra mile, stick to doctrine, and won't take shortcuts.

I returned after a period of several years upon realizing scandal existed in the Church in the time of Christ and his apostles. It's no different today. It's what is referred to the human element and the evil one combined. So how do I cope with this? I focus on Jesus, his teachings and the sacraments to receive God's grace. I remain in the Church because there's no real alternative. Salvation is through the Church, even for sinners including myself.

I’m Catholic, I just went to mass tonight and every pew was full, as it always is on Sundays. Even during the week it’s reasonably full. I don’t see anything “woke” in my particular parish, I have seen borderline woke things in other parishes. I am adamantly against our church going down this path but I really don’t believe it’s happening. Our church is ageless. The core values of our church will always be in place. Those dioceses that go against our teachings may as well just be another Protestant denomination. I also think a lot of what our Pope has said and done is also taken out of context, whether you like him as a Pope or not he hasn’t gone against any of our teachings. Real Christians are no strangers to persecution and we won’t give into nonsense. I’m not particularly concerned with the direction our church and its members are going, but I do worry about external forces trying to influence how we teach our faith.

I also have a slight concern that going forward this could cause a schism within our church. Near me 2 priests came into early morning mass wearing shorts and also took communion on the hand. The other priest who did the mass then left the church in ordinary clothes and not as true priest. I am the only one who kneels and receives on the tongue, All the nuns receive on the hand.....................just doesn't feel right all round. Confession is readliy available before and after the Latin Mass. As confession is a form of exorcism I noticed how I was able to rid a temptation that kept bothering me; thankfully my fear of God groes stronger and also to be in a state of grace to receive Holy Communion on the tongue , a mingling of Jesus' DNA and mine

If you are Catholic and feel tempted to leave the Church because of these things that have been happening I would encourage you to think about the following: no matter how many times you have done bad things or have failed to do good has God abandoned you? When you go to Mass does the priest actually have the power to change the bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ or does he imitate the words and actions of Jesus at the last supper while God Himself creates the miracle? We know that only God can heal and only God can forgive sins, so In the sacrament of confession is it the priest that forgives our sins or is he simply using Jesus’ power of forgiveness that was handed on to Peter, to be handed on to others…? When you are baptized does it just “make you a card carrying member” of the Catholic Church, or does the Holy Spirit change you inwardly forever? If you leave the Catholic Church you aren’t leaving the junk you see in the news…you are abandoning something more important than you or I will ever fully understand.

He handed the keys to Peter who brought the five apostolic churches together and called it catholic with a small ‘c’ meaning universal church. The Catholic Church has lasted almost 2000 yrs because Jesus said the gates of hades cannot destroy it. It has traditions and doctrines used by Jesus and his Apostles. There are hundreds of Marian apparitions, Eucharistic proven miracles, prayers get answered and true followers truly believe Jesus. No other religion is the same.

In my country Catholic Church losing their members to Protestan Churches and Islam in some degree mainly due to marriages. We are Dayak peoples in the West Borneo been educated by Catholic within their system, but now many Muslims start put their children into that system for their own benefit. We should remember that Francisco is a man and that there has been other popes that have behaved worst than him. However, he's not the Catholic Church not even the priests who are also humans. As I listened to one priest friend of mine saying: "You come to church, not for me, not for other catholic fellows or even because you feel good, you come here for Christ". We should discern anything that is said, based on the Word of God first of all, and then in the tradition and the legacy of the fathers of the Church. This Church has gone through many issues in these two millenia and the Holy Spirit will keep holding it. We are the Church as long as we keep Christ commandments in us, that's why as Catholics we need to be very knowledgeable about the Scriptures. I see a lot of despair and anger and the like among all of these types of discussions YET I see very few people celebrating the Good news of the Gospel in spite of these issues within the Church. As a practicing Catholic we have been praying a lot about issues like these. COVID also seemed to be a challenge since they closed the church doors and went online without direct access to sacraments and most importantly the Eucharist. I reflected on John 10 a lot during COVID and think that many parishioners just didn't come back. 😢 "Jesus I trust in you"... Keep praying. Gods in control. 🙏

As a Roman Catholic I continue to attend Holy Mass and partake in the sacraments. Even if a priest with unrepented mortal sin was saying the Mass it would still be totally valid and so would the Eucharist, as Jesus is the High Priest at every Mass. The people who have left the Church simply have not understood and practised the tenets of the Church and probably attended for their own fulfilment, rather than to worship God.

