Semarang's Lumpia is definitely a must-try! It's not the regular spring roll, but a wet one. Good idea not to visit Lawang Sewu in the evening, the paranormal activities spike up and visitors get possessed frequently. For those that have the ability to see supernatural beings, the whole building is full of them and they see Dutch men and women in colonial dresses walking around. They even closed off the basement area in 2015, apparently for "renovation" that has yet to be completed till today. I was fortunate enough to visit it in 2010, and the tour guide managed to take some pictures of green apparitions ( one was a Japanese soldier) in that partially submerged basement.

Tracing the history of of VOC is interesting indeed Nick! Other VOC cities in Java are way better in city management than Jakarta, the locals are also much nicer and cultured too... You can trace the Dutch pastries and traditional snacks from the local wet market in Semarang and central Java too.

"special"Food in Semarang....the only thing that comes on my mind is lumpia. there's a fried version/lumpia goreng and a wet version/lumpia basah (this doesn't means it's soaked in broth. it means it's not fried) aside from Lumpia, the rest is common food you can found in other places

A good first day at Semarang, no? Nice & helpful Gojek driver and good ayam kremes experience. I'm a bit surprised though that the driver (& his wife) didn't offer you to eat soto ayam or nasi ayam which I think the most famous local cuisine from Semarang (other than lumpia and bandeng presto). The city brought some old memories for me where I did work internships around 15 years ago. Very nice people, good local food & quite cheap also. The only negative side for me is the hot & humid weather, I think even hotter than Jakarta 🥵

Nick if someday you decided to go to Maluku, in Ambon I'd recommend you to go to Natsepa beach to try the rujak (fruit salad with peanut sauce which is different than the sauce in satay or batagor) and then historical places would be in Siwalima Museum, Amsterdam Fort (which I think is located inside a Military Barrack) and then from Ambon you can try and visits another city or islands such as Pulau Seram which has Manusela National Park (Inside of it there is one of the 7 summits of Indonesia, Mt. Binaya 3km above the sea levels and also a home to a lot of beautiful endemic birds). And then Banda Island which has Volcano and a place where Bung Hatta got isolated by the Dutch as a POW and the Sea Ecosystem comparable to that of a great barrier reef / raja ampat / or Bunaken. The transport fee is gonna cost you a little bit more money though since its Consist of thousands of islands so you'll most likely gonna need to take the airplane for a quick travel, or you can just take the Ferrys while enjoying the ocean.