People leave because of bad Priests! The last time I went to Mass, the Priest's Homily was nothing but telling us what "horrible and fifthly Sinners we all are" and how "holy and pure the Saints were, we cannot even imagine their holiness." Then I thought, wait a minute, this sounds familiar? Where have I heard this before? I heard it from my dad every day telling me I was a totally useless idiot that would never amount to anything! It then dawned on me that this was nothing but ABUSE. Yes I was going to this Church to be ABUSED every Sunday and all the Church goers were just sitting there like stunned mullets and accepting this verbal abuse of themselves. And that was my very last day in Church back in 2016!

Abandoning the One True Church appointed by Jesus Christ to worship and glorify our God is not excused because we have a Pope who does wrong. Bergoglio (Pope Francis) is NOT the Faith nor its Body, he is just a member of it - the same goes for the Priests who were involved in scandals (and need it be said that they actually come out on the LOW end of abuse cases by percentage when compared to other religious groups and compared to the household). Christ established the Church - the Catholic Church is the result of direct apostolic succession right back to Peter and the Apostles, those whom Jesus gave the ability to forgive and retain sins, to carry with them the guidance of the Spirit, and to carry out the Eucharist and the 7 Sacraments. "Catholic" means universal; "Catholic" is not a mere proper noun. Do you remember what Jesus told the Apostles and all His disciples to do? Go, and make disciples of all the nations: That is what it means to be catholic, and even the Orthodox creed uses the word catholic (small C). So Jesus established the One True Church and commissioned it to be catholic. Whether or not he decided to call it "Catholic" is a non-issue, especially since the word in such a form didn't exist when He was walking the Earth. Does what I'm saying make sense to you? For example, Many youth leave the evangelical movement as they “mature”; please don’t take that the wrong way. I mean no offence. The extent to which the number of white evangelicals have declined in the United States has been laid bare in a new report by the Public Religion Research Institute’s 2020 Census on American Religion. In short, For the majority, church was a major part of their social life, and they described rigid expectations to defend their theology, politics and spiritual communities to outsiders. As they grow older, they become tired of this culture; too many leave. In the last 14 years, the Evangelicals have had a 9% drop in Evangelical identity. So, youth is not a good indicator; but, I encourage all the youth t come to the church. Absolutely!

Archbishop Fulton Sheen said back in the 1950s & 1960's the new heresy in the Church is modernism. By that stage it had infested Catholic schools and churches - he said if you want your children to remain Catholic don't send them to a Catholic school. Wokeism is the new term for modernism and the Australian Synod was a disgrace and I can confirm it has infested our parishes in Geraldton WA, where we pray regularly for fixing climate change, supporting the Voice (both Marxist causes) but never pray for ending abortion, for the children and people enslaved around the world and other worthy and necessary needs. Sin is never preached about and so confession numbers are minuscule; no priest talks about the sacredness of the Holy Eucharist, the requirement to attend Sunday mass, to practice Christianity in life; effectively sermons are mostly lots of words that say nothing. The current Papacy has been a disaster and I don't know if the Pope is ignorant or if he has been seduced by the dark side with his fanaticism with the climate change hoax and the promotion of homosexual prelates (Trojan Horses). But the Catholic Church is the Church of Jesus, and he said it will survive until the end of time. It might be smaller, highly persecuted, attacked from without and within - but it will survive.
